El Certamen de Deletreo en Español celebra

el idioma español y la enseñanza del mismo

en las escuelas públicas del Estado de

Nueva York.

Este evento está organizado por la Oficina de

Educación Bilingüe y de Estudios de Idiomas

Extranjeros del Estado de Nueva York a través

del Centro de Asistencia Técnica en Español

para la Educación Bilingüe, New York University.

Se agradece el esfuerzo y la colaboración de los

maestros y administradores que organizaron

los certámenes escolares locales al igual que a

los padres, maestros y directores de escuelas

quienes prepararon con entusiasmo a los

estudiantes para las competencias locales y

The New York State Spanish Spelling Bee is

an event that celebrates the study of the

Spanish language in our public schools.

This event would not be possible without the

participation and support of the Office of

Bilingual Education and Foreign Language

Studies of the New York State Education

Department through the Spanish Bilingual

Education Technical Assistance Center at

New York University.

We are grateful to the teachers and admin-

istrators who organized the school and

district spelling bees, and the parents,

teachers, administrators, and principals who

carefully and enthusiastically prepared the

participating students for the competitions.

A special thank you to Norma Morato, News

Director, Univison 41 (WXTV), for her

enthusiastic support and promotion of the

event.

We are grateful to the United Federation of

Teachers (UFT) for hosting this event.

We would also like to thank all the volunteers

who freely give their time to assist on the day

of the final competition.

Nacido en Cuba, el Sr. Rafael

Pineda inició su carrera de

periodismo hace más de 30

años y desde entonces es el

principal moderador y pre-

sentador de Noticias

Univision 41. Es allí donde se ha establecido con

reputación de credibilidad e integridad y como

el más prominente presentador de noticias en el

ambiente televisivo. Secundado por un excelente

equipo, Pineda ha liderado y elevado Noticias 41

al primer lugar de la televisión en español en el

área tri-estatal.

En 1988, Rafael Pineda comenzó a servir de

anfitrión en el programa “Punto y Aparte”,

donde fue el primero en hacer entrevistas

televisadas en español a figuras políticas como

el Presidente Clinton y celebridades como el

fallecido Desi Arnaz. En este programa ha

llevado a los televidentes a noticias desde

otros países del Caribe, Centro y Sudamérica,

presentando acontecimientos relevantes y de

importancia a la comunidad hispanohablante.

A través de su carrera, Pineda ha sido

reconocido por muchas organizaciones,

recibiendo menciones honoríficas por su

trabajo. Ha representado a Univision 41 ante

diversas actividades de la comunidad y es el

portavoz de McDonald’s RMHC/HACER

Scholarships* que otorga becas universitarias

a estudiantes hispanos meritorios e incluye

una beca a su nombre.

Pineda ha recibido muchos premios,

incluyendo un Emmy por el Más Destacado

Presentador de Noticias, en la cobertura del

regreso de las tropas americanas procedentes

de la Guerra del Golfo. También fue nominado

por el comité de los premios Emmy en la

categoría de “Outstanding On-Camera

Achievement” y seis veces ganador del Premio

de la Asociación de Cronistas de Espectáculos

de Noticias. En el año 2000, Pineda fue el

El orgullo y alegría de Rafael Pineda son su

esposa, Olga, y sus hijos, Rafael, Howard y
