How could we improve THIS topic sentence?
– It answers the essay question, but it is not as a good topic sentence.
– “Actually” is not a good way to start an essay– Ambiguity
• (doubts about the teacher?, when doing homework?) • What does this “always” stand for?• Side comments are not a good idea in essays
Actually, I think that a good education is always given at school, with teachers (of course), but in case of doubts…
My suggestion:
In my opinion, children have a better chance to get a good education at school than they have if they are taught at home.
Is this an opinion essay or a for and against?
BASIC RULES OF THUMP IN ESSAYS
• Give opinions.• Agree and disagree in a formal or neutral register.• Choose whether to agree or disagree with the
statement provided in the task, or discuss both sides.• Plan ONE paragraph for each of the THREE argumens
carefully.• Get some practice in writing appropriate opening and
closing paragraphs.• Avoid side comments in essays
How could we improve THIS first sentence?
– What does she mean?– “Wrong” is a strong word
“As I see it, it is wrong to learn at home”
Suggested option:
“As I see it, teaching children at home rather than sending them to school is not a good option.”
Brackets in essays
– In a formal register, any statement within brackets should be grammatically independent of the sentence in which it occurs. That is the sentence should be complete, even if the contents of the brackets were to be removed.
– Keep brackets to a minimum!
Any good first sentences?
• In my opinion, it is better to send children to school than teaching them at home.
• Nowadays, some parents prefer leaching their children at home instead of sending them to school. I do not think this is a good idea.
• Thank you for your attention!
