When I reflect back on my college career, I immediately think of CeO. No other space on campus felt safer or more accepting than the CeO Office – my home away from home. While it is likely that I always had what it took to successfully complete college, I might not have realized it without the love and support of CeO.

Marianna Rivera: When I was a sophomore in high school, I did a quick Google search for the country’s top programs in speech-language pathology. Madison was #2 on that list so, without knowing anything else about the school, I decided I’d just go there and that was that. Six years after that initial Google search, I’m about to graduate from the best decision I’ve ever taken. The quality of the education I’ve received here has been excellent and so have all the experiences I’ve had. As a first-generation college student born to Mexican immigrants, I’ve acquired the confidence and developed the attitude and drive that I didn’t have four years ago. And for that, I’m eternally grateful to UW-Madison and all the wonderful people I’ve met here.

Ashley Delapaz: I transferred to UW-Madison in 2012 from UW-Waukesha. As the daughter of immigrants and a first-generation college student, I faced the difficulties of not knowing how to navigate a four-year university. I will graduate in May 2015 with majors in International Studies and Russian Language and Literature and a certificate in Russian, Eastern European, and Central Asian Studies. Looking back now, as a senior, CeO’s advising services shaped my Wisconsin Experience. With Claudia’s career advising, I was able to land two internships, one at UW’s International Internship Program and the second at Berlitz in Paris, France, and have had the pleasure of working for CeO as a French and Spanish tutor.

Ncoua Her: Hey Badgers! I will be graduating this semester with a bachelor’s degree in Biology. I hope to become a clinical laboratory scientist after graduation. I wouldn’t be this far in college successfully without the assistance of CeO. The program has given me the preparations I needed to pursue my career goals. The experienced and friendly advisors, ambitious undergraduates, and the opportunities provided in the program have enhanced me tremendously. I’m thankful for the work they have done for me and the CeO undergraduates. It has been a pleasure to be a part of this incredible and caregiving program. They continue to put smiles on our faces every step of the way. I’m proud to be a CeO Scholar and a Badger for life. On Wisconsin!

Ash Fonjungo

What made you want to join the UW Football Team?I’ve loved watching and playing football for as long as I can remember. It has always been a dream of mine to play football for a big school like Wisconsin so when I got the opportunity it was a no brainer.

What position do you play and what is it like playing for the Badgers? I play defensive line. It is really a dream come true to play for the Badgers. It has been a great opportunity to make new friends and gain new experiences. It can get crazy sometimes with all the cameras and people asking for an autograph. It is a big commitment and you have to be dedicated because the schedule is very challenging. But being on the football team has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of people, mainly kids, some of them with serious illnesses. Being able to put a smile on their face makes it all worth it.

What challenges do you face being an athlete and a student (academics, practices, etc)? Being a student-athlete is extremely challenging. Often times I have to wake up at at 5 or even 4 am for workouts. We also have hour-long meetings and not to mention two or three hour practices which are very physical and exhausting because you are competing with the best of the best. Trying to balance all of my athletic commitments with my academic load and classes like Organic Chemistry and Biology, that requires a lot of time and effort, can be overwhelming at times. I’ve learned that it is all about time management and making sure you get the help that you need in order to be successful as a student-athlete and life in general.

What is your best memory so far as a football player? My best memory as a football player would have to be my first game as a Badger. Getting to the stadium and seeing my name on the back of a jersey and Wisconsin on the front was special. Running out of the tunnel in front of thousands of screaming fans was a moment that I will never forget.

What is it like interacting with some of the veteran players who have already played football for two to three years? It is really cool to have the opportunity to be around all these great players almost every day. Getting to know guys like Melvin Gordon and Rob Havenstein, who are both going to the NFL, has made me push myself to be the best player that I can be.

Where do you see yourself in three to four years if you continue to play football? If I continue to play football, hopefully in three or four years I will be able to earn a scholarship so that all of my education expenses will be paid for.
