14.3 How people live with
diabetes
Insulin is a hormone that makes cells
remove glucose (a sugar) from the blood.
People that have diabetes aren’t able to rid
the sugar from their blood. This makes the
bloodstream high in glucose.
Type 1 Type 2
Because body can’t
produce insulin.
Commonly diagnosed
in younger people.
Because cells in the
body won’t respond
to the insulin.
Commonly diagnosed
in older people that
are typically
overweight.
PREVENTING IT AS BEST

14.1 What’s the cause?
A person’s way of life can greatly impact
his or her health. Bad habits contribute to
poor health, and this is something that
many people don’t realize that they can
control.
A person can reduce his or her chance of
getting a disease by controlling certain
factors.
Some controllable risk factors are:
What you eat
How much you exercise
Whether or not you smoke or
drink
Examples of risk factors that you can’t
control are:
Aging, and how it changes your
body.
Gender (different genders can
be prone to different diseases)
The genes that you get from
your parents.
Lifestyle Diseases
14.2 Cardiovascular
Diseases
CVD – A cardiovascular disease has to
do with the heart. It occurs when the
heart or blood vessels are damaged
Lifestyle can have a great affect on
these diseases. One example would be
the consumption of salt, causing people
to be more prone to high blood
pressure.
TYPES OF CVD
Strokes: When a blood vessel bursts
or gets stopped up, a clot cuts off
circulation in the brain, and brain cells
begin to die.
Heart attacks: Suddenly, the
blood flow decreases and can’t get to
the heart, this causes severe injury.
High blood pressure: When
blood puts extra tension on the vessels
that it flows through.
Atherosclerosis: It occurs when
fatty materials gather in the “piping
system” of the blood (arteries).
Treatment and Dectection
It is a good idea to get your blood
pressure checked regularly. This way,
you fix anything you need to fix before
it’s too late. Ultrasounds are also good
tools in detecting CVD.
TREATMENT CAN INCLUDE:
Transplants
Pacemakers
A lifestyle change
TO PREVENT CVD:
Don’t be sedentary, don’t smoke, keep within
the healthy weight range, and be careful with
salt.
14.3 The puzzlement of
CANCER
It is a serious sickness, caused by the
uncontrollable growing of cells.
Causes can include: Exposure to radioactivity,
harmful chemicals in tobacco, and different
types of viruses.
There are numerous kinds of cancer, such as
--- Lung cancer
---Breast cancer
---Colon cancer
---Skin cancer
Potential signs can be
unusual changes in moles on
the skin, sores that don’t
heal, or difficulty
swallowing.
Biopsies, X-rays, and MRI’s
can detect cancer, as well as
self-examinations.
