HistoryCentury Gothic was heavily influenced by Sol Hess’s face type 20th Century. The Monotype staff decided to enlarge the x-height of 20th Century and call their font Century Gothic. Twentieth Century was drawn by Sol Hess between 1936 and 1947. It was influenced by the geometric style sans serif faces that were popular during the 20’s and 30’s.
Purpose
The purpose of Century Gothic was to modify 20th Century to ensure satisfactory output from modern digital systems. It has been very useful for advertizing, newspaper/magazine headlines, and general display work.
