A Brief History Inspiration – Current Trends Pre-Creative Process Idea Generation Open Approach Flow Creative Roadblocks The Design The Future
A Brief History eVolo Design Competition
The 2009 competition had 416 entries from 46 countries Winners and top entries are featured in popular
publications around the world 2010 competition is focused around environmental
design, in both using green technology as well as urban planning and correct spatial analysis (eVolo-arch.com)
Inspiration - Current Trends Burj Dubai
At 2,625 ft (800m) it is the current World’s tallest skyscraper○ In comparison, the Sears
Tower is 1,729 ftScheduled to be
completed January, 2010
Inspiration - Current Trends Taipei 101
Height of 1,667 ft (509m)Design based on nature
and classic Chinese architecture.
Inspiration - Current Trends Chicago Spire
Height of 2,000 ft (610m)Has received mass
criticism as well as praise.Currently the future of the
Spire is in doubt over the market crash. All construction has been halted.
Pre-Creative Process “There are always three good ideas. At
least.” –John Lasseter (2009)If you focus on one idea, you limit your potential
optionsYou must be able to defend all three ideas, so
you cannot come up with 2 additional bad ideas just to make your first idea look good
This situation would be a good time to use a PMI (Plus-Minus-Interesting) style of deciding and defending your ideas (de Bono, 1992)
Idea Generation Symmetry in Architecture
Break it or keep it? The number 5 or 7?

Idea Generation -Numbers The number 5 or 7?
Proportionally to the human body
Classical architectureBefore the decimal
point, pre 15th CenturyClassical geometry was
based on ideal numbers and proportional series that could be fractionally divided (Lynn, 2005)

Open Approach
Fuzzy Front EndThe first stage of project
developmentFew details are known at
this pointWork at this stage must be
done at peak efficiency. (Kortelaien, et al., 2007)
Must avoid confusing signs and conflicting work
Flow (or lack of)
Proposed by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi (1996), Flow is the mental state in which the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity.
The paradox of using the internet for research.Research or mindless wandering?
Interrupting Flow Multitasking
Switchtasking is a more accurate term, meaning you switch between tasks rather than work on multiple tasks at once (Crenshaw, 2009)
The brain can only handle 110 bits of information per second (Csíkszentmihályi, 2004)
“Even worse, certain studies find that multitasking boosts the level of stress-related hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline and wears down our systems through biochemical friction, prematurely aging us.” (Kirn, 2007)
Employee’s Multitasking Doesn’t Include Work (2007) Humorous, but unfortunately true, article posted in The Onion.
○ “prides himself on his ability to efficiently accomplish numerous tasks at once, none of these activities is actual work”
Maintaining Flow
The optimal condition for flow proposed by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi is where the challenge matches your skill level (Collins, Amabile, 2007)
Fostering an Environment to Allow Flow Remove distractions
It takes an average of 15-25 minutes to get into “the zone”, yet it takes almost no time to remove yourself (Spolsky, 2000)
Find your peak time What time works best for you? Where are you at your peak
energy with little to no chance for distraction (Babauta, n.d.) Focus
Practice It shouldn’t feel like work Practice some more (Babauta, n.d.)
Appreciate what you have accomplished (Babauta, n.d.)
Fostering Innovation Take Risks, Make Mistakes
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” –Thomas A. Edison
Escape“The more relaxed and calm we are internally, the more
receptive we are to tap into our flowing creativity” (Su, 2009)○ Most of my personal ideas are developed while running.
That is when I truly feel I escape the Universe.
Stuck?Look at the other side of the problem (Su, 2009)
○ What is the worst possible building design I could come up with?
Creative Road Blocks Creative burnout
“Burnout means you’ve pushed your creative energy beyond the point of recovery” (Berkun, 2009)
Solutions Talk to someone you feel safe with Escape, take time off and get away.
Take people with you, the more the merrier.
Laugh, then laugh some more Scream Get some sleep and get some
exercise (Berkun, 2009)
Creative Burnout Recovery Steps to recover from burnout
Break your project down into smaller bits. Remember, baby-steps. Find inspiration in crap. Look at the worst pieces of work that you
know of. How do you feel? Can you redirect the energy? Find inspiration in the best. Same as above, but with the best
pieces of work. How can you work that into your project? (Berkun, 2009)
Avoiding burnout Change your work environment. Redecorate, change your hours,
change something. Get out of the rut. Work on multiple projects at once. If you feel burnt out on one
project, you can switch to the next. Avoid dwelling on a sticky problem.
Above all, know yourself. Know what works and what doesn’t work. Do not be afraid to face the truth. (Berkun, 2009)
Future Work – Site Design

Future Goals
Design the bridge element between the towers
Design the site Research green building technology Keep motivated
Keep the flow of positive energy goingThis won’t be one of the many half finished
