Rome wanted island of Sicily. Carthage already had colonies there.

Carthage wanted to expand into Spain. Spain had gold, silver, copper, lead, and iron as natural resources. Rome did not want Carthage so close to their empire.

Carthage had a strong navy. Rome did not have a navy, only a strong army.

Rome quickly assembled a naval fleet. Modeled after Carthage, but invented a moveable bridge that they could use to bored another ship and fight hand to hand battle.

Rome finally won Sicily in 241 BC and Carthage had to pay a huge fine to Rome.Punic wars begin

Hannibal had an army of 46,000 men and 37 elephants. Sailed from Carthage to Spain. Army marched through Gaul (present day France).

Carthage crossed Alps to attack.Cold and mountain tribes killed half of the army from Carthage.

202 BC Scipios people defeated Carthage in Battle of Zama.Carthage had to give up their navy and pay a large fine to Rome.Spain is now Roman territory.
