PROCEDURE FOR CORRECT APPLICATION, USE AND REMOVAL OF THE CABLE SPIKER

Step 1 - Cable Identification 1.1 Before spiking a cable, the correct procedure for cable identification as specified in the Power Systems Operation Manual and Local Management Instruction must be followed.

Step 2 - Clamp selection 2.1 The correct clamp must be selected, according to the size and type of cable to be spiked. The correct size of cartridge must also be selected (see Step 3). Failure to use the correct combination of clamp and cartridge could result in the spiking gun failing to fully penetrate the cable or cables. The next tables specify the clamp and cartridge to be used for different cables.

Note that full personal protective equipment shall be worn when fitting, using and removing the gun, including goggles, gloves, footwear and clothing. The gun is also heavy therefore good manual handling techniques shall be used.

Step 3 - Cartridge selection 3.1 The correct cartridge must be selected, according to the size and type of cable to be spiked. Failure to use the correct combination of clamp and cartridge could result in the spiking gun failing to fully penetrate the cable or cables and/or could damage the internals of the spiking gun

Red - (Heavy) for 11/33 kV SWA cables over 85 mm outside diameter in standard spiker. Up to 150mm diameter and 400mm2 3c XLPE cables in heavy duty spiker

Green - (Medium) for Lead sheathed and armoured cables above 185mm 2 and 300mm2 PICAS with copper conductors.

Silver - (Light) for Aluminium sheathed cables up to 300 mm² and aluminium conductors and all modern small diameter plastic sheathed cables up to 185mm2 Also for Triplex 11kV XLPE cables

Yellow - (Extra Light) for small polymeric insulated and sheathed cables.

NOTES ON USING THE PICAS CABLE CLAMP The conversion kit consists of a special cable clamp, part number 1430/9S that must only be used with the standard cable gun, replacing the standard cable clamp part number 1430/9. The clamp is designed so that one side marked 300 and 185 takes both the 300 mm2

and 185 mm2 conductor area cables. Providing only light grade cartridges are used (see under cartridge selection), no packing of this size of cable is required. The clamp is reversible to take the 95 mm² conductor area cable. It will be seen, from the diagram overleaf, that packing is necessary when spiking this size of cable. A short length (say 100 mm long) of scrap 95 mm2 cable should be used as packing by placing it under the cable to be spiked as shown in the diagram. Alternatively, a roll of lead strip (cc 5507570) or lead insert (cc 5507590) may be used. It will be found that the scrap length cable can be used as packing more than once by moving it to a new position.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SPIKE THE 95 mm2 CABLE WITHOUT PACKING OF THE TYPE DESCRIBED ABOVE, AS SERIOUS DAMAGE WILL RESULT TO THE GUN. In all other respects use the cable gun in the manner described in the procedure. Step 4 The following instructions describe setting up the gun on the cable. The numbers in brackets refer to the general view of the spiking gun on Page 11 of this procedure.

4.1 Clamp the gun securely to the cable. 4.2 Tighten the clamp bolts (26) evenly so that the cable clamp, depending on type, remains parallel to the barrel base (7). Cable clamps are reversible to accommodate various types of cable. 4.3 When spiking cables smaller that 100mm outside diameter, use lead packing pieces as shown. Lead packing is available on cc 5507570 or use lead insert cc 5507590. In the case of PIAS cables a spare piece of cable may be used. With TRIPLEX cables a spare piece of core MUST be used, creating a 'fourth' core. See the picture in Step 2

Step 5. 5.1 Unscrew and remove the breech cap (14) (right hand thread). 5.2 Insert the correct strength of cartridge into the breech block (4).

Maintain at least 90 mm of solid resistance to absorb the full thrust of the piston

Step 6 6.1 Screw the breech cap (14) back into place ensuring that the breech cap latch (15) trips past the extractor (5) and drops alongside the stop screw (33).

Step 7 7.1 Lay out the lanyard to its full seven metre length, so as to give a straight pull on the release pin. In some situations, i.e. deep excavations, it may be necessary to provide a ‘corner’ so that the release pin may be pulled at an angle perpendicular to the barrel. 7.2 Make sure that all non-essential personnel are safely clear of the danger area, to prevent inadvertent pulling of the release pin. Also ensure they are at least 7 metres clear when the pin is pulled out

Step 8 8.1 Pull back the hammer and push in the release pin (27) sufficiently far to retain the hammer in its cocked position. 8.2 Push in the red safety catch button as far as it will go. It is important to leave the area carefully so that the lanyard is not accidentally pulled. The gun is now ready for firing; the safety catch button will return automatically after firing.

Step 9 9.1 Fire the gun by a sharp pull on the lanyard. Observe all necessary safety precations in the event of a misfire! These are: (a) Do not touch anything. (b) Wait three minutes. (c) Ensure that the safety catch is in the safe position. (d) Ease the breech cap one full turn only and lift (tap) extractor to free cartridge rim from chamber. Note. Cartridges that have failed to fire should be returned with the gun for a report by the manufacturer.

Step 10 10.1 After the gun has correctly fired, unscrew the breech cap (14) one turn only. Lift the extractor (5) to release any trapped gases, which may otherwise forcibly eject the spent cartridge into the operator's face at high speed. Ensure suitable eye protection is worn. This is an important safety step!

Step 11 11.1 Once any trapped gases are completely released, fully unscrew the breech cap (14), lift the extractor (5) and remove the spent cartridge.

Step 12 12.1 Slacken the clamp nuts and free the gun from the clamp (9).

Step 13 13.1 Ensure that the spike has fully penetrated the cable by following the procedure in the PSOM 7.3 Section 9.25.

13.2 Remove the barrel, barrel base and piston punch (35) from the cable (Careful manual handling techniques should be used during this operation as the piston punch could be stuck in the cable.

13.2 Use the lever (supplied with the gun) between the barrel base and cable to lift, if necessary.

With Triplex and XLPE three core cables it will be necessary to use the jacking attachment to remove the spiking gun.

Step 14 14.1 After each use, clean the exterior of the gun, clamp and bolts etc. Store the gun and clamps in the storage box. and return for inspection and maintenance

NOTE - The gun may be used more than once on the same job, but this must be for the shortest period of time possible.

APPENDIX A HEAVY DUTY GUN A heavy duty cable gun is available from Accles & Shelvoke, capable of spiking steel wire armoured (SWA) cables up to 6 inches (150 mm) diameter. This gun has a large capacity barrel base (45), cable clamp (46) and piston punch (48). (See general drawing on page 11).

Note that only Accles & Shelvoke can fit these large capacity components, hence standard guns cannot be modified by users.
