OBITUARIES

DR PARAKRAMA DISSANAYAKE Dr Parakrama Dissanayake, retired senior physician of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, passed away on the 10th of March 2013 after a prolonged illness which he faced with much fortitude. His cremation took place on the 12th. Born in Nikaweratiya in the Kurunegala district, he had his secondary education at Royal College, Colombo. He entered the Colombo Medical School in 1967. As batch-mates we found his company most entertaining. He graduated MBBS in 1972. Subsequently he obtained his MD and MRCP. He was conferred the Fellowship of Ceylon College of Physicians in 2002.He served as a Consultant Physician in Anuradhapura, Colombo North Teaching Hospital and finally at the NHSL until his retirement in 2009. He took a keen interest in training the younger doctors working with him. The hallmark of his career was his very religious approach to all aspects of life. From an early stage, he associated closely with the Buddhist clergy looking after their health as well as gaining from them an in-depth knowledge of Buddhist teaching. No doubt this gave him the strength and an understanding of the uncertainty of life to face the prolonged illness of 13 years with courage. Despite frequent hospitalizations he kept returning to normal duties giving priority to looking after his patients until about a week before his death. His pleasant demeanor enlivened the day for most of us fortunate enough to associate him. His devoted wife Suneetha was a tower of strength to him. Parakrama was fortunate enough to see all three children graduate as doctors from the Colombo Medical School, the youngest doing so just a few weeks before his demise. May he attain the supreme bliss of nibbana. Dr Sarath Gamini De Silva
