Testimonials“Choir is my family. It’s provided an opportunity for me to make friends in disciplines outside my own. A Cappella Choir enables us to work together to create something bigger than ourselves to share with our community.”

“Choir does more for me than just continue vocal music from high school. I have gained a sense of community and belonging. We have culturall experiences I could not afford on my own. The opportunities we are given as a choir could never be replicated. We have the ability to connect emotionally through music with our audiences in ways that move them to their feet, to tears and sometimes a quiet “amen” at the end of a song. Choir for me is an experience I will remember for a lifetime.”

“In my time at Central, I’ve been given the opportunity to travel the country and see the world. My A Cappella Choir experience, has given me the opportunity to touch lives. There is nothing as spectacular as the moment you see an audience member with tears in their eyes because of something you have worked so hard to give them.”
Cameron Van KootenSenior

“The A Cappella Choir provides great opportunities to work together to participate in something larger than ourselves, that transcends our own personal existence. It provides connections across the world: food, music, art, and architecture common human threads. We all seek mutual understanding and choir tour challenge assumptions providing us with an opportunity to encounter the world.”

Central College A Cappella Choir has maintained a strong commitment to artistic choral excellence for eighty years. As part of a liberal arts university education, it is comprised of 65 select, auditioned students from across academic disciplines with a desire to develop artistic vision and the creative aspects of education. They perform a variety of quality choral literature selected from a vast geographic and historic choral repertoire. In addition to inspiring the campus community, this prestigious choir performs regularly in churches, schools and concert halls across the Midwestern region of the United States. Every spring the choir embarks upon either an extended tour to major cities in America or an international tour. The choir is under the direction of Mark A. Babcock, the Farver Endowed Chair in Music and Director of Choral Activities at Central College.
Central College Chamber Singers is a highly select choir of 20 singers and is a subset of the A Cappella Choir. They perform literature from all style periods suited for a smaller, chamber vocal ensemble. Members are expected to be strong, independent musicians. This ensemble performs regularly on and off campus.
College-Community Chorus is a large choral ensemble including students, faculty, staff and community members. They perform once each semester with the College-Community Orchestra and focus on the large master choral works. Recent semesters have included Handel’s Messiah, Brahm’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem and Schubert’s Mass in G.
Vocal Combos offer solo opportunities for vocalists interested in performing jazz or contemporary music. Soloists are accompanied by student instrumentalists with the same interest. Combos performs several times each year. Vocal Combos is under the direction of Gabriel Espinosa, associate professor of music.
Central AwardsScholarships of up to $2000 per year for four years. These interest-based awards are available to all incoming students wanting to continue their involvement at the college level as a major area or extra-curricular activity. Students must be admitted to Central prior to their audition, interview, and/or portfolio review.
