1. France was still bitter from losing the French & Indian War
A. French secretly helped the colonists 1776-1778 B. 1778-France signed the Treaty of Alliance (agreement to send troops/ships and supplies to USA)
European Allies C. 1779-Spain also agreed to help 1. Spanish governor of Louisiana, DeGalvez captured Natchez and established Baton Rouge 2. Mobile and Pensacola were established as cities the Brits could not control 3. British exhausted many men fighting Spanish instead of the colonists 4. Spain had an ulterior motive, land for themselves
