    J. Lohr to be honored among leaders and legends of thewine and spirits world at the 11th Annual Wine Star Awards

    presented by Wine Enthusiast Magazine

    J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines has been named the 2010 American

Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine, in an announce-

ment released Monday. This award will be accepted by J. Lohr Vine-

yards & Wines President and Founder Jerry Lohr at the 11th Annual

Wine Star Awards gala, which will be held on January 24th at the New

York City Public Library. In receiving this honor, J. Lohr joins an

esteemed list of past American Winery of the Year winners that

includes Harlan Estate, Beringer and Chateau Ste. Michelle. J. Lohr

was selected as the winner of the 2010 American Winery of the YearAward by the editors of Wine Enthusiast Magazine for its ongoing

    contributions to the wine industry.

Wine EnthusiastMagazine Editor and Publisher Adam Strum

commented on Mondays announcement, saying, J. Lohr has been a

continual force in the California wine industry for nearly four decades,

passionately championing the Central Coast winegrowing regions of

Paso Robles and Monterey County, and offering great leadership

within the wine industry. In addition, the people at J. Lohr have dedi-

cated themselves to producing high-quality wines, while making

significant contributions in the areas of sustainability, education and

social responsibility. We are thrilled to acknowledge them as our 2010

American Winery of the Year.As a family-owned business, we are honored to have been named

American Winery of the Year, said Jerry Lohr, founder and president

of J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines. This award is the result of the

continual dedication of everyone in the J. Lohr extended family, from

our Director of Winemaking Jeff Meier, who has been with us for over

a quarter century, to our salespeople, distributors, vineyard workers

and winery staff, many of whom have also been with us for decades.

    J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines has been in operation since the early

1970s, when founder Jerry Lohr, a South Dakota native, began to

search for a site for his first vineyards. One of the early pioneers of

high-quality Central Coast winemaking, Jerry Lohr was among thefirst to realize the vast, untapped potential of this now-acclaimed

region with the establishment of his original 280-acre vineyard in the

Arroyo Seco region of Monterey County in 1972. As J. Lohrs

Monterey County estate program has grown, the focus has remained

on cool-climate varietals, including Chardonnay, Riesling, Valdigui

and Pinot Noir. In 1988, J. Lohr began planting Cabernet Sauvignon,

Merlot, Syrah and other red varietals in the Paso Robles region, while

working toward the creation and development of an adjacent winery

and barreling facility. Today, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines has almost

3,700 acres of estate vineyards in Paso Robles, Monterey County and

St. Helena, with two fully operational wine centers in San Jose aPaso Robles, and is sold inover 30 countries worldwide.

In addition to J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines long history in Cen

Coast winemaking, recent developments have further set the win

apart as an industry leader. As part of its commitment to sustainabil

last year J. Lohr unveiled a 3-acre photovoltaic solar tracking syst

(the largest of its kind in the industry), which provides approxima

85 percent of the annual power used at the J. Lohr Paso Robles W

Center and Winery. Other achievements in sustainability have led

the winery being one of the first 17 to earn the Certified Califor

Sustainable Winegrowing distinction, offered by the Califor

Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA).The winerys commitment to innovation and sustainability exte

beyond its own vineyards to the industry at large, and is reflected

the companys support of the worlds first LEED-Platinum teach

winery and vineyards at UC Davis. This facility, part of the Rob

Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science, will feature both th

Lohr Vineyards & Wines Fermentation Room and the J. Lohr Sens

Lab. Other socially conscious commitments include fair employm

practices, a partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundat

to donate 500 mammograms for women in need, and support of o

nizations devoted to the health and well-being of children and fa

    lies.

    by Lisa Pretty

The Rotta tasting room located in the Templeton hills offers a

unique blend of history and modern winemaking. As one of the initial

three wineries in the Paso Robles area, the winery was first established

in 1908 and was later bonded after prohibition by Clement Rotta inthe 1930s. The family winery was known for its hearty Zinfandels and

mainly sold straight from the barrel into gallon glass jugs.

The Rotta winery and label has been resurrected by Clements

grandson Mike Giubbini along with the help of winemaker Mark

Caporale. The sense of tradition and history is very important to

Mike. Although the tasting room currently on the property was

recently built, it was built from the old wood of the original winery

building. Even the redwood sign with Rotta Winery hand sten-

ciled holds childhood memories for Mike he painted that sign

when he was ten years old. Although he did rename the vineyard

Giubbini vineyard, Mike continues to farm mostly Zinfandel in a

head pruned and dry farmed style as his grandfather did many years

    ago.

Mark Caporale brings his many years of winemaking experience in

Napa Valley to Rotta. Sourcing fruit from the estate vineyards as well

as other local Paso Robles growers, Mark delivers an impressive line-

up of award winning wines including Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot,

Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscat Canelli, Zinfandel Port

and Rottas specialty, a Black Monukka Dessert wine.

It is worth a trip to the tasting room just to experience the very

unique Black Monukka wine. The wine embodies the philosophy of

the winery by blending a little known grape varietal with an old w

winemaking technique to produce a sherry-style dessert wine.

wine is actually aged in small barrels left outside in the sun for

extended period of time. The warmth of the sun while aging gives

wine a delicious caramel and butterscotch flavor. If you ask, the tas

room staff will be happy to share a recipe for Rottas Black MonuCake.

Chances are you will be greeted by one of the winerys pets wh

you arrive. Honey the Australian Sheppard, Zin the Labrador

Bores the three-legged cat all add to the charm of the tasting envir

ment. The friendly staff will be happy to share stories of the old d

and chances are Mike Giubbini will be wandering around ei

checking on the vineyard or production issues. While in the tas

room be sure to taste Rottas new releases. The 2006 Merlot has 1

Petite Verdot blended in, giving the wine a dark color and smo

texture. Also new on the tasting list is the 2007 Proprietors Caber

Sauvignon. The Cabernet has a little Merlot and Petite Verdot adto give the wine additional structure and complexity. Coming in

and bold is the 2007 Trinity, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Me

and Cabernet Franc. With the line-up of old and new you will be

    to find a favorite.

WINE COUNTRY NEWS | WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

    by Lisa Pretty

Over two decades ago Castoro Cellars was

founded by the husband and wife team of

Niels and Bimmer Udsen. The winery was

named after the Italian translation of Niels

    long-time nickname Beaver, prompting the

motto Dam Fine Wine. What began as a

venture to produce high-quality wines atreasonable prices for family and friends is

    now a full-blown business with a highly

respected brand, 650 acres of vineyard land

spread across eight locations within the Paso

Robles appellation, a winery with custom-

crush operations, a mobile-bottling service as

well as a tasting room known for its great

    events and warm, welcoming staff.

Although the business has grown dramat-

ically, the husband and wife team have stuck

with their original goal of producing high-

quality wines from Paso Robles fruit that isaccessible to all consumers. We feel wine is

an essential part of the daily meal. We

provide consumers with world class wine

that will allow them a fine bottle with almost

every meal, says Niels. The current offering

includes almost 20 different wines including

several whites, dry reds, interesting blends, a

few dessert wines and even an alcohol-free

varietal grape juice for those under 21 or

designated drivers visiting the tasting room.

Today winemaking at Castoro Cellars is a

collaborative effort of a team including Niels,

Tom Myers, Mikel Olsten and Sherry Holzer.

Together at the winery facility in San Miguel,

surrounded by 175 acres of vines, they work

to continually improve the quality of the

wine vintage after vintage. Adding a custom-

crush operation to the winery has enabled

the winemaking team to invest in state-of-the-art equipment that they may not have

been able to justify for a single brand. They

experiment with techniques to extract the

best characteristics from each varietal as well

as achieving the perfect combinations for

their annual blends. 80% of the wine is now

made from estate-grown fruit giving the

winemaking team control over quality from

the vineyard to the bottle. The vineyards are

all managed with sustainable practices with

over 100 acres certified organic. The

commitment to the environment can be seen

throughout all aspects of the business.

The winery is not the only place where

Castoro Cellars continues to experiment and

innovate. Niels and Bimmer are continually

looking for new, exciting and unique product

offerings for their wine club members. On a

recent trip to Italy, the couple discovered an

Italian grape varietal known as Falanghina

and decided it would be an exciting new

wine to introduce to the Castoro club

members. Falanghina is a fresh, lively

savory white wine that some would

resembles a Pinot Grigio. The problem

the grape was not yet available in the Un

States. The Udsens did not let that stop th

and worked through the lengthy proces

having the vines imported and then qua

tined and certified through the UC D

program. The first of the Falanghina viwill be planted at Castoro in the sprin

    2011.

It will be some time before the

vintage of Falanghina will be bott

however, with so many wines available

heart of Paso Robles wine country just o

Highway 46 West is highly recommend

The Mediterranean style tasting room is s

walk from the parking lot through the gr

lush native plants and specimen cork oak

    Several new releases, single vineyard

    Niels and Bimmer are also

large supporters of the local art

different artist is featured and for

the month of January the theme

is Little People and Big Places

with an exh ibit by Cynd i

    Johnson and Bill Strasen of

Cambria. Also in support of the

    arts, a winter indoor concert

series is offered each year. On

    Saturday, January 15th at 7:30

    p.m. Eric Henderson will be

    touching souls with his guitar

    performance during a magical,

musical evening. Tickets are only$20 and can be purchased on-

    There always seems to be

    something new and exciting

going on at Castoro Cellars. One

way to be a part of the fun is to

join their wine club. In additionto receiving discounted wine,

    Beaver Ramblings will keep

you up to date on what is going

on at the winery. Club members

have many perks including a free

    members BBQ each year and

chance to create the next wine

    blend. April each year, club

    members have the opportunity

to create a blend from barrel

The visually fortified Edna Valley was all

abuzz when sultry sleek Tolosa Winery

opened up its tasting room in 2004. Tolosas

name itself is a tribute to the history of wine-

making in San Luis Obispo. 200 plus years

ago the friars at Mission San Luis Obispo de

Tolosa planted the virgin vineyards in the

area. The Edna Valley as wine people know

it, seems young in spite of this dusty trail,

getting slowly reestablished in the 1960s

and 1970s. Today, this regions aglow with

success in newer varietals that never surrounded Californias Missions:

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. These are indeed the three varietals

that yield the most intense results in Central Californias Edna Valley,

with its constant afternoon onshore windflow and coastal proximity.

Tolosa Winery focused on these three from the start, plus a fewsurprises along the way, like Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc.

In spite of the visible size of this winemaking facility, the Tolosa

Winery only produces a few thousand cases of wine each year. Func-

tioning as a modern production zone at first, the handsome visitor area

came a ways down the road. Its steely winery overlook and the modern

interiors of the tasting room may make you feel like youre in a New

York City wine cavern throbbing with downtempo beats and pacifiers

on request. But actually youre in the breast of the Chardonnay

corridor, the citric center of Chardonnay city if you will. And Tolosa

made its original splash with a legendary unoaked Edna Valley grown

    Chardonnay, showcasing the untamed trop

vibrancy of the Burgundian varietal, w

Friday morning and opted to taste strictly

2007 Pinots, which were many. There

also a House Flight and a Limited Rel

Flight available. I was inspired to visit by

October evening wherein Id tasted a To

2007 Edna Ranch Chardonnay at Crac

Crab in Pismo. The tasting room veteran

jour who was pouring the flights in a Hawaiian printed silk shirt

probably sitting on a home cellar full of older vintage Chardon

the 2007 Edna Ranch and liked its charming, easy sensibilities. T

Greg, the employed giver of the sacramental blood, got into the gstuff. The Vineyard Designate Pinot Noirs. A sip of the savory Ma

Anne Pinot Noir in that glittery Central California sunlight sent

reeling. Beyond Pinot Noir was next, and it was truly next lev

    by Ronda Giangreco

They say that a family that plays together, stays together. But a familythat makes wine together not only has fun, but in the process, they give

us all an example of what wonderful things happen when love and

hard work join hands. When Dick and Delores Kelsey first laid eyes on the winding

country road leading into the magnificent See Canyon, they knew thatthey were home. Dick had spent most of his working years on the sea,but it was a different sort of sea that he envisioned for his later years.

A sea of vines, stretching across the rolling hills of the Central Coastand producing grapes for his very own winery was Dicks vision of the

future. Delores was not so sure at first. Winemaking is a complicated

and fickle undertaking. But Dick was not to be dissuaded. For the twogenerations of Kelseys to follow, that persistence has meant a liveli-

hood, a passion and a means of binding together a family with a dream. Many small wineries boast of being family owned, but few can lay

claim to a staff of three generations. This is not a winery where the

family name is the only contribution made by the owners. Here atKelsey See Canyon nearly everyone from Grandpa Dick to the youngest

grandchildren gets in on the act. The award-winning wines produced

by their efforts are celebrated by everyone in the family. Sons, Keith andRichard have been joined by their spouses and children in helping their

parents to take the winery to the next level of excellence. Richard andLaurie and their three daughters oversee the vineyards where each vine

is hand pruned. Brother Keith handles most of the wine pouring and

marketing efforts, with the younger generation handling such impor-tant tasks as manning the BBQ at events and helping with serving.

Great nephew Travis is now an assistant winemaker. His growing

expertise ensures that Dick Kelseys aspirations will undoubtedlycontinue on to a fourth generation.

It is these labors of love that consistently produce wines of quality necessary to keep Kelsey See Canyon winning award a

award in wine competitions throughout the state. For two y

running, their wines have garnered the Most Popular trophy atMorro Bay Harbor Festival. For the Kelsey family, these accolades

proof that their dedication and commitment to excellence are wortheffort.

But you neednt be a member of the Kelsey family to feel like belong at Kelsey See Canyon. The warmth and hospitality of ywelcome to their tasting room will give you a sense of the affection t

these folks have for their customers and loyal followers. It is surprising that their wine club boasts such a large membership. Peo

who love good wine recognize the value and people who love g

wine experiences cant wait for the next Kelsey See Canyon wine cevent.

From their Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Syrahs and Zin to the lusc

Late Harvest Zin and their delicious Apple Wine, Kelsey See Canhas something for everyone on your wine lover shopping list. S

Keith, Everyone who comes to our winery comments on how all of

wines have such a smooth finish. We love that. There is much to love about Kelsey See Canyonthe buc

setting, the elegant, but approachable wines and most of all, the Kelthemselves. It would be hard to imagine a more good-natured

cordial clan. Grab a wine glass, pull up a chair and stay awhile. Yo

Eric Hickey practically has winemaking in

his DNA. His father, Dave Hickey, is the wine-

maker of sparkling wines at Laetitia Winery,

located in Arroyo Grande in San Luis Obispo

County, while Eric oversees all of the still

wine production and vineyards. Eric joined

the winery in the early days when it was orig-

inally known as a Champagne house: Maison

Deutz. It changed hands in 1997 and became

    Laetitia Winery which nonetheless still

produces sparkling wines.Laetitia offers three distinct labels: Nadia

(red and white blended wines), Barnwood

(Grenache, Cabernet, Merlot and Port from

remote vineyards located in Santa Barbaras

back country) and the Laetitia label which has

a focus on Pinot Noir. In fact, with its three

tiers: estate, reserve and single vineyard,

Laetitia holds the largest privately owned

Pinot Noir plantings in California. The estate

is comprised of 2,000 acres, with 620 acres

currently planted to grape vines. This is a lot

of work for Eric. It forces me to stay in tune

with all aspects of winemaking for all the vari-

eties and experiment with them, he says.

As head winemaker since 2002, Eric

worked diligently in the cellar prior to that

learning all about harvests and his hard work

and attention to detail paid off. In 1994 he

was appointed cellar master and worked

    alongside French winemaker Christian

Rougenant, learning from the best. He

supplemented his trial by fire winemaking

education by enrolling in UC Davis programsto further add to his knowledge base. He also

made trips to France where he sampled wines

in the Rhne Valley, Burgundy and Bordeaux.

Stylistically, Erics wines exemplify his love of

and respect for the land. The wines are very

well balanced so they age well, he says. I

also work hard at making them consistent

year to year. And as every winemaker knows,

thats the real test; taking what Mother Nature

gives you and making it as seamless as

    possible.

But every winemaker needs time off

when Eric is not crafting wine he can

found surfing off the California coast wh

he regains a focused approach to his jo

Laetitia. I have regular board meetings,

admits to his surfing compulsion. Actua

went to Hawaii this year and surfed so

good waves in the North Shore,

    confesses. Just like surfing, winemakin

marrying art with science, you have to

flexible and know how to hold your brea

Whole cluster Grenache and whole clu

The saying that big things come in

small packages is true. At first look,

Hoppes Garden Bistro & Wine Shop is an

    attractive looking restaurant, but theres

    more than meets the eye.

Located in Cayucos, Hoppes has been a

favorite restaurant in a close-knit commu-

nity of artists, beachcombers and surfers.

Not only locally known; growing adulation

continues to earn its place amongst the

worst-kept secrets in California. Lauded by

foodies and critics alike, Hoppes even had

one TV host oohing and ahhing between

bites of Sauteed Cayucos Red Abalone on

the set of his TV show, VisitingWith

    Huell Howser.

Hoppes Garden Bistro has proven itself

as among the very best the county has to

offer in using seasonally fresh ingredients,

for its wildly diverse menu and mouth-

    watering appetizers, meat, seafood and

vegetable entrees, salads and desserts eye-

catching presentation and delightfulambiance. People who are seeking memo-

    rable dining experiences and celebrating

every occasion can be found at Hoppes,

from birthdays, to graduations, to golden

    anniversaries. Even their more casual

entrees and sides are to die-for, including

    Portabella Burgers, Heirloom Tomato Salad,

and Wasabi Mashed Potatoes. With excep-

tions, lunch entrees range from about $8 to

$14 (Angus Flat Iron Steak), and dinner

entrees from $12 to $60 (Whole Colorado

    Rack of Lamb).

The wine list at Hoppes is impressive

and boasts 200 varieties for enjoying, agin,

or gift-giving. Theres assistance, too, if

youre wondering what to pair with your

Smoked Pheasant Pizza or Skillet Seared

Elk Chops. One of Hoppes delights is their

    Philosophers Menu (lunch/dinner), pairing

a handmade cheese assortment and pat

with reserve wines for $25. Dinnertime prix

fixe offerings include the Gourmet Menu: a

    salad and Champagne appetizer, first

course with two wines, main course with

wine and dessert choices for just $65.Hoppes Garden Bistro also has an inter-

esting history. The old Way Station building

was constructed in 1876 as a hotel by the

Pedraita Family, who purchased the site

from English immigrant and town founder

Captain James Cass. Initially, the main

building and dining room was built.

However, two other buildings were relo-

cated from other parts of town to provide

for a kitchen and four of its twelve

bedrooms. This addition formed wings on

the existing property, creating the Cotta

    Hotel.

In addition to travelers, the hotel play

host to the rich and famous, such as t William Randolph Hearst Family dur

    lengthy construction of Hearst Castle

    San Simeon. Renowned operatic contra

    and WWI patriot Ernestine Shuman

Heinke sang there. Her friend, a Pol

pianist, statesman, and Paso Robles vintn

    Ignacy Jan Paderewski, accompanied her

the hotels piano. Later, the building

ignored from the 1940s until 1974, wh

Henry and Mary Ellen Eisemann boug

and restored the grand dame to its form

glory. With the purchase Mr. Eisema

brainstormed plans for the adjacent Englgarden, laying 20,000 bricks (some of th

borrowed from the former kitchens ran

oven), which guests enjoy to this day. De

cated to his wifes mother with a perenn

green thumb, he also thoughtfully adde

    Victorian pavilion, currently a favor

    wedding location.

Theres exciting recent news coming out of

Paso Robles. Eos, the iconic Central Coast

winery, has been purchased by Foley Family

Wines, one of the countrys most prestigious

    wine producing companies. The acquisition

not only gives owner Bill Foley a foothold in

the celebrated Paso Robles AVA, but also guar-

antees the continued operation of one of theregions most respected producers.

In talking about his long-term goals for the

property, Bill Foley says, We are planning to

devote a great deal of our resources,

manpower and energy into making Eos one of

the marquee estates in this important viticul-

tural area. In addition to the stunning beauty

of the countryside, Paso Robles has demon-

strated a remarkable ability to produce world-

class wines from a number of different vari-

eties. Eos is one of the AVAs most significantbrands. Foley also intends to expand Eos

    national distribution to make sure

customers across the country have access to

    all of the winerys releases.

Foley is no newcomer to the Central Coast.

His portfolio includes three of the areas top

    wineries: Firestone Vineyards (Santa Ynez

Valley), Lincourt Vineyards (Santa Rita Hills)

and Foley Estates (Santa Rita Hills). Foley also

    owns properties in Northern California,

    Washington and New Zealand including,

Chalk Hill, Merus, Kuleto, Sebastiani, Three

    Rivers and Vavasour.

Eos was founded in the mid-1980s by the

Arciero family. Today, the winery produces

    Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Late

    Harvest Moscato, Malbec, Merlot, Muscat

Canelli, Petite Sirah, Pinot Grigio, SauvignonBlanc, Zinfandel and Zinfandel Port. Eos has

earned praise from the countrys top wine

publications who have rated Tears of Dew

late harvest Moscato as one of Californias

finest dessert wines. The winery has also

garnered numerous 90+ scores for Petite

    Sirah, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The immediate impact of the changeover

includes the moving of Eos tasting room and

wine club down the road to the former Fire-

stone Paso Robles tasting room, at 2300Airport Road off Highway 46 East. Open daily

    from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the spacious new

tasting room boasts a friendly and knowledge-

able staff, a beautiful event room for private

parties, an outdoor pole barn, picnic areas,

    and a veranda.

We are all excited about the many changes

for both Eos and Firestone, said Heidi

    Adams, Assistant Tasting Room Manager.

The new tasting room will have the same

casual, comfortable feel it had in the past a

our customers will have access to a wi

selection of wines. If youve never been h
