During this spring of 2012, I have taken
a class called Computer Graphics. We
started off very simple and subtle; even-
tually moving towards a complex project. All of my work was done on the program
Adobe Illustrator CS5, using the Wacom
bamboo tablet. The class began using
vessels as subject matter. With that, we
focused on mimicking the overall shape
of the vessels with just lines. Moving on
from that, bringing in depth by creating
a grayscale in the images. Shortly after,
we incorporated value with color in a new
set of art work. We explored different
areas of the program by experimenting
with different brush strokes, sizes, and
color schemes. Also, creating an imagecomposed by different shapes and paint
strokes. In this section of the magazine, I
arranged the pages from work rst made,
to most recently. I wanted the viewer
to see my progression throughout this
semester.

When creating these works, I used the program Adobe
Illustrator and drew on the computer with a bamboo
tablet. To draw these, I used 5 different liquid vessels
such as wine bottles and tea kettles. Each drawing
consisted of 100 strokes with various widths of the
brush stroke, different colors, and horizontal/vertical line
direction. I want the viewer to focus on the direction of
the line and how it molds the form of the liquid vessel.
Some of the vessels werent as nely crafted with detailand had a simple shape, so I made those one direction-
al lines, either only horizontal or vertical. Other vessels
did have more detail through its shape. I felt it would be
easier to construct that with both horizontal and verti-
cal line direction in the image. I dont want the viewer to
pay attention to the negative space around the vessel. I
wanted to accomplish getting the assignment done, and
get used to drawing on the computer. I wanted to create
the illusion of an object transformed into lines, and to
simplify the all around form of the vessel.
And while I stood there I saw more than I
can tell and I understood more than I saw;for I was seeing in a sacred manner the
shapes of all things in the spirit, and theshape of all shapes as they must live to-
gether like one being.- Black Elk

The vessel, and tea pot objects were the most
dynamic with shape and color than any other
still life. It was the easiest object to capture us-
ing just horizontal, and vertical lines. This was
the beginning of my knowledge of vector art. I
used mostly black to depict the color of the ves-
sels, but eventually moved towards using the
actual colors of the vessel. Those colors being
green, blue and red.

Value Drawing
I used Adobe Illustrator and worked with a bamboo graph-
ics tablet. With these images, I drew two coffee mug, water
bottle, smart phone, and ink container. The line thickness
was 5 points and I used the brush tool. With these images,
I used both horizontal and vertical lines to get a more three
dimension look. A lot of the images were dark so the view-
ers eye is attracted to the highlighters areas. With the cof-
fee mugs, the viewers eye should be drawn into the cup or
the lid of the cup. With the cell phone, I wanted the viewer
to look at the screen rst which is a lighter area and has a
highlight that makes it look shiny and smooth. This assign-
ment was meant to get used to value, and observe light
areas to dark. Therefore, the image isnt at it has a three
dimensional look to the object so it is life-like.
These objects are a part of my everyday
life.

With these pieces I used the program Adobe
Illustrator along with a bamboo graphicstablet. to create each image, one number or
letter was used in various sizes and colors
to match the object. I used the numbers 6
and 3, and the letter A. I used the brush
tool only for these pieces. To make the
pictures, I looked at a pineapple, apple, and
banana. I also made sketches of some plant
life around my house. The brush size was
from 10 points through 1 point.
I chose to do organic material as the subject
of these images because nature is a huge
aspect of my beliefs and lifestyle. Gardening
is something I have always appreciated. I try
to live a healthy lifestyle and eat a lot of fruit
and vegetables. I also believe that humans
have a strong connection to plant life. Being
human, we are made up of organic com-pounds and that alone connects us to plants.
I believe that if you eat healthy and embrace
nature, you could live a happy life if you al-
low it.

The viewers eye should travel to the lightest area at rst
since the shadow was big on each piece of fruit. Then the
eye would travel up and around each piece so see the fruit
as a whole. The darkest areas are the last thing the viewer
should see, they are small areas that are more intense with
the letter or number. These pieces were to observe and
replicate the color variation of the object. Still using skills
from the value drawings but adding color. Also, the smaller
the brush size got, the more in depth and detailed each
object became. With that, making the object more threedimensional or realistic.

Variations
-
8/2/2019 CG S12 HSimone FinalMAG4 Layout
17/42
To make these variations, I used Adobe
Illustrator CS5. From my previous assign-
ment, color value drawings, I used the
drawing of my bamboo plant. The variations
consisted of using different brush strokes, and color styles. I started with the original
image and changed it to a monochromatic
style using the color red. Branching off
from that, my second variation of the image
consisted of the color guide impressionist
style. With that, the colors changed to light
oranges and reds. To further my experi-
ment, I changed the brush strokes to hand
drawn vector, and tulip arch top. I repeated
the two color changes to complete the set
of variations. The reason for focusing on my
bamboo plant is because it is a magnicent
plant. It is the fastest, and tallest growingplant in the world. It is found all over the
world, surviving in all different types of envi-
ronments. Not only does it live in diverse cli-
mates, but has a wide range of uses as well.
It can be used for a meal, furniture, utensils,
even as a diesel substitute! In Japanese cul-
ture, the bamboo plant serves as a spiritual
guide. With its delicate beauty and strength,
it is used in japanese gardens to sooth and
inspire with meditation. Aside from gardens,
they also use it for temples, sacred teas
and rituals. Along with that, the seed of the
bamboo plant connects to the phoenix,
representing compassion, immortality, and
wisdom. They are seen as the most ancient
grass throughout the world. There are many
different types of bamboo, and can be used
as building materials. A very interesting fact
is that culms can produce an electrical cur-
rent when the plant is tense or compressed.
This plant is a miraculous part of nature that
reects, and inspires me. No matter what
type of environment its in, the bamboo plant
sits strong and calm. That is something I
feel I can connect with.
What I dream of is an art of balance, of
purity and serenity devoid of troubling ordepressing subject matter - a soothing,
calming inuence on the mind, rather
like a good armchair which provides
relaxation from physical fatigue.- Henri Matisse

Although I didnt plant my bamboo, having
it has made me appreciate gardening to the
point where my family is starting our own.
Not only is it healthy for surroundings, but
a healthy way of eating as well. Also, to be
self-sufcient is a very good quality to have.
If more people appreciated connecting with
the Earth, they would save money on grocer-
ies and gas for the drive there. It would be
even better than going to the store because
no one would distribute pesticides into thesoil.

Traced
I used Adobe Illustrator to create this trace draw-
ing. The tools I used were the pen tool (to make the
anchor points), the magnify tool (so I could zoom
in and out to trace the shapes), and the convertanchor point tool (so I could move a point incase it
was improperly placed). Also, I used the eye drop-
per tool so I could get the right color of each shape.
Various colors were used, and they were added
using a ll. To make this trace drawing, I used a pic-
ture of the ower bird in paradise. I used this image
of the Bird in Paradise because it is such an exotic
ower. It takes 3 to 5 years to fully bloom and that
seemed to stand out from any other ower I know.
Not to mention the beautiful colors and shape of the
ower. Surrealism is one of my favorate styles of art
and this ower reminds me that life can be a little
surreal.
I wanted the viewers eye to start at the orange pet-
als of the ower, because it is the most vivid part ofthe image. Then the viewers eye would travel down
the ower and around the blue petal. After that, the
eye moves up and around the background to get a
glimpse of the setting. The point of this project was to
really focus on every small detail of the image to rep-
licate it. Though it isnt 100% accurate, it makes the
image clear using shapes instead of pixels. I chose
the image of the bird in paradise because it is a very
exotic and unique ower with a wide range of colors
that stand out. Also, symbolizing the beauty of nature.

A Bird In Paradise: Variations
To make these variations, I worked on
Adobe Illustrator. I used a few different
brush strokes such as hand drawn vector
and tulip arch top brush. I with three of the
images, I used blue for the monochromatic
portion of the assignment. When choosing
a different color palette, I opened the color
guide in the program. I chose analogous for
the color palette, which gave off the colors
of purple, pink, green, orange and black.
The reason for doing the color variation was
so that the image had a personal touch to
it. I was able to experiment with differentbrush stroke styles and make the piece
more interesting. As for the color, I could
see how each color palette would altar the
image or the viewers eye. The variations
werent 100 percent precise so I was able
to change the style. It was also fun to see
how abstract the clear picture could go to.
I tried to keep a balance between both line
stroke and color has a focus of the images.
With the rst variation, the viewers eye still
looks directly to the ower and then around
to the background. It was more accurateand easy for the viewer to see what the
subject matter consisted of. As you move
down the to second variation, it begins to
abstract somewhat. The viewer still has an
idea of what the picture is but hand drawn
vector brush makes the lines more rigid.
That way, the viewer looks in all directions
instead of a uniform placement. Though
there are still bright colors, the black in
the picture sticks out more throughout the
picture, allowing the audience to travel spo-
radically. The third variation was the most
abstract. The sharp edges of the brush
strokes make the viewers eye move in that
particular direction. Once you get down
to second and third variations, the viewer
has no sense of what the image is.The eye
starts to travel in any direction.

Another class I endured during the
Spring of 2012 is Digital Imagery. The
programs we used all throughout the
semester were Adobe Photoshop
CS5 and Corel Painter 12. This class
focused on photographs and altering
images. With Corel Painter 12, we
briey incorporated drawing into the
course. We started the course with
simple assignments, just collaborating
pictures into one. Eventually, mov-
ing towards making our own images
by photographing and depicting our
individual lives. Also in the beginning of
the semester, we had individual photoshoots. With that, the class altered the
images to make them very different
from the original. Again, the work in
this section is arranged in the order in
which I created them.

Take up one idea. Make that one idea
your life; dream of it; think of it; live onthat idea. Let the brain, the body, mus-
cles, nerves, every part of your bodybe full of that idea, and just leave every
other idea alone. This is the way to suc-cess, and this is the way great spiritual
giants are produced.- Swami Vivekananda
This was another spiritual piece that
was done on Adobe Photoshop CS5. I
combined images that were related to
different religions. The stained glass
in the background was in relation to
the Catholic religion. The statue is
related to the Buddhism religion. Lastly,
the four chakra points are in relation
to Hinduism. I chose those specicchakra points because they are the
most meaningful to me. Starting from
the bottom: the heart, throat, third eye,
and higher consciousness chakras.
Within yoga, those are the four chakras
that move you to enlightenment. What
I was trying to do here was to combine
three religions I connect with and bring
them together.
In the world, you see different religions
ghting all the time or starting wars.
There are many stories within these
religions that I really appreciate, but I
have come to my own philosophy. In
the end, they all believe in the same
thing no matter how the stories go,
they all believe in a higher power or
consciousness. With that core belief,
it seems as though this is a universal
connection between space, spirit andlight. It is just a matter of how you
connect with that higher being. Some
people pray, meditate or use their
bodies as an entrance to the higher
level. The image on top of all the other
images was abstract. I duplicated it
and changed it so it went the opposite
way of the original. It reminded me of a
melting candle, combing these religions
together into one source of light.

Above and Beyond
Collage #2
-
8/2/2019 CG S12 HSimone FinalMAG4 Layout
29/42
This piece is another collage done
on Adobe Photoshop CS5. Since
there were two images I had to
make for the collage project, I
wanted to make Higher Conscious-
ness more of a right-brain perspec-
tive and Above and Beyond more
of a left-brain perspective. Adding
to that, I incorporated different
types of sciences into this piece. I
started with an image of light bulbs
as the background. Although it isntperfectly aligned, I really liked how
the light bulbs were sporadically
making a pattern. Then I embed-
ded what looked like a thick brush
stroke into the center. Next, I found
an image of an eye exam chart and
placed them vigorously around the
center of the image. In the center
of the image, I put a number eight
ball from the game pool. I didnt like
how the ball was at, so I feathered
around it and changed the blending
mode to overlay. After doing that, the eight ball blended really well
with the black of the brush stroke.
The image looked like it needed just
a little bit more to it, so I took an im-
age of a CD. I changed the blending
mode to overlay as well with that
and placed it behind the eight ball to
create depth.
To top it off, I found an image of a
nebula and placed it over the cen-
ter of the image. I turned down the
opacity to it was the furthest thing you
could see within the multi-dimension-
al piece. I am really interested in the
art of science and I wanted to incor-
porate that into this piece. More likely,
the way we see things is what I am
trying to convey. The light bulbs are
objects that are visible to the naked
eye. Along with that, they are repre-senting light. The numbers and letters
of the eye chart symbolize what it is
that the human eye can see. We see
in such a small scale compared to
the overall light spectrum. Branching
from that, there are so much more
wonderful things in life that is unseen.
The black brush stroke is a channel,
switching from what we see to what
we know. The CD symbolizes the
wonders of the technological world.
Data is embedded into the CD, but
we cant see that data. The eight ballrepresents physics and geometry.
Because its geometrical shape is a
circle (along with the CD), it automati-
cally connected to space. Finally, the
nebula represents space and time.
Time goes on while the universe con-
tinues to expand.
To raise new questions, new possibilities,
to regard old problems from a new angle,
requires creative imagination and marks
real advance in science.

31/42
This was a series of images done
in Adobe Photoshop CS5. Myteacher took photographs of each
individual in class. The assignment
was to paint over one image and
use lter effects for the other. With
each image, I made a copy layer
so I could see the progression of
where the image started, to what it
ended looking like. With the painted
image, I made a blank layer over
the photograph so I could make
the paint sync with what was real. I
changed my hair from brown to red,
and made my blonde streaks greeninstead. I turned up the contrast on
the image so I had a china doll look
and painted magenta circles on my
cheeks. For the background, I found
a picture of a leaf and turned up the
saturation and vibrance so it clashed
with the colors of my face well. To
top off the picture, I used an image
of a lotus ower and put it behind
my head so it looked like I was a
part of the ower. I also turned up
the vibrance and saturation so the
pink in my face could stand out fromthe pink in the ower. I ended it with
adding a drop shadow to myself so I
could create depth.
This piece was a creative way to
reect my spirituality through yoga. I
have been doing yoga for three years
and recently have attended classes at
the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago.
There, the class practices hatha yoga
and meditation. The leaf in the back-
ground symbolizes the connection
between being and nature. Intertwin-
ing our roots with the roots of the
Earth is a focus that helps balance
the mind and body. The lotus ower
is also a symbol for nature, but also
the growth of my spirituality. The lotus
ower starts at the bottom of a pond
and gradually grows to the surface of
the water. Once it reaches the top, the
ower blooms beautifully. With that,
my spirit has bloomed with knowledge
and energy. I am in the front of the
image, illuminating the light within me.
I created a shadow dropping behind
me to symbolize stepping out of all
negative thoughts so I could reachenlightenment.
Yoga and meditation are a big
part of my life. It has brought me
closer to the natural world and
I try to incorporate organic life
into my work.

With the lter photographs, I used solarize as the lter. I loved
how the image was altered with many different colors. I found a
photograph that reminded me of water and glow sticks. I changedthe hue of the image and turned up the saturation, then used it as
the background. There were photographs taken of my hands and
I thought that would be really interesting to incorporate into my im-
age. I made a set of two with each of my hands and warped them
so they were popping out of a vortex. I liked how the hands looked
by themselves but I had to use a photograph of myself. To nalize
the project I cropped myself into the image and solarized myself as
well. I turned up the saturation and vibrance so there was a great
color ow throughout the picture.

These two images tell the story of seeing things in a
new perspective. It still goes along with the yoga theme.
With that, yoga teaches you to relieve yourself from all
arrogance, doubt, and replace it bliss. In New Perspective, I
made myself illuminate again for the essence of enlighten-
ment. I am also making an odd hand gesture that symbol-
izes the new perspective, seeing things in a different way.
I liked the image as it was, but I made a second picture that
the viewer could see what is happening in the background.
Warp is a depiction of moving at the speed of light through
a vortex. The hands were distorted and reaching out from
the vortex as if they are being stretched. With the concept
of a new perspective, it also is a new world of thoughts.

I used a digital camera to photograph
this image. I photographed my front
door lock that reected one of the biggerpieces I made. The picture started out
at, so I opened it into Adobe Photo-
shop CS5 as camera raw. I turned up
the vibrance so the orange tone would
stick out. I turned down the brightness
and increased the contrast so the blacks
would be more exaggerated. First off,
the painting being reected is called
Sunrise. It is an abstract painting and
the medium used was acrylic paint. The
concept behind that piece is to honor
the sun and the light within. With that, it
worked out really well to be reecting offof the lock in the photograph. The over-
all concept was to unlock the light within
you. During meditation in yoga, we light
candles and focus on the warm orange
glow given off from the ame. I wanted
to capture that humble moment in this
image. I wanted the viewers eye to start
at the center of the lock. Then, traveling
diagonally with the lock. With that, the
viewers eye is moved to the reected
painting. In yoga, my class practices
removing all darkness from the body andmind. Along with that, we do a series
of movements called sun salutation.
Although there are shadows casted, the
light is illuminating and overcoming the
power of the darkness.
The higher the sun ariseth, the less
shadow doth he cast; even so the greater
is the goodness, the less doth it covet
praise; yet cannot avoid its rewards in
honours.

Dream/Nightmare Photograph
-
8/2/2019 CG S12 HSimone FinalMAG4 Layout
37/42
This was a project where we had to
take photographs out of the categories
kitchen scene, dream/nightmare, and
abstract. For this image in particular,
I chose to do dream and nightmare. In
this dream, I was at a farm that seemed
to be in the middle of nowhere but lush
was everywhere. There was a lake to the
right and it was a beautiful day. When
I looked at the lake, I saw a person...
but not just any person. This person was
an oversized apple with arms and legs
but no head. He was picking apples off
of an apple tree like any normal day. I
like to try and interpret my dreams and
majority of the time it makes sense.
However, to this day I still dont know
what to think about this dream. It is
something that crosses my mind all the
time, and it is a constant reminder that
everything doesnt always have to make
sense. Some things are just the way they
appear.
To make this piece come alive, I was
sitting at my cousins house early in the
morning waiting to get a ride to school.Every morning I notice that the glass on
the front door reects this rainbow pattern
all over the ceiling and walls. The most
vivd part of the pattern was by a fake tree,
and I thought that would t perfectly with
the occurrence in the dream. I used Adobe
Photoshop CS5 to bring this imagery to
life. I used one image as the background,
but there wasnt enough of the pattern
shown. I then took a second image and
duplicated it so the image could have
symmetry and look more like a forest. I
turned the opacity down so I could create
more depth within the image. Then, I made
a new layer ontop of the colors that was
just a solid color or turquoise. I turned
the blending mode into soft light so the
color wasnt too overpowering, but gave a
sense of calming water. After that, I erased
the blue from the rainbow pattern and
turned the saturation up all the way. Also,
I changed the hue so each circular part of
pattern would look like apples falling off
the tree. Instead of putting an apple person
into the image, I made the tree into theperson. The pattern crossed over the tree
and it looked like eyes, so I did the same
thing for that as I did for the pattern.

duces the highest form of living.

In its entirety, probably, it follows us atevery instant; all that we have felt, thought
and willed from our earliest infancy is there, leaning over the present which is about to
join it, pressing against the portals of con-sciousness that would fain leave it outside.
-Henri Bergson
For this image I used Corel Painter
12. The assignment was to make two
images on this program; one would be
drawing from a blank canvas, and the
other is drawing over an image. This
happened to be the image made from a
blank canvas. I already had in mind the
type of picture I wanted to make, which
was an abstract. I started with the
pattern pen tool and used the pattern
tripper. I just made a random stroke to
see how it would turn out. It ended uplooking like a wave of organic material
with blues, browns, oranges, and reds.
To ll the other half of the space, I used
another pattern from the droid pat-
terns window. It was a circular shape
with many different colors within it. The
colors of each pattern didnt collaborate
as well as I wanted it to. To x that, I
changed the blending mode to soft light
with the circular pattern. With that, it
faded in with the colors of the tripper
pattern. I wanted to add ner detail in
the image, so I lightly stroked thin, hori-zontal lines throughout the image.
Then I triggered the kaleidoscope set-
ting and made a small, yellow dot that
ended up making another circular shape.
I switched from the kaleidoscope set-
ting to mirror setting to see how that
would work. I used a slanted paintbrush
and made a rounded, blue oval shape.
I continued that till I felt it looked good.
I was really pleased with the way the
piece turned out but there were still small
adjustments I had to make. I opened the
image into Adobe Photoshop CS5 into
camera raw and turned up the con-
trast. I really wanted the darks to stand
out and the oranges to be more vivid.
I named this piece Portal because the
overall piece reminded me of two dif-
ferent worlds morphing into one. Within
the larger circular shape, it looks like
a sunset. Dragging from center of that
and all the way out the left, it looks like a
machine bird ying out. I accomplished
combining the natural world, with the
technological world.

Kaleid
For this piece of work, I used a new
program called Corel Painter 12
along with a Wacom bamboo tablet.
Usually when I dont know anything
about a program, I let the chaos
take over. I get really excited, and
eager that I press on everything
imaginable. That method makes it
easier for me to learn the program,
and understand which tool does
what. I started out with an image
of a ower I sketched previously
to this assignment. It wasnt close
to being done, and I thought it
would be fun to nish it on thecomputer. To make things easier, I
put a trace setting over the image.
That way, I would mimic what I had
already done. I colored in what was
negative space on the ower, and
worked my way out. When build-
ing up layers in the ower, I used
various brush sizes and strokes.
As an example, the fairy dust brush
created the starry looking strokes
towards the center of the ower.
Another example would be the
pattern pen brush tool; I swirledit around to make the black, and
white spiraled background.
At the height of laughter, the universe is ung into a
kaleidoscope of new pos-sibilities.

Then I used the kaleidoscope
setting, and put dots randomly
around the ower. I tried to main-
tain the circular structure so there
was some sort of foundation for the
image. Eventually, I found a brush
tool that would distorted the dots.
I used the airbrush tool to sporadi-
cally color the whole image with
a red, hazy tone. To make it more
of a mist, rather than a solid color
on top, I turned down the opacity
about half way. Overall, I wanted to
have fun with this program, and get
to know all the settings. In the end, this piece turned out very playful
and vibrant.

My name is Haley Simone and I am cur-
rently a Graphic Design major at Saint
Xavier University. I am in the process of
nishing up my rst year of college and
Im eager to get started with the next.I have accomplished a lot this year in
different areas of art. To illustrate, I have
been featured in three gallery exhibitions
such as Fresh Produce, Everythings
Gone Green, and Major Seminar. With
the Major Seminargallery, my fellow
classmates and I planned out the entire
exhibition. I really enjoyed the experience
and feel that it has benetted me greatly.
During the Fall of 2011, I created my rst
magazine portfolio called Motion Manipu-
lation. I used a variety of media such as
sculpture work, colored pencils, sharpiemarkers, and organic material. Also, it
included screen shots from video art I
began making throughout the semester.
Since the beginning of the semester,
I have learned a variety of computer
programs such as Adobe Illustrator CS5,
Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe InDesign
CS5, Modul8, and Corel Painter 12.
Vector Vision is my second magazine
portfolio this year, which consists of all
computer art. Since I am moving into the
technological world of art, I felt the title
Vector Vision depicted a new perspective
I am now seeing through. I have mostly
created studio art, so working with vec-
tor art is a much more articulate way of
expressing art. To top off the year, I will
also be featured in Saint Xavier Univer-
sitys art and literature magazine Opus.
Aside from the concept of vector art, I
Yoga has helped me see the world in a
more calming, and insightful way. It has
taught me that humanity is connected
with nature, and the universe. Also, to
honor the sun, moon, beauty, and the
Divine. Along with that, science and
philosophy are other subjects that have
inspired me immensely this semester.
