Milwaukie Center’s Mission: To be a link to resources for older adults and their families and a place for the community to gather, grow and contribute.
Milwaukie Center, a division of North Clackamas Parks and Recreation District, is a multi-purpose community center operated as a focal point for senior services, recreation and learning.
5440 SE Kellogg Creek Drive Milwaukie, OR 97222 Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. (503) 653-8100 FAX: (503) 794-8016
Message from our Center Supervisor July is not only the month for long warm days, BBQ’s and fireworks, it also marks the beginning of our new fiscal year.
As a governmental agency the Milwaukie Center budgets from July 1st to June 30th every year. While a majority of our financial support comes from the North Clackamas Parks Recreation District General Fund and governmental support, we rely heavily on Patron support to continue providing the high level of service and programs we offer. Whether it be supporting meals, class registrations, trips, pay an activity fee or make a financial gift through the Friends of the Milwaukie Center, all make a difference. Your financial support truly enables the Milwaukie Center to thrive in its mission to “be a link to resources for older adults and their families and place for the community to gather, grow and contribute.”
—Marty Hanley, Center Supervisor
A ReminderThe Center does not provide services that are normally provided by a paid attendant, nurse or personal caregiver (i.e. incontinence, ability to use the restroom facilities by one’s self or preventing a participant from leaving the Center). The provision of any personal care by staff is beyond our capability.

Friend of the Center AwardEach year, the Friends board and staff select a “Friend of the Center” who has made a lasting impact through their actions and deeds. This year, the award was given to the Friends of the Milwaukie Center Quilting Committee. This group of 6 to 8 women meet on the Milwaukie Center Stage every Thursday morning to hand sew quilts for clients. The money generated from their efforts helps support the programs and services at the Milwaukie Center. But where they really shine is at the Quilt Show held each March. All year long, the Friends receive donations of fabric, yarn, craft items and more. These dedicated ladies sort, clean, fold and prepare the donated items to sell at their “boutique” during the Quilt Show. The last two years, their sales have exceeded $4,000. We tip our hats to this hard-working group!
Center/Community Advisory BoardThe next Center/Community Advisory Board (C/CAB) meeting will be a joint meeting with the Friends of the Milwaukie Center board. The meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, July 11 at the Milwaukie Center. Board Members: Bill Bersie, Chair; Erin Thompson, Ben Horner-Johnson, Siri Bernard, Kim Buchholz, Louise Fisher, Lisa Ferguson, Teena Hall, Virginia Seitz, Ben Tabler.

AFFORDABLE HEARING AIDSThirty-six million Americans have hearing loss, and the 7 million Americans who cannot afford hearing aids have become an underserved population. Lions Clubs and LCIF are working to address this issue through a pilot program of the Lions Affordable Hearing Aid Project (AHAP).
Through the Affordable Hearing Aid Project, Lions are reaching hearing-impaired people of limited income in almost every community in the United States. The project provids high-quality, low-cost hearing aids as well as the services of hearing care professionals to test and fit the aids, and provide follow-up care. Since 2009, 768 hearing aids have been provided to people who otherwise could not afford them.
The AHAP program is only available through local Lions clubs; individuals may not apply independently to receive a hearing aid. Contact your local Lions club, or contact Lions AHAP at (630) 203-3837

LETTER FROM THE EDITORYou noticed! The new format for the newsletter is a big hit. We’ve been getting lots of compliments on the pictures, colors, easy to read articles, interesting news and beautiful cover of Dale Chihuly’s art at the Tacoma Museum of Glass.
You’ve called, stopped by, emailed and commented on FaceBook to let us know how much you enjoyed the June edition. We hope you like the July Centerpoint as much. The cover this month is the view from a hike on Mt. Talbert led by Dick Shook. Take advantage of these hikes if you get a chance. You will see a whole new perspective of the area we live in.
Thanks so much to Moda for donating the color printing on quality paper. This generous donation makes all the difference in the world! It makes it possible for us to put thousands of dollars into programs for you that would have been spent on the newsletter. Definitely a win-win situation.
Suggestions? I’d love to hear what you want to see in the newsletter. I can’t promise to accommodate every request, but I’m always looking for interesting ideas and to share. Keep talking!
—Robin Bruce, Centerpoint Editor
