Managing Forests Today, for Tomorrow
What is forest certification?
Forest certifi cation is a process that encourages,
supports, and audits forest management
practices. Forest certification:
Ensures economic, environmental,
and social benefi ts from the forest
in perpetuity
Provides for the long-term social and
economic well-being of forest workers
and local communities
Protects, restores and enhances the
ecological functions of the forest
Specifi es long-term management goals
and provides for ongoing monitoring
and assessment by third-party auditors
How does forest certification work?
Forest certifi cation involves the independent
evaluation of a forest to determine if forest
management practices comply with the
established environmental and socio-economic
standards of the Forest Stewardship Council
(FSC.) In eastern Ontario, practices must meet
the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence standards.
Certifi ed forests are subject to annual audits.
Th e Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF)
has developed a collaborative certifi cation
process for private land and community forests.
Th e EOMF Forest Certifi cation Program al-
lows for numerous landowners and community
forests to share the benefi ts and costs of FSC
certifi cation by certifying their lands as one
unit, with one certifi cate.
Th e FSC is an international, independent, non-
profi t, non-governmental organization formed
to oversee the certifi cation of well-managed
forests. Founded in 1993, the FSC has certifi ed
770 forests in 85 countries to-date.
