FROM THE TOP

Rosebank “Your Business Community”

Michelle Maitland, RBA Chairperson

“We are all mad” (MAD) Making a difference.

Once a year I take a couple of weeks off to spend time with my mum in the Gold Coast. I value this treasured time of connecting as mother and daughter newly each year, whilst my own daughter Serena takes the helm in the business. It’s a pleasant surprise that while the captain is away the team shine the light of leadership amongst themselves. In reflection I am feeling rather redundant, however when I look closer I can see that the true purpose of being in business is to grow people and in turn that grows the business. The exiting news I can look anew at what is possibly going to be going forward.

“All Aboard”You will be happy to hear that your CEO and his team have been producing expanded results and gaining momentum on your behalf as the (RBA) Rosebank Business Association sets sail into another year as we lead up to the annual AGM.

Just a small snapshot include. CEO lunches for stakeholders with over 100 in attendance, hosting’s, developing strategic new partnerships and relationships, new memberships, working alongside existing partnerships for even more value, not to mention submissions alongside our local Whau Ward who are committed to working with us alongside Auckland Transport developing what Mike says is “our wish list” for the The West Auckland Corridor.

Julie Stevens, our Business Development Manager, has been full steam ahead growing powerful partnerships that are aligned with growth and development, focusing on interactive sessions that improve performance and results for our businesses. Be quick to register for these as there has been an overwhelming response because of the value and expertise offered during these sessions. They are not a networking event, they are made up of expert content that challenge, engage, and expand results allowing for faster business growth. Attending just one of these is well worth being a member of the RBA for.

“Alone we are smart, together we are brilliant” Steven Anderson

Recently I embarked on an educational journey as I was at a stage of my life where I felt somewhat stationary. It is a course that has people create a community project.

35 x people making a difference in an area of life that motivates or moves them from family projects to far and wide community projects, the idea is to use the project as the wheels to grow and develop people.

The concept team is confronting for many as so many of us try to make a difference alone, however the concept is for expanding results in areas that matter to us.

35 x people with 35 x projects impacting hundreds if not thousands of communities.

My project was to create a fund raising event in the space of Chained dog rehabilitation & rehoming NZ. As my daughter states animals do not have voices. I chose this as it was clear to me, as well as being a great cause, it was an opportunity to have a lifetime experience with both my daughters in an area that they are extremely passionate about. I cannot think of a better way to spend quality time with my family. I would also like to take this time to thank all members and stakeholders that effortlessly and generously have given their time and goods to make a difference xx

Michelle Maitland, RBA Chair, Managing Director, George Walkers Office Furniture Megastore

This month I thought I would hi-light the key moments of the month from a community perspective. The West Auckland business awards video production for the forthcoming awards evening was undertaken by both Julie and myself last week and how pleasing it was to see eight different RBA membership based businesses from 10 different categories being accepted as finalists for the 2017 West Auckland Business Awards Finals.

Those businesses are: MYM Cosmetics, Jump, Living Goodness, World Moving & Storage, The Chrysalis Group, Heart Saver NZ, Green Box Portable Storage, PLN Group, Southern Spars and Jacana Holdings.

We congratulate each entrant and appreciate that these events, even if you don’t win are a very valuable team building exercise. These submissions remain a useful planning tool for the future. When the process is completed you will have a consummate knowledge of the business and its potential.

The recognition of these businesses from our community, within the larger West Auckland business landscape is important for Rosebank. We are a vital component in helping to develop the West Auckland Corridor of Commerce.

That continuing recognition is also linked to the induction, last Friday, of Mark Robinson representing the Robinson Family from Autex Industries to The West Auckland Business Hall of Fame in this their 50th year in business in Rosebank.

It was a memorable occasion with many former inductees among the 180 attendees. Founder of Autex the late David Robinson would have been so proud. While this recognition of Autex is really meaningful to the Robinson Family and their executive team, it also represented the first time that a Rosebank business has received this honour. That is significant to our RBA management team and all of the Rosebank Business Community.

Last week Avondale College first 15 Rugby Sponsor, Westie Food Group, invited the RBA to join them in attending the annual end of year sports prize giving. From this came a solid determination from both the RBA and Westie Foods to provide additional funding and resource from our community to see the college team achieve A grade status next year.

This time of the year the RBA management team are fine tuning the 2017/18 Income and Expenditure budget, thus ensuring the important KPI’s are reviewed, measured and are achievable. For the RBA an important part of that is growing our private income thus lessening the reliance on our stakeholders’ BID income. The balance we have set for the next financial year is about right. That income relies on developing the mature partnership relationships we have with Partners like SPARK Business Hub Waitakere, insurance provider IC FRITH, lawyers SMITH & PARTNERS, BAYLEYS Real Estate, The TRUSTS, SERVICE KING, BNZ banking and more recently BABICH WINES. The team is busy in negotiations with UNITEC and the EMA, the future of the Partnership concept does look bright.

That funding reliance on private income also necessitates building our membership base and this has grown exponentially. Many thanks to the very good work from the membership team. This in itself places more concentration on ensuring our communication to you all via Email Mail-chimp, The Roundabout, EDMs, Social Media Coms and Website are newsy, regular and informative.

This time next month the RBA will have relocated to 18 Jomac Place, where we will occupy a standalone office in conjunction with Regal Beloit. From there we will be preparing for the 2017 Annual General Meeting which will be held at Methven on October 26th, so pencil in that date.

Cheers and best wishes,Mike Gibson, RBA CEO, Mobile 027 294 0551

The Rosebank Peninsula Coastal Restoration Project (Eastside) UpdateIn conjunction with The Whau River Catchment Trust

So what has been happening on the Rosebank Peninsula Coastal Restoration Project in recent months? Several sites have been cleared of weeds and prepared by Te Ngahere Ltd. (a local Rosebank business), ready for planting by business volunteer groups. Once the weeds have been controlled and the ground prepared the sites are mulched to help suppress any future weed growth. Planting of the Honan Place (Area A) will commence on Friday the 22nd September. The next areas scheduled for planting are beside the Harbourview Business Park (Areas R&S). In total some 7,000 native plants will be planted into these locations within the next few weeks. By Gilbert Brakey, WRCT Chair.

Rosebank Business Association partnered with New Zealand Immigration Law (NZIL) and in association with Babich Wines and The Falls Restaurant.

Prior to the lunch about 100 of our members mixed and mingled in beautiful sunshine in The Falls courtyard with many esteemed guests present, such as: Past President Bob Mackie, Hon Alfred Ngaro, Bala Beeram the National Candidate for Kelston, Sir Bob Harvey, Mike Hearn from the American Chamber of Commerce and many of our sponsors / business partners who support us each and every time. Without all of your continued enthusiasm these functions would quickly lose their allure and we would miss our close bond and networking opportunities.

Aaron Martin from NZIL, who partnered with us, gave a riveting talk on what Immigration Law means for the employer

and also in terms of humanitarian costs for families who often fall just outside of our new legislation. For what many thought may be a dry subject, Aaron brought it to life and shared his long experience and how the climate has changed as our perceptions of what causes the stresses and strains on our infra-structure.

Now for the surprise and what a good one it was. Everyone had come to hear Minister of Finance Hon Stephen Joyce talk to us about policy, strategy and so on, when suddenly events within the electoral process took precedence and to his surprise driving through the morning heading from Morrinsville to Henderson was Hon Todd McClay, the Minister of Trade. He briefly spoke from the prepared notes he had been given and mentioned the incredible contribution Auckland makes to the country therefore the large investment here in infra-

structure and in particular interest to us the new tunnel which he chose to use and was amazed how much time it took off the journey. He wryly said he may give a different answer in other parts of the country but no one could deny where the driving force lay in the economy in New Zealand, Auckland of course.

He quoted numerous growth figures and compared them with where we were as a country nine years ago, and where we would be by 2020/21. All were in the positive, but he cautioned the need to simultaneously continue to reduce our country’s debt as well as protect against future shock from world events that we cannot influence, control or often even forecast i.e. Brexit. After all, we are a small not so diverse country within the world scale, and the old adage “the world sneezes and we hemorrhage” still applies. He reiterated that spending needs to be controlled and just because

we are in surplus now, that is not the reasons to let go of the reins - a veiled reference to the opposition’s proposed spending bonanza, should they be the government.

Next notes aside we moved into an obvious area of huge passion, negotiating the very best trade deals for New Zealand on a world stage within often very challenging formal and restrictive environments.

He told us that we had, as a country, set our Agenda until 2030, and now every step we took in our trade negotiations needed to have the question asked “how does that relate back to our Trade Agenda”? There is a natural tendency to think of trade as being broadly commodity based, but now days there is a definite trend to include services and investments. That focus will continue to be extended.

This approach has filtered down to the regions and many of the Regional Action Plans are now challenging themselves to check back against the overall plan and see they are working in alignment with it for each and every trade that is happening.

One particularly interesting point that Todd made was, for every political gain that was made within New Zealand in a domestic sense there was a price to pay within the confines of the Trade Negotiation. We have to recognise, but not necessarily accept, that we are a really small player and what is vital in our deals is that every single agreement is “high quality”. This is because for all of our $70 billion export business dollars we are creating 600,000 jobs for New Zealanders and we cannot afford to lose but one of these jobs. To provide some Rosebank context the 8000 + fte’s working in Rosebank is equivalent to $1 billion export business dollars . To achieve this there must be a common sense set of rules and a level planning field, from

which all participants can put their best foot forward.

An example of this are our beef exports to Japan. We begin at 28.5% duty and then when a certain quantity is reached the duty jumps to 50%. Compare that to 19.5% paid by the Australians and then the opportunity that TPP brings with its proposed 9% duty. “Our policy is simply to expand our access to as many deals and agreements for the benefit of us all. This includes the U.K. and the E.U. which will take effort and skill but as the British negotiator is a New Zealander we already have a connection and New Zealand and Australia have been promised to be the first to negotiate in approximately two years’ time”

We will do everything it takes to have guaranteed access to as many markets as possible and thus secure jobs for our people.

New Zealand’s Trade looked to be in very good hands with an experienced negotiator Hon Todd McClay, who will lobby to in his words achieve” the very best result for all of us.”

The Juice from JulesWe know that the current skill shortage is of concern for many of you, and that this is becoming more of a worry in our current strong economic and employment growth environment. Don’t give your valuable staff a reason to consider another workplace, give them the motivation to partner with your workplace. We are all about learning from other successful businesses and have been talking to some of the local employees about their employers and what makes them great bosses.

Here is what I have learnt from what a local CEO says to motivate his team;

“I don’t want you to just be a hero at work, I want you to be a hero at home as well. Being a hero at work only is half the job.” “I empower you to do what is necessary for your job and if it doesn’t work out tell me what you have learnt in the process for the next time. It is all about giving them the wings to fly”.

Jaci Griffin, Manager of Les Mills New Lyn shares some great initiatives they run encouraging a healthier workforce as all staff spend the majority of their time at work so their health and wellbeing is important for performance. Bon Accord

Providing Premium Products.

Bon Accord Products Ltd is engaged in the manufacturing and wholesaling of a comprehensive range of hot and iced beverages, primarily for the café sector. Paul L’Amie, Managing Director and Mark Bartlett, Director, Shareholder and Export Development Manager, started the business in 2002. They began with their premium hot chocolate range and discovered they had a talent for product development, so they expanded into supplying a full range of beverages to the trade.

They relocated the business to Rosebank 8 years ago, and moved into their purpose-built Dairy Export plant in Jomac Place 2 years ago. Here they blend both their Bon Accord and Zero Degrees ranges. Their Zero Degrees Iced beverages have been designed and formulated as a ‘just add water and ice’ range, which is ideal for emerging markets such as South East Asia.

Paul says, “Our objective is to assist our clients in attracting, delighting, and retaining regular customers through superb quality, innovative, delicious, and simple to use products which deliver exceptional margins. We seek out the world’s finest ingredients to make our products. This has enabled us to establish ourselves as a major player in international markets.”

“We have a strong technical base allowing us to create new products at the leading edge of the latest international café trends. We have a team of 22 staff who are the testers and tasters for our products, before they go to the market.”

All the products carry an unconditional 100% guarantee of quality. The plant is “state of the art” and Bon Accord have made a huge investment in machinery thus creating a

critical hygiene environment. All manufacturing takes place in accordance with a registered MPI Food Safety Programme and HACCP Plan, ensuring the manufacturing processes, product compliance and product safety are of the highest order. These high standards and rigorous processes and systems differentiate them from the competitors.

We asked what their future direction is and I am very excited to say they are working on a hot chocolate that your spoon will stand up in and improving their vanilla soft serve.

Rosebank road is famous for many things, including being an incredible business hub. But now, it’s also going to be famous for being a hub of a different kind - just in time for your end of year function!

One specific Avondale venue is being totally transformed from an empty warehouse space to a fully immersive New York City streetscape, complete with street food vendors, entertainers and bars - plus an underground nightclub, which is where the show really begins.

Introducing “Pleasuredome” - a musical like no other, and your hottest night out since 1984!

Upon arrival at the Pleasuredome venue, you’ll be transported back to 1984 and find yourself in a fully realized Manhattan street.

As you travel through the subway, you’ll feel the hum of the city; the taxis, the people, the music. With a swagger in your stride, you’ll step onto the street and wonder at the buildings, the storefronts, the graffiti. You’ll become intoxicated by the smell of food stalls as the vendors hawk their mouthwatering wares. You’ll see the whoosh of steam rising up out of vents, and observe buskers as they jostle to entertain and impress.

With a hotdog in one hand and a beer from the bar in the other, you’ll venture into Pleasuredome - the underground club where inhibitions come second to fun and doing what’s right is more important than the bottom line.

This legendary underground nightclub is facing demolition, as a business tycoon plots to build the next high-rise, ‘Victory Towers’ directly on Pleasuredome’s turf.

The questions is - will passion, love and freedom prevail over the bottom line?

Lucy Lawless stars as Sappho, the show’s sexy, hedonistic diva who is fighting to keep Pleasuredome alive, and whose lavish performances have made Pleasuredome synonymous with glamour and excess.

The A-list studded cast includes the likes of Moses Mackay (Sol3 Mio), Ashleigh Taylor (Wicked), Vince Harder (The Lion King), Stephen Lovatt (Neighbours) plus a 21-strong cast of local and international performers, all supported by a state of the art light and projection extravaganza.

Against a New York City backdrop, the ‘Pleasuredome’ musical is a story of desire, addiction, greed and the power of love set in an underground club that grinds to the rhythm of the biggest hits of the 80’s.

The music will take you back to a different era, and includes hits from Frankie Goes to Hollywood, The Eurythmics, Bruce Springsteen and more, all repurposed to weave within the story.

Lucy Lawless comments that ‘it’s a playground for adults.. And very mature teenagers!”

It’s not just an A-list cast that will make this show an epic. Directed by Michael Hurst (Chicago) and produced by Rob Tapert (Spartacus), Pleasuredome will be the most electrifying theatre experience ever staged in New Zealand.

This musical presents an incredible opportunity for you to treat your clients and colleagues to a Christmas party or end of year function at a location that’s right on our doorstep. The season is limited, and the purpose built Manhattan street will be torn down before the end of the year, so grab this chance to showcase everything Avondale has to offer and pave the way for similar creative ventures in future.

Do your staff really know what to do in a medical emergency?

Mike ManderHeart Saver

Many business owners and managers trust that their employees would know what to do if they find a colleague or a customer suffering from a medical emergency. Surely someone in your organization would be capable and could take the lead? Hmm, probably not.

Most of us think that putting staff on a first aid course once every two years means we’ve ticked the box for employee welfare. We think that after one day of training they’ll know how to act if they come across someone in medical distress but unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. While we believe that regular first aid training is important, (it’s why we personally run first aid courses all over NZ), we also know that one day of theory and role play isn’t always enough to give someone the confidence and knowledge to react well in an emergency situation. What often happens in an emergency situation is that the adrenaline starts pumping, you freeze, and everything you’ve learnt flies out the window, replaced by panic and inaction.

The people you work with can often feel like family, so to stand by in a critical situation and not knowing how you can help is a terrible feeling.

So how can you find out how your employees will act? Try putting them to the test.

Our scenario-based training was designed to put staff like yours under some pressure and test their reactions. Without their knowledge, we come into to your workplace and mock up a realistic medical emergency to start the adrenaline going and put everyone through their paces.

We might plant someone in the bathroom, slumped over and unresponsive. Or, it might be someone trapped under a pile of stock, or a “customer” silently gasping for help in reception. We’ll create a few scenarios specific to the type of work that you do and put your team to the test. We’ll audit their response, and then offer

on-the-spot feedback about their areas of weakness and how they can improve.

This is something we’ve developed to help employers be “proactive” rather than “reactive” and to give you peace of mind as a director or manager, that you’ve done all you can to create a safe workplace.

Other things to consider for a safe workplace: Do you have enough employees trained in first aid? One person per workplace isn’t enough - what if they’re away at lunch or home sick when the incident happens? Or, if they’re the patient who needs help? Make sure you have someone from each team who knows the basics of CPR and first aid.

Do you have a first aid kit and is it fully stocked? Is someone in charge of checking this and reporting back on a regular basis? It’s not uncommon for someone to dash in, use a few plasters and bandages and forget to tell anyone, meaning it’s not replaced in time for the next person in need. Do you have the right supplies for your type of work? If your job is a physical one, you’ll possibly need more ice packs and splint materials than, say, an office workplace.

Do you have an AED (automated external defibrillator) on site or do you know there is one nearby? Cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in NZ adults, killing 5 times that of the national road toll every year. It can happen to anyone, at any time, without warning. The early use of an AED and CPR gives a patient their best chance of survival - so where is your nearest AED?

Heart Saver is in the business of saving lives, through AED supply, event medic cover and first aid training. To book your scenario-based workplace training, email our friendly team at [email protected] or see www.heartsaver.co.nz for more information.

Winter brings both physical and mental challenges, but here are some ideas to help keep you well during the colder months.

It is important to understand what sickness truly looks like. It may be in the form of a fever, (bacterial infection), or a common cold (viral infection). If you genuinely have a bacterial or viral infection, and would like to learn a little on how to avoid sickness - the following will be of great help to you.

1. Keep moving While it’s tempting to hibernate during the colder months, maintaining some kind of exercise programme over the winter will have significant benefits. As long as you choose a programme that’s right for you and your condition, physical activity can make it easier to sleep and breathe, help with relaxation and balance, and assist with maintaining a healthy bodyweight. Try mixing it up and trying something new such as:

• Walking.

• Jogging.

• Swimming.

• Biking.

• Yoga/ BODYBALANCE®

Activities should be done in mild temperatures, (outside preferred), at a low intensity, (keeping your Heart Rate low).

Exercise is great for the soul, but it is important to refrain from vigorous exercise while your immune system fights infection.

2. Eat well The foods you eat directly affect your recovery and can reduce the risk of falling sick in the first place. How to help prevent illness:

• Eat a balanced whole food diet.

• Eat nutrient-dense foods and feed your healthy bacteria.

Six steps to maintain winter wellness

Phil Kingi - Personal Trainer Manager, Les Mills New Lynn

• Make sure you have your vitamins. Vitamin C helps keep your immune system healthy, and can help reduce the length and severity of a cold if you get one.

• As well as considering supplements, fill your fruit bowl with lemons, oranges and feijoas. Iron and zinc are also keys to a healthy immune system. You can boost your dietary intake of these goodies by looking for dark, leafy greens and red and yellow vegetables, which are all high in antioxidants.

• You may want to consider supplementing your diet with probiotics. But you need to understand that if you’re not eating a balanced, whole food diet, supplementing with probiotics won’t do much good. These types of foods include dairy, yogurt, cheese, and kefir with live and active cultures, fermented vegetables: pickles, sauerkraut, kimchi, Fermented soy: miso, tempeh, Miscellaneous: soy sauce and wine.

3. How to aid recovery if you are already unwell• Eat when you’re hungry (normally when you have a cold).

• Don’t eat if you’re not hungry (normally when you have a fever).

• Consider immune boosting supplements.

4. Wash your handsIt sounds ridiculously simple, but regular and careful handwashing is the number one way to stop the spread of germs. Carry hand-sanitiser.

Sleep: Having enough good quality sleep is one of the best things you can do for your health and it’s vital during winter to keep your immune system in optimum condition. The average person needs between seven and nine hours every night, so do yourself a favour and turn in early every now and then this winter.

5. Stay Hydrated Drink lots of fluidsDehydration will leave you at a higher risk of catching a cold or a flu, while moisture will help make mucous membranes, including those in your sinuses, more resistant to bacteria. Water and green tea are especially useful. Focus on immune-boosting foods such as honey, garlic, berries, green tea and chicken soup.

At the end of the day, everyone probably becomes sick at one point or another, so unless you are Superman or Superwoman, you’ll fall prey eventually. Use the steps in this article to take yourself back into your routine quickly.

Why New Zealand’s Retiring Business Owners Represent a Golden Opportunity

Warwick RussellManaging Director, Smetric

Since starting our consulting business over 7 years ago, I have spent a lot of time with small and medium enterprise (SME) owners, bankers and other networks. I have really been keeping my finger on the pulse of what’s happening with SMEs in New Zealand. One aspect of working with SMEs that really interests me is the number of retiring business owners. Many retiring owners have built strong operating businesses with track records often extending over decades. However, many do not have actionable succession or exit strategies in place. Many aren’t booming in this current booming economy either.

Retiring OwnersA large number of SMEs are owned by the “baby boomer” generation, with about 61% of business owners being over the age of 50 years. It is this same generation where many are entering retirement without having a clear path to exit or a succession plan to ensure continuity of the business. Only 10% of those expecting to exit have a plan.

Herein lies the opportunity for high net-worth investors and other business owners who are willing to invest in acquiring sound SME operating businesses with proven track records, established management teams and further capacity to grow. Such businesses can be acquired at moderate profit multiples, while using leveraged and retained earnings to further improve the returns of the business.

The opportunities are greatest with SMEs with annual turnover between $2 million to $10 million and an EBITDA margin of at least 10%. There needs to be sufficient cash flow to service debt and allow for reinvestment for growth. Unfortunately, we see many that are not performing this well in NZ.

Ripe for DisruptionRipe for disruption are businesses from traditional areas such as manufacturing, construction and distribution. They are often characterised by low levels of adoption of technology and a lack of energy by owners not having an appetite for revitalisation. Adding to the opportunity is the fact that very few private equity firms pursue

SMEs.

Inherent RisksPassive investors are less likely to invest in SMEs given the considerable levels of time, energy and risk involved. Buying into an operating business will require considerable capital and there may be legacy issues under previous ownership. They must also consider how long they intend to hold onto the investment and overall exit strategy. Few passive investors will have the appetite to take on such a strategy. This leaves high-net worth individuals and other family owned businesses as the most likely buyers.

Return ExpectationsGiven the time and risks involved in investing in a business, to be attractive to an investor, the underlying returns will need to outperform other investments that have a similar risk profile. While a few investors may look for businesses that require a turnaround, most are focused on businesses where an acquisition in providing a means of continuity and the business is well positioned for growth.

What’s your strategy for exiting?

than $35.24 per hour. But jobs with ANZSCO codes 4 - 5 are not classified as mid-skilled roles if they are within the same wage band.

Regardless of the relevant ANZSCO skill level, if the job has a wage of $35.25 or more per hour the job will be regarded as high skilled.

In short for skill level 4 and 5 roles you only have 2 options - it is either a high skilled job or a low skilled job.

Jobs are now divided into 3 skill levels. The skill level is determined by the ANZSCO code associated with the job (this is the same as the old rules), but the determining factor will be the wage paid.

What are the implications of being assessed as either low, mid or high skilled?

The biggest implication is for the lower skilled roles.

People who are in jobs that are assessed as low - will be required to spend one year outside New Zealand after 3 years, if, during that 3 years they were issued work visas. To avoid this stand down period they will need to apply for a Work Visa in a role that is considered mid- skilled or higher - skilled at the end of the three-year period or during the three-year period.

People in low skilled jobs will only be given 12 month work visas. Their family members will only be able to join them in New Zealand if they qualify for visas in their own right.

What are the skill levels?

Regardless of what the ANZSCO skill level is, if the wage is less than $19.97 per hour the job will be deemed as low skilled.

Jobs with ANZSCO codes 1 - 3 will only be regarded as mid-skilled jobs if they are paying above $19.97 per hour but less

If a person is in a skill level 1 - 3 role will only be able to obtain residence if they are paid more than $23.49 per hour and the job is assessed as a substantial match to an ANZSCO job in the skill level claimed which appears on the list of skilled occupations.

If a person is in a skill level 4 - 5 role they will only be able to apply for residence under the skilled migrant category if they are paid $35.24 per hour. Again, the job must be a substantial match to an ANZSCO job on the list of skilled occupations.

The ultimate lesson to be learnt by the employers - if you want to support people for residence be prepared to create pathways to promotion and higher wages.

What is also creeping into policies relating to residence and work visas is the ability for Immigration New Zealand to assess the “diversity” of the workplace. This will have the following implications:

1. If there is a level of pay disparity between staff who are seeking visas and local staff members, the employer will be penalised as will the Visa applicants.

2. It will also allow immigration New Zealand to target employers from particular ethnic backgrounds who have a predisposition to employing people from the same culture and in particular where the workforce is predominantly made up of people from the same ethnic background.

3. It will also permit immigration New Zealand to be able to implement the government’s objective to eliminate the disparity in wages and salaries between men and women.
