“Each mobile network is a living object.”Prof. Dr. Mathias Gabrysch, University of Applied Sciences Munich

For years the number of so-called smartphones has continuously grown boos-ting the need for ever bigger bandwidths in mobile networks. In 2013, not less than 267 million gigabytes of mobile data were transmitted in Germany - and the trend is rising . To meet the rapidly growing customer demands, mobile operators are forced to expand the networks in ever shorter cycles by building additional base stations and implementing modern technologies such as LTE.

Apart from the enormous amount of phone calls and data, mobile network operators have to manage the fast and frequently changing demands on the networks: major events, holiday seasons or unforeseen disasters sometimes require short-term changes in the configuration of the networks.

In addition, mobile service providers usually rely on various suppliers for the construc-tion and operation of their networks. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate and turn a multitude of components into a large, reliable whole. "Each mobile network is a living object" affirms Prof. Dr. Mathias Gabrysch, mobile communications expert, who teaches also Innovation Management at the Munich University of Applied Sciences and in the past worked in Network Management for the telecommunications giant Huawei.

Vodafone Germany GmbH had been facing similar challenges when it called for a worldwi-de tender in search of a high-power solution for the configuration of its network.

The solution – the CPCM from MicroNova

In this bidding competition the software and systems house MicroNova AG succeeded with its Common Planning and Configuration Manager (CPCM), a management solution for mobile networks with valuable benefits for mobile network operators and, above all, their end customers. The tool helps operators to continuously improve the network quality and, to give an example, minimize the number of dropped calls.

The CPCM has been used in the environment of wireless telecommunications for more than ten years and has since been continuously further developed in close cooperation with network operators. The high degree of practical experience has always been the fo-cus of attention to make the day-to-day work for management and staff easier and more effective when it comes to Network Planning and Configuration. Vodafone Germany is the first organisation of the global telecommunications group Vodafone, where the software producer MicroNova is introducing the CPCM.

One of the advantages of the CPCM is the high speed allowing the integration of new network elements into existing infrastructures - a vital competitive advantage in network expansion. Irrespective of the manufacturer of the equipment or the technology applied: the CPCM generates the vendor-specific configuration data for all vendors of the techno-logies GSM, UMTS and LTE. What is even more, the solution excels by its high flexibility and process support.

The result – Centralized Network Mangement

Vodafone and MicroNova devided the introduction of the CPCM into two phases. During the first phase, MicroNova not only took charge of the supply of the software components but also integrated the solution into the existing processes at Vodafone. The integration of the CPCM into the Radio Access Network (RAN), consisting of equipment from different vendors was completed in late October 2014. Since then Vodafone has been checking and optimizing the configuration of the active network with the help of the CPCM and is establishing key policies.

In parallel, at the beginning of October 2014 MicroNova launched the second phase of the project in whose course the network management solution CPCM shall be integrated into the existing system environment at Vodafone and linked with the planning and optimiza-tion tools. This will allow Vodafone in the future to configure RAN planning data from one single system and import these data via an automated process into the live network, as of spring 2015.

"We are very excited that Vodafone Germany has opted for our solution," says Dietmar Dunkel, head of the department Telecommunications & Network Management at Micro-Nova. "Through its cross-vendor and multi-technology approach the CPCM meets the high demands of leading mobile network operators. Reliability and sustainability are guaran-teed."

Conclusion

Thanks to MicroNova's Common Planning and Configuration Manager Vodafone is able to continuously monitor and optimize its mobile network in Germany. Network parameters can be configured and transferred to the live network more easily. The rapid integration of additional network equipment is an important element for present and future customer satisfaction. Vodafone gets all these advantages by MicroNova's centralized, consolidated solution.
