Ralf Klein
Managing Director of International Sales
DEAR SOLAR ExpERtS,Thank you for your confidence in Centrosolar. Your support and the ongoing demand for
high-performance, high-quality photovoltaic products allows us once again to look to the
future with optimism, because we know: the future belongs to renewable energies.
Most recently, the nuclear disaster in Fukushima has shown us that sustainability and
security are in the forefront more than ever before when it comes to supplying people
and commerce around the world with energy – energy which can be generated without
risk and used efficiently. The market for intelligent photovoltaic solutions will therefore
consistently continue to grow. We are delighted to be a part of this positive development.
In January, an exclusive manufacturing agreement was reached between Centrosolar AG
and the Taiwanese semiconductor company TSMC, making further capacity expansion in
our Sonnenstromfabrik solar factory in Wismar a certainty. This facility is already amongst
the largest and most modern producers of solar modules in Europe, and is currently being
expanded through the addition of a state of the art production hall and warehouse,
which will commence operation in autumn 2011. This will increase the capacity in Wismar
from around 200 MWp to 350 MWp over the medium term.
As usual, our current module portfolio only features solar modules of the highest quality
from our production facility in Wismar. We are proud to once again be able to present
you with a mature range of outstanding, reliable, high-performance and future-oriented
products.
Yours,
Ralf Klein

Centrosolar Sonnen-
stromfabrik GmbH in
Wismar
All solar modules used in
Centrosolar photovoltaic
panels are sourced from
our own production facility,
the Sonnenstromfabrik in
Wismar. Every year,
modules with a sum
capacity of 200 MWp roll
off the line – equivalent to
the power requirements of
around 90,000 households.
Even today, the Sonnen-
stromfabrik is one of the
largest and most modern
module producers in
Europe. When the new
production hall and
warehouse commences
operations in autumn, the
Sonnenstromfabrik capacity
will increase to almost
350 MWp.

used in both residential
and building services
engineering as well as in
parking meters and for
traffic control. Around the
world, the modules from
Wismar are known for their
reliability and endurance,
and stand for excellent
‘Made in Germany’ quality.
Production is almost fully
automatic, with six modern
production lines. The
Sonnenstromfabrik is DIN
EN ISO 9001:2008 and DIN
EN ISO 14001:2009
compliant.

this remains the case in the
future, our modules are
regularly subjected to a
series of extensive test
procedures: both by the
experienced technicians
and engineers monitoring
module production in our
Sonnenstromfabrik in
Wismar, and by indepen-

Our independent certifications at a glance.
The seal of the independent
testing institute TÜV
Rheinland certifies the safety
and product quality of our solar
modules according to currently
valid IEC standards.
The Association for Electrical,
Electronic & Information
Technologies awards the VDE
seal of approval for manage-
ment systems. The quality and
environmental management of
the Centrosolar Sonnenstromfa-
brik meets the high require-
ments of this standard. We are
DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 and
14001:2009 compliant.
The Institute for Corrosion
Protection Dresden GmbH
exposed our modules to a
60-day salt spray test according
to DIN EN ISO 9227-NSS, which
tests the modules for consistent
performance and corrosion
resistance under intense
conditions. The NSST test
corresponds to a real period of
operation of over 20 years for
an installed S-Class module.
The CE label documents
the compliance of a product
with basic safety and health
protection requirements, as
laid down in the relevant
European Commission
directives. Our modules
meet all requirements, and
are thus authorised for sale
in Europe.
The British Board of
Agrément has awarded
Centrosolar modules their
seal of approval. The
‘Photovoltaic Module
Microgeneration Certifica-
tion Mark’ is only awarded
to modules of outstanding
quality.
Centrosolar has submit-
ted modules to Underwri-
ters Laboratories Inc. (UL)

their inspection certificates
the safety of electronic
components according to
the valid regulations in the

are also subjected to many
intensive tests while still in
the Centrosolar Sonnen-
stromfabrik.
Our specialists leave
nothing to chance, and test
the modules and solar cells
both during and after
production.
11
Are the materials embedded in the module
durable enough to guarantee a long service life?
Can the solar cell withstand even hot water?
Cross-linking test
This test procedure tests the embedded material in the
module for durability. The film ensures that the conductive
rails in the solar cell are hermetically sealed against
weather conditions. For the module to remain serviceable
for over 20 years, the film must permanently and seam-
lessly bind to the module. The cross-linking test is not only
carried out by Centrosolar, but also additionally by
independent test authorities.
Hot water test
In a hot water test, the solar cell is exposed to water
heated to approx. 70° C for a long period of time. This
tests to see if the aluminium alloys on the rear of the solar
cell begin to loosen from the solar cell under the influence
of moisture. The test, which was first developed by the
Centrosolar Research and Innovation Department, initially
bore the name of its inventory, Erik Eikelboom. It has since
become one of the standard test procedures for solar cells,
and is in regular use by many companies in the photovol-
taics field.
12
The EL test shows how efficiently
the solar cell functions.
How does snow and wind load
affect the module?
Electroluminescence (EL) test
The recently developed EL test makes it possible to detect
even marginal damage to a module using a procedure
similar to the production of an x-ray image. Material and
processing defects can be discovered just as easily as
hairline cracks that may have been caused by improper
transportation for example. During the test procedure, the
solar module is energised and the resulting glow – known
as electroluminescence – recorded with a special, highly
sensitive camera. The light intensity makes it possible to
draw conclusions on the efficiency at which the tested
solar cell operates: dark or even black areas indicate that
no power is flowing in these areas. This part of the cell is
inactive, possibly indicating e.g. microscopic cracks,
breakages or contact finger faults – defects with immedia-
te consequences for the capacity of a module, which may
be reliably established using this test.
Mechanical Load (ML) test
The ML test simulates the effect of snow and wind on the
module. During the test, the module is clamped in place
and subjected to a variable push and pull load of up to
5400 Pa over six seconds using a hydraulic system. To
meet the high quality requirements in place at Centrosolar,
the module must survive the test completely undamaged.
The ML test and all relevant control measurements
conform to the requirements of the IEC standard EN IEC
61215:2005. Accordingly, the module is also suitable for
prolonged use under extreme climatic conditions.
13
Tests in the climate chamber allow precise conclusions
to be drawn on the life expectancy of the module.
Are the soldered connections
secure enough?
Peel test
The peel test is a measurement procedure which tests the
quality of the soldered connections in a module under
dynamic load conditions. It is carried out during running
production so as to be able to eliminate weak points at
cells or cell connectors at the earliest possible point.
The DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 certified quality management
system in place at Centrosolar AG is geared towards
checking all production steps and all machines in use at
regular intervals. In this way, we can be sure that only
modules of superior quality and resilience leave our
Sonnenstromfabrik.
Climate chamber test
The climate chamber is capable of recreating, in a
controlled environment, the climatic conditions to which a
solar panel is exposed over changing seasons. The damp
heat test, for example, exposes the module to a tempera-
ture of 85° C for 42 days. The humidity in the climate
chamber over this time is 85% – simulating extreme
conditions similar to plant operation in the tropics.
International standards require a mere 1,000 hours, but
Centrosolar regularly carries out internal tests in which
single modules are exposed to such conditions for up to
5,000 hours.
The thermo-cycle test facilitates a reliable forecast of the
probable life expectancy of a module by exposing it to up
to 200 cycles of varying temperatures between 85° and
-40° C.
