WINE COUNTRY NEWS | WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

by Kim Murphy-Rodrigues

Discover the Essence of Paso Robles, with a visit to Robert Hall

Winery. Tucked in the rolling terrain near the eastern gateway to Paso

Robles, Robert Hall Winery is celebrating their “10 Year Anniversary”

in 2011. Founder Robert L. Hall has realized a life-long dream in

building the winery and hospitality center which has become a land-

mark for the Paso Robles community.

Robert’s interest in the wine business was sparked during a family

vacation to France in the late ’70s. As he traveled throughout the

Rhône Valley, Robert was captivated by the tradition and lifestyle of

the family wine estates he visited. Shortly after, Robert began devel-oping his idea for a premium-producing vineyard and winery and

ventured west with the goal of visiting each of California’s wine appel-

lations to explore optimum growing conditions for

the production of premium wine grapes, specifi-

cally the Rhône varieties he enjoyed so much. In

the early ’90s, Robert and Margaret discovered the

perfect terroir in the Paso Robles AVA. Featuring

soil rich in nutrients, coupled with warm days and

cool nights, Robert felt the viticultural conditions

were ideal to the development of the enological

characteristics he was seeking to produce. “Home

Ranch” was acquired in 1995. Soon after, the

“Terrace” and “Bench” vineyards joined the Hall

Ranch.

Dedicated to environmental sustainability,

Robert Hall Winery has achieved Sustainability in

Practice (SIP)™ Certification for its vineyards, with

each bottle of wine bearing the SIP™ seal. As true

stewards of the land, both the winery and viney

practice natural resource conservation. Measu

include the preservation of native oak trees on

Hall Ranch, energy and water conservation thro

the recycling and treatment of waste water for

vineyard and landscape irrigation, use of a natu

pumice, diatomaceous earth and organic comptea in the vineyard as well as cover crops, benefi

insects and permaculture gardens.

The winery was named California’s “Golden S

Winery” for 2010 by the California State Fair W

Competition. Known as the oldest and most pre

giously judged wine competition in North Amer

this year’s event included nearly 3,000 wines fr

over 600 wineries, which were all blind tas

Robert Hall Winery’s ten wine entries garnered five “Best of Cla

honors and placed the winery in the position of being this ye

golden recipient – a first time honor for a Central Coast winery. Rob

L. Hall is “proud of this achievement and the attention it brings to

wines and wineries in Paso Robles.” All Robert Hall wines are craf

by winemaker Don Brady who joined Robert Hall Winery in 2001

Texas native, Don was recognized by his industry peers in 2006

receiving the “Winemaker of the Year” honors. Don’s goal in craft

Robert Hall wines is “to bring the elements of the fruit from the H

Ranch to the winey to capture the exceptional color and flavor tha

the essence of Paso Robles.” While Robert Hall Winery is most kno

for their Cabernet Sauvignon, the winery has an extensive Rhône-w

portfolio including Viognier, Blanc de Robles, Grenache Blanc, Rh

de Robles, Pape de Robles, Syrah and a Petite Sirah.

Summerland Winery is a boutique wine

company that takes pride in producing a diverse

range of premium wines focusing on the expres-

sive vineyard sources spanning from Santa

Barbara to Monterey with an emphasis on small

lot, vineyard designated Pinot Noir production.

Inspired by the relaxed, friendly lifestyle enjoyed

throughout California’s serene coastal towns,

Proprietor, Mr. Nebil “Bilo” Zarif opened his

tasting room in the charming town of Summer-

land. Here at the Summerland Winery Boutique,

visitors are invited to taste Summerland’s award-

winning varietal wines in a comfortable seaside

setting overlooking the town and Pacific Ocean.

Since its conception in 2002, Summerland

Winery has quickly built a name synonymous

with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The Wines

Mr. Zarif, a longtime fixture in the Central Coast wine industry,

founded Summerland Winery with the intention of producing a

diverse range of Central Coast wines. The current portfolio of white

wines includes Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Chardonnay,

Orange Muscat, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Grenache,

Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon offered in two distinctive tiers. A

portfolio of the reds of the Central Coast Collection are blended in a

more fruit forward style, excellent for food pairing. They best reflect

the category of everyday enjoyment and offer good varietal character

with a regional flavor profile.

The Summerland reserve tier is dedicated to single-vineyard

bottlings from top vineyards in the region. T

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK: CENTRAL COAS

Vineyards First

It all starts here in the vineyard. At Summerland Winery, they

put in a lot of miles traveling the region, tasting and meeting with

growers before a vineyard site is selected for the Single Vineyard

Collection. They recognize that careful vineyard selection and

coordination with the vineyard managers throughout the growing

season plays a key role in achieving the kind of structure and

finesse in the wines they are making.Numerous visits are conducted throughout the harvest by

Summerland Winemaker, Etienne Terlinden who will make the

final call as to when to pick the grapes for optimal ripeness and

flavor. While Bien Nacido serves as the core vineyard source for

Summerland’s Chardonnay and Pinot Noir programs, additional

Pinot Noir sources include the Fiddlestix and Rancho Santa Rosa

Vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills appellation, Chamisal Vineyard

and Odyssey-Thurlestone Vineyards in Edna Valley and Solomon

Hills Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley.

Winemaking

Summerland production takes place in the Santa Maria facilitynear the Bien Nacido Vineyard. The location is ideal since they

contract fruit from several vineyard sources throughout the region.

Winemaker, Etienne Terlinden describes his approach as a

meeting of old world tradition and new world principles. The fruit

is processed using state-of-the-art equipment ideal for Pinot Noir

production yet vinification and cellaring is conducted with

minimal intervention and traditional winemaking in mind. Red

wine grapes pass through sorting tables then on to the destemer,

which gently removes the stems from the clusters. The juice and

berries fall into 1.5-ton wood fermenters for a slow maceration

process averaging 10 to 14 days depending on the varietal and

clone. The grapes are then pressed using a bladder press and thejuice is gently removed from the skins. From here the wine will be

aged in small French Oak casks until bottling.

Our commitment to small-lot production is evident in the wines

that comprise the Single Vineyard Collection. Here the wines are

hand-crafted every step of the way in quantities ranging from as

little as 125 cases to 800 cases.

Blending is conducted with the expertise of world-renowned

consultant, Michele Pignarre le Danois. Michele, who resides in

Bordeaux, visits the region periodically to taste and sew together

the final blends with Etienne and his staff. This is the crucial step

where all the components that go into a single vineyard bottling

are evaluated, analyzed and pieced together to make wines thatwill bear the distinction of the celebrated Single Vineyard Collec-

tion. An individual bottling of Pinot Noir may have up to as many

as six clonal varieties that Etienne has carefully vinified separately

in the cellar. Barrels that are not selected for single vineyard

programs will be blended into the Central Coast Collection. This

keeps the single vineyard wines focused on the terroir and flavor

profile of the individual vineyard site while maintaining high wine

quality in both programs. The finished wines are bottled with

minimal fining to preserve the fruit intensity and released in

limited quantities.

Perched on an oak studded hilltop in the

Templeton Gap, Hearthstone’s rustic tasting

room provides a relaxed, casual atmosphere

for wine tasting. The tasting room staff isextremely knowledgeable and happy to

answer any questions about the estate vine-

yards, the winemaking process and the wines

offered for tasting. “We believe tasters appre-

ciate a little wine education during their visit

so all of our staff is trained to answer ques-

tions. We even added an educational blog to

our website for those who are not able to visit

us in person,” commented tasting room

manager Josslyn Wagster.

All of the wines produced by Hearthstone’s

winemaker, Paul Ayers, are made from grapessourced from the 40-acre estate vineyard.

Owner Hoy Buell, a Cal Poly graduate and

horticulturist for 28 years, planted the vine-

yard with a large number of different varietals

in small blocks. Each year approximately 15

different wines are released with several

limited productions. Every now and then

Paul will find a barrel of wine too good to

blend and will bottle it standalone with just

25 cases available. The majority of the line-up

is what the winery is known for – creative

blends. Tasters can select Bordeaux blends,

Rhône blends and even a Super Tuscan

named Profundo. The 2007 Profundo is 53%

Sangiovese, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15%

Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot. Profundowon a gold medal in this year’s San Francisco

Chronicle competition and is a current

favorite in the tasting room.

Just outside the tasting room visitors are

welcome to enjoy a comfortably furnished

patio surrounded by large oak trees and stun-

ning views. Every Friday until October 28th,

from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., the patio is the place to

be for the Weekly Wine Down. For just $10

guests are offered wine tasting, BBQ appetizers

and live music. Most Fridays a local artist

be featured and Paul will be person

manning the BBQ. On June 10th Lin

Tomasic, acoustic guitarist and songwr

will be helping everyone wine down with

assortment of her original songs. For visikicking off their wine weekend or locals

ending their work week, it is the perfect w

to spend a relaxing evening and chat with

staff and other guests. With the new park

there is plenty of space and easy access.

Be sure to ask about the Hearthstone w

club when you visit. Club members rece

wine shipments twice a year and may selec

receive three, six or 12 bottles in each sh

ment. The more wine selected the greater

discounts. Each shipment will also incltechnical information, winemaker notes

recipes to pair with each wine. There a

number of other perks such as complimen

tasting for members and up to three gu

and priority invitations to winery events.

The tasting room, located at 5070 Vi

Now in it’s eighth year, the California Wine

Festival’s three days of wine events are scheduled

for July 14-16, in picturesque Santa Barbara. “We’re

expecting another great festival this year, Director

Don Fritzen said. “Our new Orange County Cali-

fornia Wine Festival sold out last year and we

expect the same here in our original home base

where we’ve always enjoyed tremendous support.”

Organizers are expecting a wide variety of

wineries from every wine region in California to

pour at the prestigious three days of events, plus

regional microbreweries, some imported wine and

even vodka and tequila tasting exhibitors. “We’re

also working hard to attract the best local and

regional restaurants and gourmet food purveyors

from around the country”, Fritzen said. Of course,

live musical entertainment has been lined up at all

three events to provide an exciting sound track to

this outdoor extravaganza.

Emily Kaufmann, the growing company’s new

Vice President of Festival Operations agrees with

Fritzen’s vision of a bright future, “We’re beginning

to attract some national sponsorships along with

more significant wineries and gourmet food

purveyors. Our brand has stood the test of time,

and we’ve always maintained the highest standard

of wine, food and fun entertainment, giving our

guests more for their dollar.

Elite wineries, gourmet food manufacturers, toprestaurants, and especially event sponsors recognize

the value they receive from marketing to CWF’s

high profile clientele in an environment of presti-

gious wines, foods and lots of sun and fun.” Kauf-

mann concluded “Tickets are going on sale sooner

than ever before this year as demand seems to

continue to rise for California Wine Festival’s blend

of quality wines and gourmet foods, presented in a

one-of-a-kind California setting. “Better buy early

and take advantage of our early bird prices, as we

expect to sell out again, Kaufmann warned!”

California and Spanish wineries will showcase their

world-class wines accompanied by a spicy array of

appetizers from top local restaurants. Colorful

be conducted by an expert from the world famous

Riedel Glassware Company, preeminent wine glass-

ware manufacturer. Each attendee will receive their

own set (to take home) of four varietal specific wine

glasses (valued at $123) for the seminar/tasting.

Within the rolling hills and temperate

maritime climate of the Edna Valley appella-

tion, a beautiful tasting room and quality

wines can often be mutually exclusive. Anexception is Talley Vineyards. 2011 marks the

25th anniversary of Talley Vineyards and it is

no wonder this local family has been

attracting guests to their property for a

quarter of a century. After making the turn off

of Lopez Drive, wildflowers and farmland

accompany the views of the estate vineyard.

A charming courtyard surrounds the entrance

to the tasting room. Plenty of seating is avail-

able for guests to enjoy their wine tasting

outside and take advantage of the mildArroyo Grande valley weather which has an

average of 70 degrees year round.

Open the large wooden doors to the

tasting room and immediately take in the

expansive views, most notably including the

famed Rincon Vineyard. Once the sights of

the gorgeous property have been successfully

examined, peruse the bountiful gift items

beautifully displayed around the unrestricted

and welcoming space. The tasting room is

open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

during which guests can choose their flight of

five wines from either a regular menu ($6) or

a distinctive menu ($12). Enjoy both the

Talley Estate and Bishop’s Peak wines. For those looking for a unique and educa-

tional experience, Talley’s Guest Services

Coordinator, Andy McDaniel, offers an

expansive array of Guest Services for wine

novices and wine aficionados alike. The

Estate Tour and Tasting, $35 per person,

takes you on a one and a half hour journey

encompassing all that is “Rincon”. Learn

about the vineyard, winery and wines from

the word that has become synonymic with

quality and elegance from Talley’s es

wines. To taste Talley’s most exclusive of

ings and vintages, opt for the Special Rese

and Library Tasting, $25 per pers

intended to expand the guests wine kno

edge. A casual tour and tasting is offered

only $15 per person and non tasters can

In the heart of the Edna Valley, the Jack

Niven Hospitality Center offers what is

arguably the finest view in San Luis Obispo.

From this beautiful location, artfully crafted

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and other varietals are

served. Much of the wine is made from

Paragon Vineyards which surrounds the prop-

erty. Inside, thoughtfully selected vinicultural

gift and gourmet food items fill the great room.

After the first sip of wine, spending an after-

noon perusing the Hospitality Center is

inevitable.

Conveniently located just off of Highway

227, the scenery bordering the HospitalityCenter is accented by roses and pepper trees.

A demonstration vineyard, which allows guests to learn about the vari-

etals grown in the Edna Valley, is surrounded by ample parking. A

bountiful garden and the sweet smell of jasmine act as a guide to the

tall glass entry doors. Upon entering, the jaw dropping view – show-

casing Islay Peak, the Seven Sisters and Paragon Vineyard – draws

guests to the wine tasting bar. The tasting menu boasts a wide selec-

tion of wines including reserves, such as the Paragon Vineyard

Chardonnay, which are available only through the Hospitality Center.

While mostly known for Edna Valley Pinot Noir with regards to the

reds, the Petite Syrah from Paso Robles is

exciting and delicious addition to the flight.

In ink on my calendar, is June 2-5 when Pismo Beach hosts Wine,

Waves & Beyond to benefit AmpSurf, a non-profit organization

founded by Iraq Veteran Dana Cummings (http://www.ampsurf.org). At this event, Central California’s Wine Country meets the breath-

taking Central Coast. Some of the best Wineries, Breweries and Culi-

choices in Pismo and Shell Beach from which to choose. If you wish,

you can park your car and never return to it until you are ready to go

home which is how I prefer to spend many of my weekends getaways.

Business owner and restaurant affi-

cianado Jim Spallino, together with AlfonsoCurti, former executive chef of Grappolo inSanta Ynez, have a winning combinationfor Orcutt’s next big thing: a local Italiantrattoria. Both Spallino and Curti havedreamed of having a restaurant of their ownand when the opportunity to take on theWine Cottage Bistro presented itself, theyjumped! Curti, a native Calabrian, movedto California from Italy a little more thanten years ago and made a name for himself

working at his family’s restaurant in Santa

Ynez during that time. His culinary careerbegan as a young teenager where heworked in a family bakery and later heserved in the Italian Army as a chef fortroops. Perhaps his greatest teachers werehis Nonna and Mamma where he learnedthe heart of Italian cooking.

When Spallino frequented the familyrestaurant in Santa Ynez, right away hezeroed in on the heart of the place: Chef Curti – and planted the seed for Alfonso todream of having his own trattoria.

Trattoria Uliveto is a gathering place forfamilies, friends, business associates, localsand tourists with a passion for quality foodand fine wine. You will be transported to asmall trattoria in the heart of Italy whenyou meet the staff, taste the food and soakin the atmosphere. Favorite offerings startwith the Grissini: homemade breadsticks, wrapped in prosciutto and soaked in butterand sage, then a salad of arugula, parme-sean, lemon and extra virgin olive oil. For

the main course one might try a pasta of penne, sausage and mushrooms in a tomcream sauce or a pizza from a wood-burning pizza oven. Meat lovers will nobe disappointed with a bistecca of the daprepared to your liking or perhaps thebreaded pork chop with arugula, tomatoand extra virgin olive oil. Lastly, your swtooth will be satiated with a rich chocolamousse or perhaps Alfonso’s “Torta dellaNonna.” Come experience a quick escapto the Mediterranean and enjoy fine locafare at Trattoria Uliveto. Hop On/Hop Off Shuttle Service Opens In Santa Barbara & Santa Ynez Valley  A new wine tasting transportation service is being launched to

serve Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley. Unlike other wine

touring options, The Wine Line will allow tasters to hop on and hop

off of their shuttles like a city bus, choose the wineries they want tovisit and stay as long as they like. The door-to-door service offers an

excellent way to safely taste wines without a designated driver and to

pick your pace of tasting.

Owner/Operator Jason Westfall launched The Wine Line in April.

After a frustrating wine tasting trip with friends, Jason Westfall desired

a better solution to organized wine tasting and the risk of drinking and

driving. Private cars were expensive and large groups with guides were

unappealing to them. They didn’t want to be held to a schedule or told

how or what to taste. They wanted freedom of choice at a reasonable

price and a safer mode of transportation. He envisioned a shuttle that

you could jump on and off as you wish at numerous wineries. “Themost important part of the service is we give people a safe and flexible

alternative to drinking and driving” says Jason. After successfully

running the same service in Paso Robles for the past two years, he

knew it was time to expand.

The service will initially operate on a circular route that runs from

Los Olivos up through Foxen Canyon. The Wine Line has partnered

with over 30 premier wineries as destination points. The two vehicles

will stop at each winery approximately every 40 minutes. The service

operates like a modified city bus with specific stops throughout

day. Customers can just pick and choose from the wineries servi

where they’d like to “hop off” all day long. Standard operating days

Thursday through Sunday (10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). The shuttles

pick up clients at their hotel or residence and safely deliver them bwhen they so desire. The cost for all day service is $79.95 per pers

but military, get a $10 discount off the regular price.

The two shuttles operate from their home base in Solvang. T

modern Dodge Sprinter van runs on environmentally frien

biodiesel. “We wanted to make as little impact on the environmen

possible,” said Westfall, “and we figured that people would feel be

about their choice of transportation if we were green.”

ABOUT

The Wine Line is the best choice for safe and fun wine tasting

touring in the Paso Robles and Santa Barbara wine countries. It

“hop on, hop off” shuttle service that provides flexibility in w

tasting. Modern vans travel a circular route and stop at designa

wineries every 40 minutes. Wine Line seven days a week from 10

a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Special arrangements can be made for Mon

through Wednesday tours for groups of eight or more. More infor

begin the tasting the line-up of the estate grown Bordeaux varietals

and blends.

The tasting room can be found in the hilltop winery with

wonderful views of both the golden hills of San Miguel and the estate

vineyards. While the majority of the vineyards still host the original

plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sauvi-

gnon Blanc, a few acres have been replanted to include Malbec.

Working with the estate fruit, it is the blends that really let Lisa exp

her wine style. Palette de Rouge is Pretty-Smith’s signature wine always contains a barrel select blend of the best the vintage has

offer. Three different vintages are currently available for tasting – e

one has a distinctive personality. The female touch can definitely

detected in the wine – the style is soft, smooth and silky with a lov

velvet texture. The reds are aged in French and Hungarian oak bar

for up to four years, then bottled aged for an additional year prio

release. This is an extraordinary boon to the wine drinker who d

not want to wait two or three years for a wine to begin to show

promise.

Throughout the vineyards and winery, the spirit of Kokopelli

be felt. Known as the God of Fertility who played his flute to make

sun rise and crops abundant, Kokopelli has provided inspiration

Lisa as she nurtures the vines and hand crafts the wines. His imag

often found on the wine labels, with each release featuring a uniq

series of “Pretty-glyphs”, oil paintings created by Lisa in the wine

art studio.

Tom Myers joined the Castoro team as

Head Winemaker in 1990. Twenty-one yearslater he is producing approximately 55,000

cases under the Castoro brand along with

owner Niels Udsen, assistant winemaker

Mikel Olsten and enologist Sherrie Holzer.

The winemaking team all share Niels’ vision

of creating “dam fine wines” at a price point

that consumers can enjoy daily.

“Our wines are easily accessible with

something for every palate. I like to empha-

size fruit characteristics true to the grape vari-

etal with just a hint of oak and

well…something you can call yummy,” saysTom. He is very proud of the high quality

wine that they are able to deliver at every day

drinking prices. “I want to produce the best

wines I possibly can, but in the end, I

wouldn’t feel good about making wines that

only a small percentage of the population can

afford. We produce honest wines that are an

honest value. Our wines allow people to

include quality wine in their daily lifestyle,

without breaking the bank. I love it when I

get a comment such as “your wine is as good

as wines I have paid much more much for””.

Tom’s ability to create technically correct

wines is in large part due to his interest inscience. He received his Bachelor of Science,

followed by his Masters of Science, in Biolog-

ical Science/Botany from Michigan State

University. His interest in winemaking

brought him west, to the University of Cali-

fornia at Davis, where he received his Masters

in Food Science with an Enology/Viticulture

focus. “The wide range of science that is

incorporated into winemaking – microbi-

ology, chemistry and physics – piqued my

interest from the beginning,” explains Myers. One of the things that Tom enjoys about

producing wines at Castoro is that he is given

a great deal of latitude in terms of wine style

and choices of grape. Castoro owns vineyards

scattered throughout both the eastside and

westside of Paso Robles; however, in addition

to using their estate grapes they source fruit

from approximately twenty other vineyards.

The wide selection of grapes gives Tom the

freedom to select the best fruit to create wines

that best represent the area.

The current list of wines available

Castoro includes over thirty different wi

with most offered at less than $20 per botTom is proud of all the wines at Castoro

his favorite tends to change. Right now hi

to wine is the 2007 Zinfusion – a blend

Zinfandel from several vineyards with a l

Petite Sirah. The big, bold fruit flavors m

this a popular wine for many people. Be s

to stop by the Castoro tasting room and f

your own favorite. With the selection

wines including Chardonnay, Roussan

Pinot Grigio, Viognier, Malbec, Tempran

Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, CaberFranc, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel

several blends you will be sure to find som

thing that suits your palate.

The tasting room is located at 1315

Bethel Road just off of Highway 46 Wes

was Palmina, and the winery was thus fittingly named.

“Even before making wine, we were captivated by Italy and

Italian lifestyle,” said Steve. “There, food and wine is part of a heal

happy way of life that brings people together. And so, unlike

movement called ‘Cal-Ital,’ we are not focusing on making wines

big California style. The wines are made in a delicate manner t

allows them to be paired with food. Our dedication to these wine

to handle them all separately without any ‘formula.’ Each of the n

different Italian varieties of grapes we work with requires our comp

attention to detail to ensure that the true nature of that grape sh

through.”

Most of the white wines are made in stainless steel with heighte

aromatics balance the natural acidity and minerality in these v

etals. The red wines range in style from an everyday drinking red w

like Dolcetto, which is made in a fresh style of neutral oak and sta

less steel and released in the summer within a year of harvestingNebbiolo which is a full-bodied wine full of tannins. As oppose

the early release of Dolcetto, Nebbiolo takes four years to produ

aging slowly in large upright and puncheon barrels while slo

gaining earthiness and roundness.

Stop by our enoteca and sample our latest releases as well as a

of cheese and some salami, and find out what’s happening her

Palmina. The tasting room is open Thursday through Saturday

a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday and Monday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Dragonette Cellars is a small, family-owned and operated winery in ev

sense of the word. The proprietors, John and Steve Dragonette and clfriend Brandon Sparks-Gillis formed Dragonette Cellars in order to pursulong-held dream to produce wines of the utmost quality and purity from finest vineyards in Santa Barbara County and the Central Coast. Wives, Mit

Jen & Michelle work with them in the vineyard, cellar and tasting room (are the inspiration for a special reserve Rhone-varietal blend called “MJM”)visit to Dragonette Cellars, therefore, means that you will meet the fambehind the label.

Of course it is what’s in the bottle that counts, and to that end, John, Stand Brandon are passionately committed to handcrafting exceptional winecomplexity, purity and balance with their own hands. Therefore they

personally involved in all wine-related operations and decisions, from viyard to barrel to bottle. Every bottle that leaves the cellar door is 10produced by their family members.

Dragonette Cellars’ story began at an excellent wine shop in Los Angewhere they had the opportunity to taste (and become inspired by) the benmark wines of the world. From there they obtained hands-on experiencsome of the finest wineries and viticulturists in the world. Armed with experience, they launched their own label, utilizing their vineyard contact

density, canopy management, irrigation, and yield control to produce the

highest quality fruit. In the cellar Brandon, John & Steve focus on allowing their carefully

selected fruit to evolve into wines of great complexity, purity and balance. To

that end, they harvest small lots from each vineyard block individually, withhand sorting in the vineyard, and then ferment and age the resulting winesseparately, carefully monitoring each barrel throughout its elevage. The finalblends are painstakingly created by blind tasting each barrel. Wines arebottled without fining or filtration in most cases.

Producing small lots of ultra premium Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc andSyrah-based, Rhone styled wines, Dragonette Cellars is rapidly gaining recog-nition as a winery to watch, garnering enthusiastic critical reviews fromStephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar, the Wine Enthusiast and

Wine Tasting in SOLVANGSort This Out Cellarsby Carolyn Turner

Sort This Out Cellars is certainly not your typical wine country

experience. As you walk through the doors of their Solvang tasting

room, you’ll immediately be transported from the quaint Danish

downtown, to the glitz and glam of Las Vegas! Yet as soon as you step

up to the bar and try these unique wines, you’ll know you’re still in

the heart of Santa Ynez wine country.

For owner and vintner Michael Cobb, the beginning of his journey

into the wine industry began while working for Disneyland as

manager and wine buyer for Disneyland’s famed Club 33. After several

years Michael eventually made the Santa Ynez Valley his home, and in

2007 he produced his first vintage of wines that were sold exclusively

online. After a short stint in Buellton, Cobb moved the tasting room to

its new home in Solvang.

Cobb knew that he wanted to create wines that moved away from

the iconic California landscape, and more accurately resembled the

people who drank them. The image of the winery was inspired by an

old picture of the Rat Pack outside The Sands hotel in 1961, and

evokes a time when men had character and women had curves.

“We built our wines around the classic American adult spirit, so

eroded by political correctness and fear, to create wines that were

unapologetic in their character,” said Cobb. “Wines that pair with

good times and good friends.”

With names like “Hardways” Cabernet Sauvignon, “Lady Luck”

Chardonnay, “Oh My Gosh” Grenache and “Even Money” Merlot, and

the “Suited Wines” graced by pinup beauties that would make the

great Gil Elvgren proud, these wines are one of a kind. There’s

certainly something for everyone too, with the addition of the new line

of vintage soda pop. Made with pure cane sugar, the label artwork

features World War 2 era style pinups.

Make sure to catch the live music by local musicians every Fri

and Saturday night from 6 to 10 p.m. Also the first Saturday of ev

month offers an evening of Hootenanny proportions with Nate L

and his Rockabilly Revue. No matter how you role the dice, you

sure to come up lucky at Sort This Out Cellars.
