Ceramics Sets

• Traditionally ceramics has been a medium used for creating dishware. When you think of porcelain, many people picture their nice china, and tea set. But you know by now that ceramics is a medium that can be used to make many different objects, decorative and functional.

• Still, very often ceramics is used to create projects which have multiple pieces that go together. This is often made possible through the use of molds made from plaster which allow one to repeatedly make objects of the same size.

• NOTE: Some of you may be able to create molds if you are making multiples of the same sculpture.

Sets of objects may come in many forms, not just in dishware. A good way to begin to think of this is to picture such places as IKEA or The Container Store where they sell multiple items in a certain type of style to help you organize your belongings.

Sets can be something used to organize bathroom, art supplies, your desk, jewelry, your books, your games, etc.Sets of objects can also be decorative and simply “go together”.

In the past we have looked at personality, art history, and artistic jobs for inspiration in projects. This time you will be allowed to choose where you draw your inspiration from in the form of artists.

Page 11: Ceramics Final Project: Creating collections for everyday life 3 Piece Artist Sets.

In order to do this you are to decide on an artist for inspiration. This artist may inspire you because of their style, their medium, their time period, whatever draws you to them.

Then you are to research this artist. You may

print out information and images to look at for inspiration. Copy down drawings and ideas that you like into your sketchbook. Using this information, you are to design a 3 piece set that draws inspiration from your chosen.

• 1) Your design must first be approved as always through a drawing. You should have at least 3 diverse drawings showing different ideas.

• 2) Each idea should be comprised of at least 3 objects.

Page 13: Ceramics Final Project: Creating collections for everyday life 3 Piece Artist Sets.

• 3) Each object should relate to each other in some way. In other words, the objects should all be part of a set.

• 4) Your objects needs to relate to your chosen inspiration. That’s it! I’m sure you’ll naturally try to use the elements of art and principles of design. =)

Sidenotes:Your project may be made on the wheel or by hand, or by a combination of both. Your project may use whatever methods you feel comfortable with.

Your project does not have a size requirement, although each object should be bigger than your stamp and if you are making something small, you will probably have to make more of them. =)

Your project may be glazed or painted.

example

Let’s say for instance that Picasso was my favorite artist. Maybe I want to use him for inspiration. So I look through his art works for ideas. Looking at the works of Picasso, I might decide to use his cubist figures for inspiration.

Guernica, Three Musicians, Weeping Woman

So for my ideas I might: 1) draw 3 vases that are cubist figures. These could be made

from slabs or on the wheel and then altered. 2) draw 3 cubist figure sculptures. 3) make designs for abstract instruments, (based on the 2nd

picture)4) design an object for each of the 3 paintings shown.

( Maybe a tissue, an instrument, and a lamp? They could all be usable or decorative).

These ideas could also be altered to fit one’s needs. Perhaps I have a need for containers to hold my art supplies and I could make cubist figure jars. Or perhaps I want to organize my desk supplies with Picasso themed containers. You can go many ways with this.
