Learning Advisor Tip of the Week!

Learning Advisor Tip of the Week: Try Something New We all have our favorite ways to study, whether it’s flashcards, practicing with friends, or reviewing your notes 20 times. But sometimes these strategies aren’t the best for the material you are studying. If you keep failing your tests, and are still using the same study strategies, it may be time to consider a new technique.

Use these tips to find the best way to study for your next test!

1) Trying to improve your listening skills? Listen to online recordings and practice your active listening. Take notes while you are listening, and summarize what the speaker is saying by either writing a paragraph, or re-telling the news to a friend. Here a few websites to find lectures and new stories:

https://www.ted.com/talks http://learningenglish.voanews.com/

2) Need to work on your writing? Try keeping a writing journal where you record ideas and reflections about your time here at CESL. Though this isn’t formal writing practice, practicing writing daily can help you feel comfortable writing in English. You can also use online resources to check your writing. Here are a few websites to use as a reference:

https://owl.english.purdue.edu/ http://www.cws.illinois.edu/workshop/writers/

3) Want to practice your speaking? Speaking is often one of the most difficult skill to practice, especially if you can’t find someone to practice with! Why not try recording yourself? Then you can listen to yourself later, and notice things like pronunciation problems. You can use this website to record yourself:

https://audioboom.com/

Coming up with new study ideas can be really motivating! If you can’t seem to think of a strategy that works for you, talk to a Learning Advisor, and find out how to get creative with your studying.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Every week we will interview two CESL students. If you are

willing to be interviewed, talk to the Student Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 209).

Name: Yousef Dashti Country: Kuwait Level: 6E

How long have you been here? And how do you like it? 11 months in Tucson and America in general. I like CESL and I spend as much time as I can here in CESL. I would like to extend my time here because I know everyone here and I enjoy my time hanging out with everyone.

What is your favorite holiday?

Eid el Fitr because you can get a lot of money from your relatives, and everybody will be gathered in one house celebrating, eating, and talking together.

What are your hobbies? I have been playing real football (soccer) for 11 years. I always go and play at the Rec Center with my friends.

What is the worst injury you’ve had? I was with my brother and friend leaving the mall called Alrehab. Instead of walking all the way to the stairs, we decided to jump an 8 foot wall. Both my brother and friend jumped, but when I jumped I landed on my toes and broke three of them.

Do you have a favorite saying? “Practice makes perfect” I like to keep practicing in order to become better at the things I enjoy.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? A very famous businessman; hopefully one day I will open my own business.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Name: Nhut Minh Pham Country: Can Tho, Vietnam Level: 6

If you could be any musical instrument, what would you be? Piano, because when I see people playing piano it’s really confusing and the music that comes out of piano is good.

If you could eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be? Vegetables because they are healthy and have enough nutrients for me to survive for a long time.

What made you want to come to Arizona? I heard from my friend that the University of Arizona has a great business major. I would like to join that. I want to go into the seafood business because my father is in that area as well.

How is it different from your country? Tucson is not humid like it is in Vietnam. Also there is a lot of diversity here, but in my hometown there is not that much.

What is the best advice you have ever received? “Stay hungry—stay foolish” by Steve Jobs. I will always go after more than what I have. I am a competitive person who will never give up on my goals.

Ask CESLQuestion:

Why have there been no buses in Tucson?

Answer:

You may have been wondering where all the buses have been to take you from home to class or your favorite places. The Sun Tran bus drivers have been on what’s called a strike.

What is a strike?

A strike is a refusal to work because of undesirable conditions for working. During this time, employees who strike are protected from being fired by their union.

What is a union?

An association of employees formed in a group to protect and maintain their rights and interests.

How long has the strike been going?

The strike has been going on for 42 days.

Why are the bus drivers on strike?

The bus drivers and the city government have had a disconnected relationship and the bus drivers wanted to have a higher wage for the services that they provide. For 6 weeks, during the hours of the day, bus drivers refused to drive.

So what’s next?

The strike has ended now that the city has worked with the bus drivers to provide them a higher wage. The details of their new working agreement are private for now, but GOOD NEWS, the buses are back in action.
