Eberle Winery is one of the most popular stops during a wine tasting

adventure in Paso Robles. In addition to the spacious tasting room w

a large gift shop and complimentary wine tasting, the facility also

includes underground caves, an expansive vineyard deck, bocce ball

courts, the Wild Boar event room with commercial kitchen and ple

of places to have a picnic lunch while enjoying the vineyard views.

Inside the tasting room guests have the opportunity to taste theEberle wines that continue to be top award winners. Made from esta

grapes, Gary Eberle and winemaker Ben Mayo handcraft each of the

wines for the 27,000 case production. On the tasting list you will fin

Chardonnay, Viognier, Muscat Canelli, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah,

Zinfandel, Sangiovese and Barbera. There are also a few delicious

If you are a Zinfandel fan, Eberle is still making some big ones

and you should try the 2008 Steinbeck/Wine-Bush Zinfandel. The

list of awards for this wine is lengthy and includes a Best of Class

and five gold medals. There are plenty of other wines available for

the non-Zin drinkers including the 2008 Ctes-du-Rbles and the

    just released 2011 Viognier.

Although Eberle has grown in production over the years, the

winery still has a warmth and family feel. On most visits to the

tasting room you will find the Eberle standard poodles, Cabernet

and Roussanne, wandering the tasting room for a little well deserved

attention. Eberle welcomes families and four-legged friends for an

    enjoyable experience.

Sixty-five is a very special number to Gary Eberle and no, it is

not his old football number. This year, when the Top 100 Most

Influential People in the U.S. Wine Industry list was published,

Gary was surprised to find himself on the list and in position 65. He

earned that position by his tireless promotion of the Paso Robles

wine region. Gary purchased raw land in Paso Robles, planted a

vineyard, built one of the first commercial wineries and proceeded todeliver wines that consistently win top awards.

Some refer to Gary as the grandfather of Paso Robles wine,

others as the godfather and some as one of the early pioneers.

Regardless of the title given to him, he is the owner of the longest

continuously run, privately owned winery in the Paso Robles AVA.

Over the course of the past 33 years he has introduced Syrah to the

US, he has won the most wines of any winery in the county, was

recently named Winery of the Year by the 2011 Sommelier

Challenge, has been a major champion and spokesperson for Paso

Robles wine and he is still going strong. I came to Paso knowing it

would be the next great wine region. The area had the ideal climate

and soils to grow many different grape varietals and a rustic charm

that drew me to the area. I could not have predicted all the

wonderful things that have happened the past 33 years and I am

honored to be acknowledged for my promotion of the area. I just

cant wait to see what happens next.

While there always seems to be something new going on at

Eberle Winery, there are a few things you can count on never

changing. The winery has always offered complimentary tasting and

plans to continue with that tradition. Hospitality is front and center

in the tasting room and the staff is always willing to take people on a

tour of the wine caves and share many of the Eberle stories. If a

bottle of Eberle wine has a varietal listed on the label you can be surethat it is 100% made from that varietal and all grapes are sourced in

Paso Robles from mostly estate grown fruit. The winery is also

committed to producing quality wines at affordable prices for

everyday drinking. And the other thing you can count on is that if

there is a reason for a BBQ, Gary will be more than happy to show

off his skills behind the grill.

Check the winerys website for other great events held throughout

the year. Almost every month there is either a winemakers dinner or

a BBQ. Dont forget to stop and say hello to the winerys Standard

    Poodles on your next visit.

PEAR VALLEY WINERYLiving the DreamBy lisa PreTTy

When Tom Maas finished serving in Vietnam in the late 1960s, he ended his to

in Germany. The Army base was located on a hillside surrounded by grapevines. H

enjoyed the picturesque views and vowed that someday he would live on his own

    hilltop vineyard.

Back in the USA, Tom grew a successful road construction company in Orange

County. When he decided it was time to pursue his dream, he left his son in charg

the business and, along with his wife Kathleen, purchased a 20-acre property in th

Paso Robles AVA on the west side of Highway 101 in San Miguel. The property, on

a pear orchard, was the perfect location to plant vines and build a home.

Planting 20 acres of grape vines was not enough for Tom. His dream of simply

having a hilltop vineyard grew to wanting to produce premium wine. He purchaseadditional land, planted more vines and built a 14,000-square-foot, state-of-the-ar

energy-efficient winery on Union Road in Paso Robles. Today, Pear Valley vineyard

total 113 acres of premium grapes including more than 20 different varieties. The

vineyards are operated with sustainable farming practices to ensure that the best fr

possible will still be grown there when the Maas grandchildren operate the farm.

The Maases dedication to the land, passion for producing the best wine possibl

and strategic approach to growth has resulted in an ideal environment for winemak

Jared Lee. With three estate vineyards offering diverse soil and climates we are ab

maximize the potential of each individual varietal. Blending from the large array of

varietals I am able to craft and create wines of distinction. I share the owners

philosophy of growing the brand slowly while offering high quality

    wines at an exceptional value.

In addition to the varieties typically found in Paso Robles such as

Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and

Syrah, Pear Valley has several lesser known and unique ones

including Aglianico, Albarino, Charbono, Grenache Blanc and Chenin

Blanc. Several of the Portuguese varieties have been planted as well

and will be used in the wineries solera Port program. The family of

wines will continue to grow with several of the varietals producing

fruit for the first time this vintage.

With a belief that all things in life are better when shared, when

the winery was built three years ago, a 5,000-square-foot tasting room

complete with kitchen and event facilities was also constructed. Ideal

for weddings, concerts and parties, the facility offers both indoor and

outdoor venues with spectacular views. The tasting room is open

daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and visitors are welcome to enjoy the

picnic areas. Sipping a glass of wine while relaxing on the swingoverlooking the vineyards is a perfect way to see why Tom worked so

hard to make his dream come true.

Owning and operating a vineyard and winery is a lot of hard

work. Kathleen laughs when she tells the story. I think back to

when Tom first told me his plan to not only have the vineyards but

to also build a winery. I clearly remember him saying Dont worry,

you wont have to do a thing. The couple has been hands-on in

every aspect of the business and, needless to say, Kathleen enjoys

reminding Tom of his promise. Although it is very different from

their earlier careers, the skill sets they brought with them to the

venture aided them in their success. Kathleen owned an insurance

agency prior to the winery and her skills came in handy to help deal

with the mounts of paperwork, compliance and business

management issues. Toms construction background enabled them to

design and build the winery and tasting room with greater ease than

most people tackling a project of that size.

Tom is indeed living his dream. I love to work outdoors and can

enjoy the pretty views with the surround countryside from my winery

and home. I always find something new to build and manage to have a

lot of fun. Some days I will spend the entire day out in the vineyards

on one of the tractors. His current project is a new outdoor kitchen

complete with pizza burning oven and Santa Maria-style BBQ.

    By lisa PreTTy

Developing a consistent, distinctive wine style takes many years.

In 2001, when Robert Hall was first introduced to Don Brady by a

mutual acquaintance, the two men walked the vineyards to discuss

their vision of what the new winery being built on Mill Road, just off

of Highway 46 East, could produce. Robert hired Don Brady as

winemaker on the spot with the comfort of knowing that they shared

a vision of working with a focus on the vineyards to develop the best

    wine possible.

Don Brady has been perfecting the portfolio at Robert Hall Winery

for the past twelve years to create a product mix that reflects the best

of Paso Robles. At the heart of the portfolio is the Cabernet

Sauvignon accounting for over 40% of the winerys production.

While other Bordeaux varietals and blends can be found in the mi

is the Rhone blends that take second place in importance. The esta

vineyards have over a dozen different Rhone varietals and clones

planted. These can be found blended in wines released at price po

    for every day drinking.

Working with fruit from the same vineyards has enabled Brady

develop a consistent house style that is elegant, food friendly,

balanced and age worthy. It takes time to really understand a

vineyard and what it can produce. With twelve years sourcing from

our estate vineyards and vineyards where we have had long term

partnerships, I have been able to learn what each vineyard block w

deliver and know how to finesse that into something special in the

winery. As a winemaker, my top priority is high quality fruit and a

result I spend a great amount of my time in the vineyards.

The focus on vertical integration from vineyard to bottle, whilecontinually perfecting both vineyard and winery techniques, has p

off. What was essentially an unknown brand in 2001, is now a

healthy, well received one in national distribution with a case

production in excess of 60,000 cases. Core wines such as Caberne

Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah can be found in retail outlets a

chains such as Trader Joes, while specialty wines such as Orange

Muscat and Vintage Port made from estate grown Portuguese

varietals are also in national distribution. A few of the limited

production wines such as Grenache Blanc and in some vintages

Cabernet Franc and Grenache can only be found in the tasting roo

The wines have received top honors in competitions including the

2010 Golden State Winery award for highest metals at the CalifornState Fair.

Stop by the hospitality center located at 3443 Mill Road in Paso

CHATEAU MARGENETwo Pristine LocationsBy saraH Doyle

Handcrafted wines, rich in character and varietalexpression is what youll find at Chateau Margene, a

winery founded by Michael and Margene Mooney in 19

Back then, it was a passion for high quality Cabernet

Sauvignon that inspired the couple to purchase 22 acres

land in Creston, Calif, (southeast of Paso Robles,) which

offers ideal growing conditions for Bordeaux varietals.

Today, Michael Mooneys commitment to producing

small lots of superior wine couldnt be more evident tha

in his Beau Melange, Chateau Margenes flagship

Bordeaux-style blend. Made exclusively with estate-grow

fruit, this highly coveted convergence of Cabernet

Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc is made in verylimited quantities (three to four barrels per year) and age

30-36 months in 100% French oak. In addition to the

grapes sourced from their own six planted acres, the

winery also utilizes fruit from seven additional growers i

the Paso Robles AVA for their Bordeaux, Rhone and Sup

Tuscan style blends and two growers in the Santa Lucia

Highlands AVA, in Monterey County, for their Pinot Noi

In 2006, the Mooney Family wine label was launched

This label, done in conjunction with their sons Chris &

Jon, offers an exceptional array of Rhne varietal wines,

such as Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Grenache Blanas well as a Petite Sirah and avibrant, fruit forward Pinot

    Noir.

Both Chateau Margene and Mooney Family Wines ca

be sampled at their two tasting rooms: one located at the

Estate Vineyard and Winery in Creston, and the other

conveniently found on the corner of Peachy Canyon Ro

and Vineyard Drive on the west side of Paso Robles. For

truly memorable tasting experience, wine enthusiasts ca

schedule a winery tour and barrel tasting with winemak

Michael at the Creston location (reservations required).

The west side tasting room is beautiful all year-round

During the warmer months, guests can enjoy a picnic onthe patio, or soak in the sun by the picturesque pond.

Cooler weather is a great excuse to cozy up to the indoo

fireplace with a glass of stellar Cabernet Sauvignon and

good company. Those seeking dessert wines will be

thrilled to discover that Chateau Margene now shares its

tasting room with Roxo Port Cellars, producers of high

quality port style wines. In addition, visitors to Chateau

Margenes west side tasting room can also purchase

NINER WINE ESTATESBy BreTTe aNN WomaCk

Niner Wine Estates is represented by a striking, cant-miss, property

Highway 46 West. The stone barn building is home to the Niner WineEstates Hospitality Center. An avid traveler and gardener, owner Pam N

came across a photograph of a similar structure located in the English

country-side. This photograph was then used as the inspiration for Nin

    Wine Estates.

Co-owner, Dick Niner, began his journey to the wine industry many

years prior. In 1996, while in San Luis Obispo for business, Dick came

realize the potential of Paso Robles as a viticultural investment. In 1999

Dick and his wife Pam decided to purchase Bootjack Ranch, a premium

vineyard that was planted to 54 acres of wine grapes. Since then, Dick

his vineyard manager, Jason Yeager, have expanded the ranch to 155

planted acres which includes Bordeaux and Italian varieties such as

Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere, Malbec, PetVerdot and Sangiovese. In 2007, the Niners planted 18 acres of Grenac

Blanc, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 2010, an additional 26 acres of Rhne varieties were planted,

including Marsanne, Mourvedre and Roussanne. These varieties of win

grapes are used in making Niner Wine Estates wines. Winemaker Ama

Cramer artfully crafts Bordeaux, Italian and Rhne style wines from the

estate properties in a LEED certified, gravity-flow winery. The winemak

processes are performed to produce the highest quality wine possible w

utilizing sustainable practices. The Production Winery is located on

Anderson Road, just one mile from the Hospitality Center. However, at

Hospitality Center, guests are invited to tour the Demonstration Winery

which represents the best practices used in the Production Winery. Amproduces several varietal-specific wines including a crisp and refreshing

Sauvignon Blanc and the popular food-friendly Sangiovese. Gaining

popularity are Niner Wine Estates blends, which include the unique re

Twisted Spur and the elegant Bordeaux-style wine, Fog Catcher. A selec

of five Niner Wine Estates wines can be sampled daily at the Hospitality

Center for $10 which can be waived with wine purchases.

In addition to daily wine tasting and occasional tours of the

Demonstration Winery, the Hospitality Center is also a venue for severa

food and wine events throughout the year. A state-of-the-art, commerci

grade kitchen welcomes local chefs who teach students how to prepare

then serve gourmet meals, all perfectly paired with Niner Wine Estates

wines. Chef-taught cooking classes are offered year-round. One upcomclass will be taught by Chef Charlie Paladin Wayne on June 17th. He w

teach students how to utilize The Whole Lamb. Chef Andre Averseng

host an Italian Inspired cooking class on July 7th. To learn more abou

Spanish Tapas, join Niner Wine Estates as they host Chef Tom Fundaro

July 21st. In addition to these chef-taught cooking classes, Niner Wine

Estates offers several wine education seminars and seasonal promotions

throughout the year, like the recent Bike to Niner earth month promo

where guests who bike to Niner Wine Estates receive complimentary

    HALTER RANCH VINEYARDBy miCHael CerviN

Halter Ranch is hands-down a gorgeous property, one of the prettiest in the area, and has

history dating back to the original ranch in 1881. Yet, even before that, the Chumash Indians

called this land home. This was a gathering spot for Native Americans with year-round springs

says Seth Engel, tasting room manager. So there is a sense of people gathering here for hundred

of years. Nowadays they gather at the Halter Ranch tasting room to sample some of the premierwines in Paso Robles.

Inside the tasting room you will find gift items fresh bread, honey from bees on the property

and a deli selection for you to enjoy a picnic. Cheese is one of my fortes so Ive stepped up the

cheese selection, Seth notes. All the materials used to build the tasting room are sustainable; fr

the cork floors to the concrete counter top to the eco-friendly paint. But youre here for the win

and Halter Ranch specializes in estate wines including Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah as well as

19 other varieties planted on 280 acres. You will also find Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and a Po

style desert wine. We are the largest contiguous planting of grapes on the Westside of Paso Rob

and we have unique micro-climates, Seth adds. Many vineyards have one specific hillside,

orientation or soil type, but Halter Ranch has it all. We have multiple hillsides facing north an

south, soils with calcareous and volcanic types and little niches which allow us to grow that ma

grapes. There are gift items as well and a relaxed environment.

Outside the tasting room, and especially at this time of year, the green hills and mature oak

trees make stunning scenery. Also outside there is a stone patio to kickback on and soak up the

Paso Robles vibe. On the 1,000 acres of the ranch there is the Ancestor oak tree, the largest kno

coastal live-oak in the world. Halter Ranch does occasional tours called Farming with the Wild

which takes you on an overview of the ranch including the Ancestor, and the tours have food a

WINE COUNTRY NEWS | WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

    JOSH BECKETTBy CarolyN TUrNer

Josh Beckett received his first taste of the wine industry at a young age whenparents, Doug and Nancy Beckett decided to move with him and his brother Jak

the Westside of Paso Robles in 1982. In 1988 the Beckett family launched their f

wine, only 250 cases of a Zinfandel, which later became Peachy Canyons flagship

    wine.

Josh began by washing wine barrels and punching down bins in the family

winery, and during Junior High and High school he worked at Tobin James Cella

and Nadeau Family Vineyards. Although he left for a few years to complete a B.A

English from the University of San Diego, he was quick to return and began by

working harvest at Westberg Cellars then continued his winemaking tutelage und

winemaker Florence Sarrazin from Bordeaux, who served as Peachy Canyons

winemaker for four years. When she decided to return to Bordeaux in 2002, Josh

was ready to take over as winemaker for the family business.

Growing up in the wine industry, I think I gained more appreciation after

coming back to it after school, said Josh.

In order to diversify his winemaking techniques, Josh decided to work a harv

at Cape Mentelle in Margaret River. His passion for combining varied regions and

winemaking techniques allows him to keep an open mind in order to create truly

exciting wines while simultaneously staying true to his commitment of creating h

    quality wines.

Im proud of taking our annual case production from 15,000 to 85,000 cases

while maintaining the quality and integrity of the wine, said Josh. This increase i

production allowed the Beckett family to distribute Peachy Canyon wines in 49

states as well as internationally. Were not looking to grow any more than that [85,000 cases], said Josh. We

want to continue to focus on putting our money toward quality fruit.

This focus led to a recent Sustainability In Practice (SIP) Vineyard Certification

2010 for all four of Peachy Canyons Estate Vineyards, a commitment that has alw

been important to the Beckett family. SIP recognizes growers for their commitme

to farming in a sustainable way that protects both natural and human resources.

We like to practice limited vineyard management, meaning that we take a ha

off and more natural approach to farming, said Josh, who also enjoys working w

fruit from several other vineyards in Paso Robles.

Although Peachy Canyon is known for its Estate Zinfandels, Josh enjoys creat

Viogniers, Cabernets, Merlots and unique blends the exhibit distinct terroir andvarietal characteristics.

Im proud that over the years, Ive stayed true to Peachy Canyons roots, inste

of always chasing the next hot thing, said Josh. Years ago I a writer from Wine

Spectator told me that we should drop the Zin and go for Syrah, but if we had do

that, we wouldnt be where we are today.

Visitors to Peachy Canyons Old Schoolhouse tasting room will often have the

chance to meet Josh during pick up parties and special events, as well as out pou

and talking about the wines at festivals. He also contributes regularly to Peachy

Canyons blog, www.tastespeachy.com, sharing his insight on vineyard managem

    and winemaking.

One pretty reliable way tofind out just how good the foodat a local restaurant is, is to asksomebody in the restaurantbusiness. Ask a bartender, awaiter, anyone in fact, what theythink of Mamas meatballs inSan Luis Obispo and their lipsbegin to quiver, their eyes rolltowards the heavens, they sigh;that is how good Mamas Meat-ball is.

Set in a small courtyard off of

one of the towns main streets, in a place calledthe Old Creamery, Mamas Meatball is actuallydivided in two. On the right is the take-outwhere people line up to get their orders ofmeatballs and more. To the left, fronted by ahuge-trunked tree and a water fountain, is theintimate restaurant with its mural of theMediterranean across the back.

    Meatballs aside, the restaurant, under

owner and chef Nicola Allegretta, offers a wide range ofauthentic Italian dishes, many of them now available in smallesizes as well, a bow to the economy and his customers wishesAmong them are half a dozen soups, a long list of salads(including grilled salmon and a refreshing pear and gorgonzolsome wonderful antipasto choices, both hot and cold paninis(including, of course, one made with meatballs), more pastadishes than there is space here to share (though the Ravioli diPollo all Vodka homemade ravioli filled with chicken andserved in a vodka sauce cannot go unmentioned).

There is also a heady selection of meat and fish dishes as well any number of traditional and specialty pizzas (now available intwo sizes) and some far too-tempting desserts.

Every winery wants to stand out from the competition. For SortThis Out Cellars, even the name tells you this is going to be a

different experience. In an attempt to avoid the corporate

homogenization of consumer culture, as owner and winemaker

Michael Cobb puts it, he has created a unique and expressive

wine tasting room in Solvang. And, the wines here are different

too, including their Elvira line of wines. Yes Elvira, Mistress of the

Dark, has her very own Macabrenet, a full-bodied, blood-red

Cabernet Sauvignon sporting Elvira in a seductive pose in front of

a spider web. Sort This Out Cellars is handcrafting and distrib-

uting a full line of California-based wines for Elvira beginning

with a 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. But its not mere gimmickry.

Elvira works closely with Cobb and is involved with all aspects ofthe winemaking process, including the selection of the grapes,

blending decisions, art direction and even marketing. The only

thing Im not doing is stomping the grapes, Elvira says.

Currently, the wine is available through our website and

tasting room and a few retailers in Ojai and Los Angeles, Cobb

says. In addition to the wine we also just rolled out a line of

vintage soda pop for her. Weve been doing the soda ourselves for

about a year now with World War II era pin up girls on them.

And the Elvira soda names reflect a sense of play with labels like,

Lemon sLime and Silent sCream Soda.

The recently released Casino Vineyard Rhne is a blendfeaturing artwork by Fullerton, California tattoo artist Robert

Adams. Its a tongue-in-cheek take on our lack of vineyard type

labels and the fact that we love Las Vegas, Cobb says. He has

also released Vino Nostra, a tip of the hat to the Prohibition-era

with wine that reminds us that government restrictions are stil

real issue. For more than thirteen years the wine industry waseffectively shut down by Prohibition. We honor the spirit of th

underground vintners who carried forward the tradition of Am

ican winemaking during the darkest hours of Prohibition, Cob

    writes on his blog.

Clearly there is a diversity of wine to be had at Sort This Ou

from Merlot to Syrah to Viognier and Chardonnay, nothing is o

limits. And the concept is also different in that Cobb does not

own any vineyards. I tried to take all that I felt was wrong wit

wineries and turn that around, he says. And clearly he has hit

    something.

There is an enduring allure with wines and wineries that cel

brate a specific sense of time in our collective history. Sort ThisOut has created an homage to Las Vegas, a pin-up 1950s era

sensibility. This is clearly evidenced in the tasting room, all

decked out in chrome and red leather, a fun, funky and hip pl

to be. Our tasting room is definitely different than anything el

in Solvang, Cobb says. They are also the latest tasting room op

in town. Friday and Saturday nights they offer live music whic

gives both locals and tourists something to do when sleepy

Solvang rolls up the streets at dark. Our vibe is different, our

hours are different, our outlook on wine tasting differs, and we

just want people to have fun with the wine tasting experience,

Cobb says.Sort This Out Cellars is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday

through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday

Tasting fees are $5 to $15. Contact them at (805) 688-1717 or

    Founded in 2005, Evening Land

Vineyards is an ambitious andunique project dedicated to making

    world-class Pinot Noir and

Chardonnay from the finest sites in

    California, Oregon and France.

    Inspired by Burgundian tradition,

    Evening Lands journey began with

    the idea of capturing American

terroir. Terroir, a French word that

roughly translates to earth or soil,

refers to the specificity of place as a

    fundamental and defining influence

on a finished wine. The concept ofterroir became a mission for Evening Land as they acquired a

compelling collection of acclaimed vineyard sites such as the

Occidental Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast, the Tempest Vineyard in

the Santa Rita Hills and the Seven Springs Vineyard in the Willamette

Valley. In 2008, Evening Lands project came full circle when the

company was presented with the opportunity to begin producing

    wines in Burgundys Cte DOr.

Having access to vineyard sites in four different regions gives

Evening Land the rare opportunity to explore the sensitivity of Pinot

Noir and Chardonnay as it thrives in the red volcanic dirt of Oregon,

the fog wrapped ridges of Sonoma, the windswept mountains ofdecomposed sea shells of the Santa Rita Hills, and the clay and

limestone soils of Burgundy. Soil and climate diversity make their

mark on Evening Land wines, creating delicately balanced and site-

driven wines. With more than 120 acres of organically and

biodynamically farmed vineyards, Evening Land produces estate

wines imbued with unique spirit of place.

Come visit our tasting room at 1503 East Chestnut Avenue in the

Lompoc Wine Ghetto to experience, compare, and enjoy the terroir

of the Santa Rita Hills, the Sonoma Coast, the Willamette Valley, and

the Cote DOr. Open Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    or by appointment.
