Ceramics 1 Final Exam

The things I have learned in my Ceramics I Class:

In my ceramics I class I have learned about the great importance of ceramics for humanity.

Baked clay has not only the purpose of decorating our homes but also the functional importance of storage. In the beginning containers made out of baked clay were used to transport water long distances, later it began to be used for storing grains and protecting the grain from rodents, that way people were able to keep food sources year round. As societies became more advanced also their food and water sources became more predictable as people worry less about survival then their leisurely activities expanded. Ancient societies like Rome, Greece and Egypt were able to spend large amounts of time creating beautiful vases and vessels that depict daily activities, rituals and religious subjects. Ceramic containers is one thing that most cultures from every part of the world have in common.

In my Ceramics class I also learned about the magic of the ceramic process. Dirt is combined with water to create clay, recycled clay needs to be wedge to get rid of air pockets and prevent the piece from blowing up in the kiln. More liquid mud is called slip and we can use it to glue and to decorate. When a clay piece is firm but cold to the touch is called Leather hard, once the piece has become really dry we call it Bone Dry and it is ready to be baked, the baking process of clay is called the Bisque fire, the bisque fire is usually done at a lower temperature but some clays are fired at a higher temperature, those are called high fire clays. The last firing of the clay will usually be the glaze fire and that is the stage where we can add under-glazes and glazes to decorate and seal the surface of the clay body.
