I. WAR WITH SPAIN

2/15/1898- an American naval ship called “The Maine,” was blown up just off the coast of Cuba.

4/25/1898- after American's called for war to avenge the loss of life, the U.S. declared war on Spain. (*Spain was in control of Cuba)

To this day, no one truly knows who blew up the Maine. (250 men were killed)

II. VICTORY IN CUBA

August 1898- with the help of the “Rough Rider's,” (led by Teddy Roosevelt), the U.S. defeated the Spanish in Cuba.

Peace Talks- Spain freed Cuba and the U.S. got: Guam, Puerto Rico (Island Territories) The Philippines for $20 million

III. IMPERIALISM

Definition- the policy of conquering and ruling other lands (ex-Puerto Rico/Philippines)

The U.S. began this process after war w/Spain and it continues today. (“the world must be made safe for democracy...sound familiar??)

Expansionists- those who supported imperialism Anti-Imperialist League- those who were against

it.

IV. ALASKA

1867- Sec. of State- William Seward purchased Alaska from Russia for #7.2 million dollars OR LESS THAN 2 CENTS PER ACRE!! A STEAL!

“Seward's Icebox- many people thought it was foolish to buy land of ice and snow.

V. HAWAII

1893- U.S. settlers won a revolt against the Hawaiian Queen w/ the help of U.S. Marines.

Sanford B. Dole- became the first leader of the island territory. (Dole Fruit)

Hawaii was full of great sugar plantations. 1959- Alaska and Hawaii became the 49th and 50th

states. The takeover is the main reason why “native”

Hawaiians do not like American's.

VI. THE PANAMA CANAL

1903- with increased trade in the Pacific, the U.S. wanted to buy a 10 mi strip of land in Panama for a faster route.

Colombia (ruled Panama) refused to sell, so Panama revolted and won independence (with U.S. Help??)

U.S. purchased the land for $10 million and paid a yearly fee of $250,000.

12/31/1999- the U.S. gave control of the canal to Panama.

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN??

Once the U.S. got involved in international affairs, it was forced in to war's to protect U.S. interests across the globe.

This process began in 1898 and has not stopped to this day!!

So.....now you know the answer to the question, “why does the U.S. always have to be in other people's business??”

II. THE SPARK OF WAR

6/28/1914- a 19 year old Serbian student shot and killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

So What?? The Archduke was the heir to the throne of the

Austria-Hungary Empire. The Austrian Emperor was outraged and quickly

declared war on Serbia.

III. CENTRAL POWERS

C.P.- Austria-Hungary, Germany, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria.

Germany had the most powerful military of the four and was Austria-Hungary's main ally.

IV. ALLIED POWERS

A.P.- Serbia, France, Great Britain, Russia, Japan, Italy, and the U.S. (only 6 months)

V. “UNEASY NEUTRALITY”

The U.S. always tried to stay out of world affairs. Neutrality = not helping either side in a war. Pres. Woodrow Wilson began to sympathize with

the Allied Power's as the war dragged on. The U.S. had economic interests with most Allied

Power's nation's.

VI. THE U.S. JOINS THE WAR

4/6/1917- Congress declared war on Germany Why?? German submarines (U-boats)- sank a British

passenger ship, the Lusitania which killed 100 Americans.

Zimmerman Telegram- the Germans sent a letter to Mexico asking them to join the Central Power's and declare war on the U.S.

VII. NEW WEAPONS EMERGE

WWI- brought about new inventions in warfare. Ex- machine gun, poison gas, tanks, and

airplanes. Trench Warfare- each side dug trenches to protect

themselves from machine gun fire. Trenches were full of diseased rats, mud, dead

bodies, and were constantly under gunfire. Sometimes battles would last for 3-4 months

with neither side moving more than 2 miles!!

VIII. TURNING POINT OF THE WAR

1917-1918- both the Russian and the German citizens had enough fighting and overthrew their governments.

11/11/1918- Germany signed an agreement, ending the war.

XI. N.C. In WWI

3 Military Bases were established during the war for training:

Camp Greene (Charlotte), Camp Polk (Raleigh), and Camp Bragg (Fayetteville).

IX. MAKING PEACE

Jan. 1919- 32 nations met in Paris and created the Treaty of Versailles.

Germany was blamed for the war, forced to give up their colonies, and pay for the cost of war. (this lead to the rise of Adolf Hitler)

League of Nation's- U.S. Pres. W. Wilson came up with this idea to avoid war.

Congress does not approve the treaty and makes a different one w/Germany and its allies years later.

X. COMMUNISM

Russia- after the war and Russian Revolution, a new gov't took control and renamed the country the Soviet Union.

Communism- the idea that everything is shared by the people (no private business).

This idea looks good on paper, but in the S.U. unless you were part of the Communist Party, you had no say in gov't.

I. THE ROARING 20'S

1920-1929- this era is called “roaring” because of the great changes that occurred in American society.

Along with that change came distrust of other nation's following WWI....

II. “THE RED SCARE”

After WWI- the Russian revolution brought communism to the country, renamed the Soviet Union.

Typically referred to as “reds,” American's feared that communists would take over the U.S.

By 1925- this fear died out as American's realized that Communism did not threaten their lives.

III. IMMIGRATION LIMITS

1921- Congress passed a law to limit immigration for the first time in U.S. history.

There were limits on how many could enter each year.

IV. NATIVE AND AFRICAN AMERICANS

1924- Native Americans were finally recognized as citizen's and given the right to vote (the last group)

Discrimination- continued against A.A. after the war...

NAACP- formed to help A.A. fight for civil rights in the U.S. court system.

V. PROHIBITION

1919-1933- Congress passed a law prohibiting the sale of all alcohol in the U.S.

“Bootleggers”- those who sold illegally made a great deal of $ during that time period.

The Mafia- became successful during this period, as they joined in the illegal selling of alcohol.

VI. THE CONSUMER AGE

1920's- throughout this decade, many people began buying goods on credit for the 1st time.

Because of interest, many people were spending more than they earned, causing debt.

Cars were the biggest seller during the 20's. By the 1930's- the good times would end.

VII. FASHION IN 20'S

Women began to wear skirts, cut their hair, and smoke.

Teenagers could now buy cars leading to more freedom from their parents.

Music- Jazz becomes popular in the U.S.
