The ONLITE group battery system excels by combining maximum func-
tionality with seamless integration into the general lighting system. Sev-
eral self-contained systems ensure straightforward installation and quick
commissioning. ONLITE central LPS makes it possible to control and
monitor every luminaire individually. Emergency lighting is integrated into
the general lighting system and connection to the lighting management
system is obtained via DALI. The group batteries can be networked using
Ethernet in order to be able to control and monitor essential functions via
a graphical user interface.

Together, ONLITE central LPS and innovative LED emer-
gency and escape sign luminaires make a great team. Using
efficient LED luminaires which provide light distribution that
is perfectly matched to emergency lighting needs keeps the
installed load to a bare minimum. This means that required
battery capacities can be smaller and supply systems can
be significantly more compact. Communication between the
ONLITE central LPS system and the LED luminaires is based
on Powerline, which allows individual control and monitor-
ing of every luminaire. Emergency lighting can be operated
completely independently of the general lighting system.

ONLITE central LPS and
integrated LED emergency
lighting systems

General lighting luminaires can be integrated into the emer-
gency lighting system in order to achieve a uniform ceil-
ing look. The ONLITE central LPS system ensures visual
matching and optimal functional integration into the gen-
eral lighting system. Every luminaire can be integrated into
a Zumtobel lighting management system via the ONLITE
central LPS system’s built-in DALI interface. Special LED
solutions can be integrated into the general lighting system
in order to improve the efficiency of emergency lighting and
reduce the required battery capacities. This combines the
advantages of separate emergency lighting luminaires and
the enhanced appearance of a consistent ceiling look. The
light sources for the general lighting system are powered
through the conventional wiring system, and the LEDs for
the emergency lighting system are powered by the ONLITE
central LPS system.

3 output circuits
Up to 20 luminaires can be
connected to each of the
three output circuits of the
EPS 360 Controller. The
maximum permissible in-
stalled load per circuit is:
552 VA (mains operation)
and 120 W (emergency
operation).
The EPS 360 Controller is the core of every ONLITE central
LPS system. Depending on the size of the system, several
of these self-contained units are installed in order to ensure
maximum possible redundancy and hence optimum safety.
All settings and test logs are stored in non-volatile memory.
No data loss even in event of complete shutdown (mains
and battery power).
13
Programmable test cycles
The date and time of day of all function and service
life/annual system tests can be user programmed.
This prevents tests being performed at inoppor-
tune times, e. g. while a film is being shown in a
cinema.
Electronic test log book
All function and service life/annual system tests
are logged and stored in the electronic test log
book of the EPS 360 Controller for at least three
years. The test log book can be read out at any
time via an infrared or RS 232 interface.
Methods of connection
A wide variety of methods of connection guar-
antees maximum flexibility. Luminaires can be
switched individually or as a complete circuit. With
the individual method of connection, it is possible
to specify, for every individual luminaire, whether
it is to be set up in maintained mode, non-main-
tained mode or switched via any of the switching
inputs. In addition, every EPS 360 Controller has
a built-in automatic staircase lighting function.
Emergency lighting level at the push of a button The
emergency lighting level is set on the touch-sensitive display
of the EPS 360 Controller. These values, based on photo-
metric calculations, can be entered one circuit at a time or
for each individual luminaire. Zumtobel luminaires with DALI
dimmable ballasts (luminaire names starting with LDE) allow
individual definition of the dimming level in emergency op-
erating mode. The emergency luminous flux of emergency
luminaires can be reduced gradually down to 5 % of the
normal lighting.
Flexible illuminance levels Cut costs and reduce environmental impact
In the case of conventional emergency lighting solutions
with non-programmable emergency lighting levels, output in
emergency mode is identical to that in normal (mains opera-
tion) mode. This requires relatively high battery capacities
and results in higher energy consumption.
In most cases, 10 % of the lumen package of the mains
lighting is sufficient to guarantee minimum illuminance when
operating in emergency mode. The programmable emer-
gency lighting level minimises system costs because sets of
batteries and central installations can be designed consider-
ably smaller; this also helps reduce environmental impact.

sources must not be connected to
the Powerline network.
■ Band-stop filters or filters are not
permitted in the Powerline domain.
■ Where the length of parallel cable
runs cannot be restricted to 10 m,
cables which are parallel must be
spaced at least 5 cm apart.
■ The maximum cable length is 300 m
(1.5 to 4 mm²).
Design tips
Individual monitoring of luminaires
Monitoring of circuits
With individual monitoring of luminaires, there is an intelligent
monitoring module inside every emergency luminaire which
communicates with the central emergency lighting power
source via Powerline. Every emergency luminaire is assigned
a unique luminaire address at the time of commissioning.
This makes it possible to display the status of each individual
emergency luminaire on the ONLITE central LPS.
An EPS 360 Controller which measures the power output
into its output circuit in order to ascertain whether all the
luminaires in the circuit are operating correctly is a distinc-
tive feature of this circuit monitoring. In the case of circuit
monitoring, only circuit-wide switching is possible.
Benefi ts
■ When an emergency luminaire fails, the location of
the faulty luminaire is pinpointed.
■ Emergency luminaires in one output circuit can be
individually configured to various modes of opera-
tion.
■ Emergency luminaires can be integrated into DALI
lighting control.
■ Emergency lighting levels can be programmed via
central emergency lighting power source.
Benefi ts
■ Luminaires do not have to be equipped with
add-on modules.
■ Any load suitable for AC/DC may be connected.
Disadvantage
■ It is not possible to pinpoint every individual lumi-
naire failure (depends on wattage mix of output
circuit and output of the luminaires).

Integration into a lighting
management system
Central monitoring using
GO-ON package
The DALI interface ensures that emergency lighting can be
integrated seamlessly into general lighting. DALI commands
are converted to Powerline signals and are sent to the emer-
gency and escape sign luminaires. This way, every luminaire
can be individually controlled and included in automation
processes. LUXMATE lighting control systems make it pos-
sible to fully exploit a whole raft of advantages offered by
ONLITE central LPS.
Note: If DALI lighting control is enabled, the “central switch-
ing using switching inputs” and “local L' switching” functions
will no longer be available.
Note: ONLITE Central LPS version with Ethernet (Nport x)
must be used.
The ONLITE GO-ON package visualisation module provides
users with a convenient facility for monitoring their entire
ONLITE emergency lighting system from one central loca-
tion. Perfectly planned monitoring systems link up the group
or separate battery systems in one or more buildings into an
intelligent information network, which delivers information on
the status of the emergency lighting system round the clock.

Besides the internal controller and circuit modules, a battery with a
capacity of up to 75 Ah is accommodated in the main distribution unit of
the emergency lighting power supply. In addition, outgoing fuse protec-
tion for external sub-distribution boards of the emergency lighting system
can be catered for. It is preferable to use compact or combined stations
in medium-sized buildings.

Every ONLITE central CPS offers full functionality in order to comprehen-
sively meet the requirements placed on a central battery system using
as few components as possible. No additional software or modules are
needed. There is no need to fit any separate components in the luminaire
because every DALI luminaire can be used as an emergency luminaire
which can be individually monitored and controlled. This also reduces
effort on commissioning, inspecting and maintaining the system. A large
removable Touch PC is the core of the system. It enables, for example,
straightforward commissioning by one person or neatly laid out, easily-
manageable visualisation of the system’s status.

ONLITE central CPS and
LED systems
www.zumtobel.com/onlite
Combining ONLITE central CPS with innovative LED emer-
gency and escape sign luminaires offers distinct advan-
tages. Using efficient LED luminaires that provide light
distribution which is perfectly matched to emergency light-
ing needs keeps the installed load to a bare minimum. This
means that required battery capacities can be smaller and
supply systems can be significantly more compact. Com-
munication between the CPS system and LED luminaires
is based on DALI and therefore supports individual control
and monitoring of every luminaire. Emergency lighting can
be operated completely independently of the general light-
ing system.
Every DALI standard luminaire is also an emergency luminaire

ONLITE central CPS and
general lighting system
Every DALI standard luminaire can be used as an emergency
luminaire which can be individually controlled and moni-
tored. No additional modules need to be fitted to achieve
this, and functionality of the general lighting system is com-
pletely preserved. This simplifies project planning, reduces
both costs and effort and makes choosing luminaires easy.
Delivery times for emergency luminaires are short because
they are luminaires in the standard product range.5
A system control centre for operating, displaying and networking
ONLITE central CPS sets new standards when it comes to monitoring
and display of emergency lighting systems. A 7" LED-backlit WVGA
widescreen (16:9) colour Touch PC displays the entire installation. Touch
and control: It takes no more than three touches to access individual
luminaire data and status displays. All events are recorded for at least
three years on a built-in SD card as a test log book.
Ethernet / WLAN / Internet
Networkability comes as standard
Every ONLITE central CPS module can be visu-
alised via Ethernet using a web-based browser
without the need for any additional software.
The system can therefore be managed remotely
from any PC.

System status
Neatly laid out status display, includes system
voltage and battery temperature among other
parameters. Faults are displayed in plain lan-
guage and indicated visually.
Details of substations
Each of up to 7 substations can be displayed
on the central Touch PC. This simplifies the
job of the person tasked with maintenance
and helps them keep an overview of the entire
installation.
Details of luminaire status
Each individual luminaire is displayed at the
control centre. As well as visual error display,
further additional information is made avail-
able. The Touch PC provides details of the
location, light source type, wattage, method
of connection and address of every individual
luminaire.
Plug-in and networkPortable Touch PC for commissioning
Besides performing major system documentation and display tasks,
the removable unit with LED backlighting also offers substan-
tial benefits when commissioning the ONLITE central CPS system.
This operating and control unit plugs not only into the control centre
but also into every substation – for local commissioning, for example.
Every cabinet is equipped with a four-pole plug connector for this pur-
pose. Two conductors carry the 24 V power supply and two carry data.
The large number of ports is indicative
of the high quality of the unit’s internal
components: the Touch PC has no ro-
tating parts and is therefore extremely
rugged; the Windows CE Pro operating
system is pre-installed and it also has
an SD memory card with a storage
capacity of 512 MB.
A single cable is used for the 24 V sup-
ply voltage and the control bus.
33
All system information is available
anywhere on the network through Web
services. As well as querying the sys-
tem status, emergency luminaires can
also be visually addressed quickly and
easily. A combination of Powerline and
WLAN link provides the best possible
freedom of action. Using repeaters
eliminates the possibility of any gaps
in radio coverage. This “one-man”
commissioning saves both time and
money.

Monitoring of circuits
Types of monitoring
Individual monitoring of luminaires
Monitoring of circuits
using LUXMATE LITENET
Circuit monitoring is used primarily in extensive buildings
which have consistent lighting concepts. Industrial factory
buildings and parking garages are typical examples of such
buildings. Even a circuit error of 10 % can be localised in final
circuits which incorporate luminaires of similar wattages.
Individual monitoring is preferred in buildings such as shop-
ping malls, hospitals or museums where there are a variety
of lighting systems. Addressable, switchable and dimmable
standard luminaires with DALI ballasts are used. Here too, it
is possible to set the desired emergency power level without
any additional components. Besides conventional DC emer-
gency operation, the built-in security function also trips in AC
emergency mode. This guarantees consistent functionality,
even if the control cable is interrupted or short-circuited.
Using LUXMATE LITNET, the leading lighting system which
is used in large office buildings in particular, allows the user
to dispense with a large proportion of ONLITE central CPS
hardware and software for luminaire monitoring. A system
with circuit monitoring is sufficient; individual monitoring
of luminaires is taken care of by LITENET. This way, every
emergency luminaire need only be addressed once at the
time of commissioning.
■ Straightforward design and commissioning ■ Use of standard luminaires with electronic ballasts ■ Lower investment costs but restricted functionality
■ Maximum safety ■ Lower operating costs ■ Maximum functionality
■ Maximum convenience and flexibility■ Many ONLITE central CPS functions are already incor-
porated in the LUXMATE LITENET lighting management
system■ Easy commissioning
35
Variable monitoring Anything is possible: circuit, individual luminaires or a combination of both systems
Monitoring of circuits or monitoring of indi-
vidual luminaires may be useful, depending
on the particular application. ONLITE central
CPS caters for specific circumstances, every
station can be designed with both methods of
connection. The modular system design even
makes it possible to mix modules with circuit
monitoring and modules with individual moni-
toring of luminaires within one installation. One
to three bays are available for monitoring mod-
ules depending on the design of the relevant
distribution cabinet. These bays can either be
fitted with modules for circuit-wide monitoring
or individual monitoring of luminaires. Every
module can handle 1 to 20 circuits.

input (S1) is designed as a critical circuit and, as a rule, is used for the
phase detector loop. Several phase detector loops or other potential-free
switching inputs can be parameterised. Each of the switching inputs is
connected to the internal 24 V reference potential. Eight other potential-
free inputs are optionally available for each ONLITE central CPS station.

Emergency lighting with LUXMATE LITENETDesign tips
This system topology is based on an ONLITE central CPS with circuit-
monitored modules (S). All luminaires (general and emergency luminaires)
are metallically separated from one or more common DALI chains and
networked to the LAN hardware (Ethernet, TCP/IP) via the LITENET
netlink. All status in formation is available via the LUXMATE LITENET
network. The ONLITE central CPS operates completely independently,
and autonomously forwards messages concerning battery and charger
to LUXMATE LITENET via the Ethernet network.

ately switch to the configured value. This security function is exe-
cuted without communicating with the emergency luminaires.
System project planningStep-by-step guide to the perfect lighting solution
Do photometric calculations for escape routes
Defi ne percentage Ballast Lumen Factor (BLF) as basis
for output of each emergency luminaire
Plan the locations of escape sign luminaires
Defi ne the circuits in each fi re compartment
Add up power output (PAC and PDC) of all emergency
and escape sign luminaires for each output circuit
Determine battery capacity depending on duration
of battery-powered operation
The entire design process is broken down into individual
design steps in order to ensure a target-oriented approach
when designing emergency lighting. This is a tried-and-
tested strategy for arriving at the optimum solution.

ONLITE central CPS
Central Battery System –
safety ensured by modular
large-size unit.
The progress of ONLITE emer-gency lighting systems is based on the strategy - unique in the world – of using any DALI lumi-naire as an emergency luminaire, monitoring it and supplying it with emergency power in case of an emergency. Maintenance work is done fully automatically, faults are displayed clearly.
New, and especially suitable for projects involving more than 100 emergency luminaires: the CPS Central Power System with a mobile monitoring and programming unit, which comes as a touch-sensitive panel with colour display, Ethernet and Web browser link, USB port and multimedia card, relying on state-of-the-art technology as well as utmost convenience, easy operation and flexibility.
