MeettheWildcats:LoadedwithTalent
Woody Jenkins Woody Jenkins Editor, Central City News
CENTRAL — Young but talented — that’s a pretty fair description of the 2011 Central High Wildcat football team. Last Friday night’s Jamboree game against East Feliciana was im-pressive. The Wildcats made plenty of mistakes, but East Feliciana has one of the biggest and most talented
teams Central will face all year. East Feliciana went 12-0 last year until losing in the semi-finals to perennial State Champion John Curtis. The fact that Central was able to stay on the field with East Fe-liciana was a major accomplishment. The fact that the Wildcats walked away with a 7-2

victory was even better. Central will be at Wildcat Sta-dium this Friday night against Is-trouma, which played well in its jamboree but is still in a rebuilding mode. Central fans should look past Istrouma only in one sense — it’s time to make travel plans for next Friday’s game in Lafayette against St. Thomas More.
The game against St. Thomas More will be Central’s only out-of-town game during the regular sea-son, and it was designed by Central head coach Doug Dotson to be a se-rious test of Central’s metal. St. Thomas More is a 4A school, which plays in District 5-4A. They were 13-0 in 5A last year, until los-ing in the playoffs. St. Thomas More is coached by Jim Hightower, one of Louisiana’s all-time great coaches and a mentor of Doug Dot-son. Hightower has a career record of 308-106-1. The quality of high school foot-ball in the Baton Rouge area is sig-nificantly below that in Acadiana. Coach Dotson wants Central to play a powerhouse of that region, in preparation for a successful run in the playoffs. Coach Dotson is asking all true Central Wildcat fans to make plans now to travel to Lafayette next Fri-day, Sept. 9 for the 7 p.m. game against St. Thomas More. St. Thomas More puts on a big show at its home field and tries to intimidate the visitors. Coach Dotson feels your presence in the stands in large numbers could give the Wildcats a significant and unex-pected advantage.
HHH MAKING MEMORIES FOR A LIFETIME — Members of the Central High football team will re-live the events of this coming season
over and over in their minds for the rest of their lives. The friendships, coaches, games, practices, accom-plishments, victories, defeats will all be recorded and remembered. Every person is different, and we remember different things. I sug-gest to each player that you keep a journal of the season. Keep a record of what happens each day at prac-tice, the humorous things that are said, the inspirational comments, game preparation, and the games

HHH JIMDOUSAY’SBIGHIT. It’s funny the things you remember and the things you for-get about football. In 1962, Istrouma won the State Championship, and 15 players received college scholarships. It was one of the great-est high school teams in state history, people said. I was in the 10th grade and played safe-ty on the JV team. Later that school year, in April 1963, junior All-State running back Jim Dousay was at spring training, and so was I. I found myself lined up at safety, and the quarterback handed Dousay the ball. Dousay wasn’t gigantic but he was very fast and pow-erful. I had seen 300-pound men knocked out by a hit from Dousay. He went on to be All-SEC at LSU. Dousay ran off tackle and broke through
the line. In my mind, I can see him right now heading directly toward me, very much like an angry bull. It was a cold day, and I swear there was steam coming out of his nostrils. Safety is a great position. If you’re fast, you may go an entire season without actually being hit hard. Yet, you can hit receivers hard as they go up for the ball and take them out of the play. When defending against broken field running, you can usually tackle the run-ner from the side. For the safety, it’s usually a glancing blow, nothing serious. But Dousay was heading right toward me. He wasn’t trying to fake me out or out run me. I was certain he was planning to run right over me! We were in a scrimmage mode, and ev-eryone was there. Little Fuzzy Brown, the principal, was watching intently, as was Mr. Clyde Lindsey, the assistant principal and

Central Trims East Feliciana 7-2 in

Central HeavilyFavored OverIstrouma FridayIn First Game CENTRAL — The Central High Wildcats will make their season de-but this Friday night at 7 p.m. when they host the Istrouma Indians at Wildcat Stadium. Both teams are fresh off victories in last Friday’s jamboree games. Central is aiming for its 4th straight District Championship in District 4-5A, while Istrouma is in a rebuilding year in District 6-4A, af-ter finishing 1-9 last season. The In-dians are coached by first-year head coach Johnny Felders. Central’s 7-2 victory over East Feliciana in the Zachary Jamboree came on a 73-yard pass from junior quarterback Brett Courville to soph-omore running back Gary Triplet. Once Triplet got the ball, even East Feliciana’s speedy defensive backs couldn’t catch him. Triplet is one of the state’s fastest sprinters during track season. Earlier in the game, Triplet was

tackled in the end zone for a safety. Dotson said that was due to a missed block. Central got a break early in the game when East Feliciana’s All-State quarterback Kendell Beckwith was ejected from the game after taking a swing at a Central player.
What provoked him was unclear, but without the 6’3” 225 junior, East Feliciana had trouble getting its of-fense going. For the Istrouma game, Coach Dotson asks Central fans to show up en masse and wear maroon. The
coach said, “Maroon is the appro-priate color to wear at any Central game, but sometime during the sea-son, we will have a white-out or a black-out.” Coach Dotson empha-sized that next Friday’s game in Lafayette against St. Thomas More
is the only major road trip of the year. He said he is hoping for a big turnout by Central fans, to help give them an edge against St. Thomas More. St. Thomas More, now 4A, was 13-0 last season and lost in the playoffs to Acadiana.

former All-American at LSU. The head coach, Big Fuzz, was watch-ing, as well assistant coaches Moose Stewart, Leon Mc Graw, and Coon Porta. It would have been a perfect time to quickly lay down flat or dodge Dousay somehow. But I was trapped. I was going to have to tackle All-State, future All-SEC Jim Dousay head on. I was going to die. There was no question about that. Resigned to that fact, I was in the ready position. Dousay had his head down, and I was about to be hit by a force about equal to a small pickup truck. Then suddenly Dousay looked up, and through his helmet, I saw his blue eyes smiling! Perhaps he thought for a moment, this kid is not really a football player, why should I end his life now? Maybe he’ll have children and grandchil-dren someday! For whatever reason, Dousay
decided to let me live. He began pulling up. By the time he hit me, he was going half-speed. And I made a perfect tackle! Me! I tackled Jim Dousay! “Good job, Jenkins!” Big Fuzz roared. “Good job, son!”
coach McGraw said. “What’s wrong with you, Dousay?” Big Fuzz said. “That was pathetic!” Unfortunately for opponents of Istrouma and LSU, I never saw Dousay be that compassionate again!

Central High Wildcats HeadCoach: Doug Dotson (2nd year) Top Players: DB/WR Logan Metcalfe (5-11, 185, SR); DE Matt Edwards; WR Chaz King (6-0, 170, SR); DT Timothy Co-lomb (6-2, 255, SR); RB Zachary Evans (5-9, 175, SR); DE/LB Joey Jarreau (6-1, 225, SR); TE/DE Zach Hetrick (6-3, 235, SR); OG/OT Tyler Abadie; LB Antonio Ragusa; LB Thomas Eddlemon; QB Brett Courville; FB John Davis (5-9, 201, SR); OT Thomas Willis (6-1, 190, SR); OC/OG Brenton Scar-dina (5-10, 205, SR); RB Lamonte Janeau; QB Jake Meyer; CB Justin Lodge (5-10, 160, SR); OG/OC Alex Frank (5-11, 230, SR); WR Trevor Harding (5-8, 160, SR). Key Losses: 5A All State DB James Richardson (SMU), RB Trevor Sansone
(Track), Kicker Matthew Thibodeaux, and DE Taylor Jenkins (Southeastern). Team Outlook: In 2010 Central was supposed to be rebuilding after losing sev-eral key players to college. However, they made the playoffs last season with a young team, and this year they return one heck of a defense and some really great young ath-letes on offense. There are two quarterbacks that can start at any time. QB BrettCour-ville has a cannon arm and good feet in the pocket and QB Jake Meyer has the arm and potential to also be very good. When these two kids develop, this team will be hard to beat and this offense will be tough to stop.
WR Chaz King, WR Hunter Cazes, WR TrevorHarding, WR Joseph Pouciau, and sometimes DB Logan Metcalfe give you a top notch group with really good hands and speed. The running game will have a thumper with speed in RB Lamonte Ja-neau, who brings speed and has the size to run between the tackles. RB ZachEvans (5-9, 175) and RB Devon Gales can run a 4.45/40, and JohnDavis (5-9, 210) is a great blocker for the run game. The offen-sive line is young but talented, led by vet-erans OC/OG AlexFrank (5-11, 230) who plays bigger and OG/OC BrentonScardi-

CENTRAL — Central Private will travel to Clinton for a game against arch-rival Silliman Academy at 7 p.m. Friday night at Silliman. This is Silliman’s best team in four or five years, but Central Pri-vate believes they can win. CPS defeated Silliman 7-6 in the jam-boree three weeks ago. Central Private began regular season play on Aug. 19. It has lost to CENLA and the Baton Rouge Patriots. The Patriots’ game was a shootout, which CPS narrowly lost 42-41. Central Private head coach Mike Longmire is proud of his 25-mem-ber team, eight of whom play on of-fense and defense. However, he’s far from satisfied with the team’s performance to date. “Our offense is moving the ball well, but our defense needs a lot of
improvement,” he said. Longmire is happy with his of-fensive line — center Rhett Sequin, right guard David Basham, left guard Logan Prather, right tackle Brennan West, and left tackle Mar-cus Sandifer. Running back Ryan Bowman has been a standout for the Rebels,
as has split end Lance Wicker. Turnovers have been a major problem for Central Private. Last week, they suffered four intercep-tions and three fumbles. Some of the most consistent players have been Ryan Bowman, Brennan West, and Landon Bou-dreaux.
Central Private returned to its old district this year and will play against Centreville Academy, Sil-liman, Oak Forest, and Bowling Green. Centreville is one of the top teams in the state. The Rebels have major road trips coming up to Natchez and Rayville. Coach Longmire said fan sup-port for the Rebels has been good this year and he hopes many peo-ple will be able to follow Central Private on its road trips.

Recommendation of Reapportionment Committee
CENTRAL — After six public hear-ings and two votes, the Central Mayor’s Committee on Reappor-tionment agreed Tuesday night to support a plan that would create a seven-member City Council. Five members of the City Council would be elected from single-member dis-tricts and two at-large citywide. Councilman Wayne Messina, who served as chairman of the com-mittee, did not vote but said he sup-ports the committee’s recommenda-tions. Four members of the committee supported the 5+2 plan. Two com-mittee members wanted five single-member districts with no at-large representatives, and one committee member favored having five mem-bers elected at large from separate designated seats. Messina said the committee held public hearings on Feb. 8, March 6, April 17, Aug. 17, Aug. 24, and Aug. 30. “We had more than 100 citizens participate in the past three meetings, and we are very grateful to everyone who came to express their views.” Messina said he is preparing a report on the committee’s recom-mendations, which he will submit to Mayor Mac Watts for his consid-eration. “I hope the Mayor and the Council will respect the decisions of this committee, which has worked very hard.”
na (5-10, 205). The defense will be the strength of this team. The young talented offense just needs time to get the chemis-try going into the 2011 season. The de-fensive line for Central is one of the best in Baton Rouge, and it’s led by a number of great kids. DE Zach Hetrick (6-3, 235) had 88 tackles and 12 sacks in 2010 and is very quick. DE Joey Jarreau (6-

1, 225) had 47 tackles and 7 sacks, and is also fast enough to play LB. Other great defensive players are DT John Milton, DE Matt Edwards, DT Brandon Lee, and DT Tim Colomb (6-2, 260) who is just starting to learn the game with great power and speed. The Linebacking group will be much improved led by hard hitting Antonio Ragusa, Thomas Eddlemon, and the young, fast, and hard hitting Dar-ius Wallace. The defensive backfield will miss DB James Richardson, but there’s more talent as a group back in 2011. They’re lead by sleeper recruit SS Logan Metcalfe (4.55/40, 5-11, 185) who had 81 tackles, 8 sacks, and 1 interception on the season. CB Justin Lodge (5-10, 160, 4.46/40), Craig Jones (4.5/40), and Paul Broussard (4.45/40) along with Metcalfe make up a very talented secondary. This is a better team than in 2010, and the sky is the limit for the Wildcats in 2011.
