Cancon and foreign mix breaking for WEA

Not -with -standing the success of WEA'sCancon acts last year, such as HoneymoonSuite, Idle Eyes and One To One, WEACanada have also been responsible for break-ing new international acts. Among these area -ha, The Dream Academy, Howard Jones, and Simply Red.

Actually, Simply Red aren't "broken"yet, but according to WEA's Kim Cooke,"We're doing 20 percent of the U.S., whereaswe will usually do 10 percent." The album,Picture Book, was released last Novemberand 2 singles have already been culled, butnothing spectacular has happened.

"Obviously this is going to be one ofthose work projects," says Cooke. WEA hasjust released the third single, Holding BackThe Years, which Cooke hopes will be theone to break the band, and if it doesn't -"then I won't mind releasing a fourth," hereveals.

The first single taken from a -ha, TakeOn Me, peaked at No. 2 on the RPM 100singles chart (Oct. 12/85). This positioningwas attributed to the popular accompanyingvideo which prompted album sales of over200,000 units.

Canada was the first country, outsidea-ha's native Norway, to present them with

platinum. That album, Hunting High AndLow, has also spawned another hit single,The Sun Always Shines On TV. The fourthsingle will probably be Train Of Thought, forwhich there is a video already available.

WEA Canada was also first to presentThe Dream Academy with a gold record fortheir self -titled debut album. The first andcurrent single, Life In A Northern Town, hasalso attained gold status, which WEA's DaveTollington credits to "strong radio and videoexposure along with strong retail support."

The only country in the world to awardHoward Jones with a platinum album wasCanada, for his second effort, Dream IntoAction. Following the highly successful firstsingle, Things Can Only Get Better, WEAreleased Life In One Day, and Like To GetTo Know You Well.

WEA have released the new Jones single,No One Is To Blame, a duet with Phil Col-lins. This is a re-recorded version, which isalso available on a new EP coupled with acollection of various mixes of unreleasedtracks. The single is already breaking acrossCanada at major CHR stations.

Jones is currently preparing material forhis next album to be produced by Arif Mar -din.

Bryan and Tina . . . ??There's a vicious rumour circulating aboutBryan Adams and Tina Turner . . . doingwhat a lot of people would like to do. It's justa rumour however. I wish someone wouldcouple me with a beautiful body like that . . .Tina's I mean. What a way to go. What's allthe fuss anyway? One thing for sure, it'sgood for Bryan's next single. As long asthey're spelling his name correctly - that'swhat counts.

The battle of the giants . . . !!While I was waiting for the majors to releaseproduct by supergroups, little did I realizethat a battle would follow a couple ofreleases. Not a real battle in the true sense ofthe word, more of a friendly jousting betweenThe Rolling Stones and Van Halen, or shouldthat be Van Halen and The Rolling Stones.I've heard it from good authority that VanHalen will outsell The Stones . . . and byanother good authority that The Stones willoutsell Van Halen. The race is on and the bat-tle for front -racking is beginning to heat up.Check the sampling this week and you'll seejust about an even split. While some stationsand retailers are favouring Van Halen, othersare showing the Stones as favourites. Let'swatch these 2 acts very closely.

" . . . . the prophets of doom, the messengers ofmediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the newgeneration of competent, creative, confidentartisans and by all those of preceding generationswho have already demonstrated their freshness ofmind, their talent and their capacity for inspiredleadership." - Pierre Juneau

Retailers get up early!!While you often hear the term "Co-op adver-tising" from retailers, you may find out it's amisnomer. Seems there is nothing co-opabout the advertising, in most cases. Retailersget up early every morning (EC: Ahead of therecord companies) and work out deals thatwould curl your hair. Meanwhile, one dailypaper hates the record companies becausethey never advertise. How can they - afterthey look after all the retail advertisers.

Marsden does it again . . . !!David Marsden has scored another coup forthe CASBY Awards. Paul Shafer, the MusicDirector for the David Letterman Show willco -host this year's event with Carole Pope. Now . . . there's a couple of personalities. The show has a few changes this year - one isa new location - the Ontario Place Forum(EC: Is that like the Automotive Building .. .what class?) the other is ticketing. You canget the full -meal awards show deal for $75. oryou can pay just $22.50 for the show alone.

Somebody cares for us LP owners!!Nice to see us record RECORD peoplehaven't been forgotten. While everyone isgetting excited about CDs and cassettes, thereare approximately 6 million people in Canadawho own turntables . . . and it's only naturalthat a few of them would begin to feel theywere being ignored. Some dealers are nowstocking only cassettes and CDs, which iskind of cutting off their noses, wouldn't youagree? Anyway to the rescue comes Attic'sWhite Knight, Lindsay Gillespie, with newsthat Attic's "selected frontline domestic pro-duct will be Direct Metal Mastered." So now,

West End Dance Projectfronted by Garnett FordThe West End Dance Project is "basically acore of musicians" who enlist the help ofothers "to enhance our music," says leadvocalist Garnett Ford. The core of the bandcomprises veterans Jerry Penic, Pat Taylorand Ford, the latter being well-knownthrough his past releases.

They recently released their self -titled EPon their own Swirled Records label, which isbased in Toronto. The EP contains 3 tracks,Goof Hop, I'm Alone and 92 In The Shade. The latter to be released as a single.

Guesting on the session were ClaudeMorrison and Marc Connors of The Nylons, and Lou Pamanti and Jim Cobban, both pro-viding keyboards.

Following a promotion effort atMIDEM this year by Nancy Mayer of LindaDawe Associates, Ford hopes the band willhave secured distribution in France, Ger-many, and England for his next release.

Ford emphasizes that "The project is en-tirely self -financed. We couldn't even get aVideoFact grant." He continues with "Weentertain many weekly offers, not only frommusicians, but also dancers - who would liketo get a shot in our videos." Their last video, which was well received, featured dancersfrom the currently hot Canadian productionof Cats.

I've replaced my old Lenco turntable with astate-of-the-art JVC . . . and I'm waiting forAttic's first DMM album, which will be aCancon release by Haywire. Here's a messageto those new age Yuppies - don't overlook usminorities, or we'll getcha . . . !!

Ronnie Hawkins in training . . .??Well . . . here's good news. Ronnie Hawkinsis in training. He has a trainer, who is helpinghim shed some weight. The 51 yr. old Hawkhas stopped nibbling and whatever else he didthat was detrimental to his health - includingcutting back on his smoking habit. He's nowdown to 12 cigarettes a day. . . and counting.

People love awards . . . !!Just one award show after another comes on-to the TV screens, and people love to watch. These events have become galas and with aroom filled with the best in entertainment,it's easy to get an audience for an awardsshow.

The awards ticket scene!!!It was very difficult to get tickets for theGenie Awards and the last ACTRA Awards. However, I have to comment on how classythe ACTRA Awards looked as a dinner. Itwas nice to see the CBC production team thatdid the ACTRA's, shooting their friends inthe audience, and it was pleasant to see theaudience reacting. Some of the audienceslook like cutouts!

Why so little . . . ??Howcum . . . there has been so little in thedailies about the big payola stink in the U.S.?Can it be because of a good reason?? (EC: Orbetter still, a bad reason!!)

Reach for the dictionary!!Isn't it surprising how many people in therecord business don't know what a sycophantis? (EC: I know! I know!)

A classy country event!!!Not one note will be played or sung at thecoveted Big Country Awards Banquet, whichwill be held on SUNDAY May 4th. at the Innon the Park. This classy get-together will be anice gathering of the Canadian country musicelite. It really got raves last year, and already,it looks like it's going to be a big success thisyear. COVER STORY

Feargal Sharkey - a solo beginninFeargal Sharkey, the voice behind U.K.'sUndertones for 8 years, signed as a solo act toVirgin Records in 1984. He is now on releasewith his debut, self -titled album which wasproduced by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. The set features tracks written by MariaMcKee and Chrissie Hynde.

Relating to the demise of his formerband, Sharkey, who was born in NorthernIreland, says "To coin a classic phrase, 'I hadburned myself out,' and felt I had nothingleft to offer. I was quite disheartened anddisillusioned about the whole business."

Before entering the studio to record hislatest album, which has been a Hot Albumfor the past 4 weeks on RPM's front page,Sharkey points out that he "wasn't preparedto be manipulated." To that end, selection ofa producer was vital. "I had spoken to a lotof 'big name' producers," continuesSharkey, "and they seemed to spend a lot oftime trying to tell me they could make mesound good. Well, I've been recording longenough, and I can make my own recordssound good, and I know a lot of goodengineers that will do it for half the price."

Sharkey had met Stewart back in the late'70s. "Dave (Stewart) was actually the firstguy I respected for his opinions and ideas,"recalls Sharkey. "There was no 'let's make itsound good,' He immediately came out andasked, 'what do we want to achieve - whatstandard do we want to reach, and what do wewant to try and do with it?' which to me wasa far better tact than saying 'we are going tohave these types of songs and we're going touse these musicians."

Having chosen Stewart as his producer,Sharkey set about to record "perfection in 20

Before entering the studio to record his latest album, which has been a Hot Album

for the past 4 weeks on RPM's front page, Sharkey points out that he "wasn't prepared

to be manipulated." To that end, selection of a producer was vital. "I had spoken to a lot

of 'big name' producers," continues Sharkey, "and they seemed to spend a lot of

time trying to tell me they could make me sound good. Well, I've been recording long

enough, and I can make my own records sound good, and I know a lot of good

engineers that will do it for half the price." Sharkey had met Stewart back in the late

'70s. "Dave (Stewart) was actually the first guy I respected for his opinions and ideas,"

recalls Sharkey. "There was no 'let's make it sound good,' He immediately came out and asked, 'what do we want to achieve - what

standard do we want to reach, and what do we want to try and do with it?' which to me was

a far better tact than saying 'we are going to have these types of songs and we're going to

use these musicians." Having chosen Stewart as his producer,

Sharkey set about to record "perfection in 20

    RECORDS TO RADIO

minutes." The actual recording process took 21/2 months and, says Sharkey, "I don't see the point

    - like most American bands - of spending 14 hours a day for 6 months in a

    studio making an album."

When collaborating on the task of com- pleting the writing for the album with

Stewart, Sharkey reveals that "We both ad- mire the style where, on the surface, one can make something sound like a pop record, but

if you listen to the lyrics, they're really bitter. I like the idea of those 2 levels, rather than

being a completely disposable, 6 -weeks -then - nothing song."

Not only is credit bestowed on Stewart for his production and writing abilities, but

also for bringing aboard the talents of Maria McKee (Lone Justice) and Chrissie Hynde

(The Pretenders). Says Sharkey, "I think it's wrong, when making a record, in setting out

too strict guidelines - you have to allow for ingenuity."

Maria McKee wrote A Good Heart. "But we already had 15 tracks for the

album," continues Sharkey, "so we weren't exactly stuck for songs. But one afternoon we

said 'Okay, let's give it a bash,' and it work- ed."

Chrissie Hynde actually came around to The Eurythmics' studios, The Church, where

Sharkey was recording "and said, out of the blue, 'I wrote this a couple of years ago, what

do you think?' So, we went upstairs and did it."

On completing the recording session, Sharkey took his tapes to Shelley Yakus in

Los Angeles. "We used Shelley," Sharkey

Play Ball - Motown swings into spring

by Cam Carpenter Motown label Manager

Ladies and gentlemen here is your Motown starting line-up: On first base Mr. Lionel Richie and his

new mid -line release Lionel Richie - The Composer Series featuring nine of his great-

est hits from the Commodores and

    Endless Love with Diana Ross.

    Playing second is Smokey Robinson

with his new single Sleepless Nights

    from the Smoke Signals album.

On third base is Vanity with Skin On

Skin and the single Under The Influence. No wonder they call

this the hot corner. Behind the plate we have The Supremes

with their new triple album The 25th An- niversary featuring a 12 page booklet and 20

    Cam Carpenter

unreleased tracks as well as all of their number one hits. On the mound are The Temptations with

the domestic release of their Touch Me album, their upcoming 25th Anniversary album and their new single from A Fine Mess

soundtrack album. Out in right field is Michael Jackson Looking Back To Yesterday with 12 never

before released tracks. In centre field is Marvin Gaye with

Motown Remembers Marvin Gaye a collec- tion of tracks recorded between 1964 - 1971.

In left field is PAL with their first single Talk We Don't and their new video. This

could be the left field hit of the early season. Our short stop is Sam Harris and his new

album Sam -I -Am. Don't stop short on this album and try Forever For You.

Out in the bullpen you'll find Lionel Richie and Say You Say Me, El DeBarge

working on his solo swing, Rockwell trying out a new pitch and Rick James throwin'

down some fastballs. MOTOWN - Singles, hits, home runs

    and no strike outs.

explains, "because I think an awful lot of people make the mistake, while recording, to

sit in a control room with $20 million worth of technology, and assume that 'well, you can

pop anything into it, and it'll sound great, it'll sound wonderful.' I don't listen to things like that. I listen to records on the car radio

or on a radio that's been sitting on my kit- chen sink for 5 years - it's a completely dif-

ferent thing. Shelley does have a gift for mak- ing things sound great under those condi-

tions, but then I think that's the way most people hear records. Just listen to A Good Heart on the radio and you can hear

    everything that's going on - it's perfect."

Having obtained that "perfect mix", another strategy employed by the duo was to

buy "10 ghetto blasters between us - con- stantly making cassette copies and playing

them on these machines - trying to find an in- termediate mix" confides Sharkey.

Although admitting to using strategy deliberately, Sharkey maintains, "I still firm-

ly believe that for any record, no matter how much marketing or strategy you use, if people

like the record, they'll go out and buy it. I like that - it's one of the safety holes within the music business

    - the fact that people will

make the decision on their own."

Sharkey concludes with "People can no longer go out and buy 3 or 4 albums a week -

so to buy one is a big decision. You've got to be pretty sure you want that album, but I

think that's good. I do believe it has to be a good record

    - then everything else follows."

Fireworks at CRIA on question ofWould the removal of existing trade barrierswith our U.S. counterparts benefit the Cana-dian music industry?. The many aspects andproblems associated with free trade are cur-rently subject of much debate across Canada.Opposing each other on the issue at a recentCRIA meeting were Brian Robertson andGerry Lacoursiere.

Robertson, the President of the Cana-dian Recording Industry Association(CRIA), contends "The framework that is inplace right now would be effectivelydismantled - given free trade." He says that"it would only be attractive to multi-nationals, with their companies here becom-ing mere branch offices...rather than fully in-tegrated offices that they are now."

He maintains "Free trade will erode ourpresent, self-contained structure," and ad-vocates "the beneficiaries would be themanufacturers yet that's dependant on thestate of our dollar."

A&M Records president Gerry Lacour-siere agrees that the "big benefit" is for themanufacturers. "If you are pressing 100records," he explains, "it would be very hardto be efficient, competing with someone whocan do a million or two." He believes thelarger economies of scale and operating effi-ciencies, offered by free trade, would certain-ly make it viable for Canadian record com-panies to continue operating.

"I don't see us exporting records into theU.S. but there is no reason why A&MRecords U.S. can't have records manufac-tured in Canada," he suggests. "If you lookat the difference in the dollars right now, it ischeaper even with a 5 percent duty."

manufacturing records for the U.S. company and shipping to the Northeast - as opposed to

having them get their records out of Terre Haute, Indiana?' It's a lot easier to ship from

here to either New York or Boston." With regards to the fears that Canadian

record companies would be relegated to "mere branch operations." Lacoursiere asks:

"Aren't they branch operations right now anyway?" Elaborating he states, "In the

short term someone might look at it and say 'we don't need an operation there - we can

handle everything and use it like Philadelphia' but that's very shortsighted.

"In the long range, if the record com- panies are going to compete than they are go-

ing to have to be efficient." He allays those concerns that record companies would lose

their distribution and marketing arms. He suggests that " the record companies still

have to market the territory. Why would you knock that out?"

As with all Canadian record companies, Lacoursiere points out their gold and

platinum lining the office walls. "A very high percentage were gold and platinum in Canada

before the U.S. If all of a sudden they said 'OK, this is like Philadelphia and we'll just have a sales office...' then will they still be

breaking those acts?" Aside from the obvious Supertramp ex-

ample, more recently Falco's Rock Me Amadeus "broke out of Canada," he says.

"The U.S. didn't release it until much later . If we were strictly a branch plant that record

wouldn't have been releasd at all, and now what does a No. 1 single and a Top 10 album

generate for the U.S?" Addressing the oft quoted fear that with

free trade most of the product "would be coming in." Lacoursiere relates "There still

is copyright protection - although it hasn't been tested yet."

Concluding, Lacoursiere asserts the only reason manufacturers can presently compete

"is because of those trade barriers. But why should we pay extra because of someone's in-

efficiency? What the government is talking about is freer trade - to open up some of these

markets. Right now if you look at what Canada is exporting, it's raw goods and not

manufactured goods. If you could change that export to be 90 percent manufactured

goods then we'd all have a lot more work up here."

CBC-TV's Vid Kids finalist at Montreux Fest

Vid Kids Productions, a Toronto -based firm, advises that Vid Kids, a series of 13 half-hour musical video shows for children, has been

nominated as a finalist in the Golden Rose of Montreux competition in Montreux,

Switzerland. The winners will be announced mid -May.

Vid Kids, which is produced for 5 to 11 yr. old TV viewers, is competing in the In-

dependent Producer category, against high - budget, prime -time entertainment for adults. Vid Kids was produced in association

with the CBC, and with the participation of Telefilm Canada.
