Some JCCGW regulars say that the Center is their home away from home. Member Celia Barash spends so much time at the Center that one could turn that phrase around and say her real home is her home away from the JCCGW!

Celia was born in Washington, DC, and moved to Los Angeles with her family when she was 3. At 18, she went to Israel (she remembers the exact day because it was six days after the Six-Day War) and attended The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. After graduation, she moved back to the DC area and earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Maryland.

Some 40 years ago, Celia worked at Camp JCC supervising the leadership-in-training program. She also taught Hebrew at the Center for Camp JCC and for young adults who were planning to go to Israel.

Celia and her husband David both attended singles programs at the JCCGW (but, alas,

this wasn’t where they met). They have two sons who, when they were young, Celia and David brought to the JCCGW for programs such as Chanukah and Purim celebrations, Fill-in-the-Gap and babysitting.

Currently, Celia is education director of Bethesda Chevy Chase Jewish Community Group (BCCJCG) which meets at the Center on Sundays. On Wednesday nights, she is at the Center teaching Hebrew for BCCJCG. Celia has also worked for Montgomery County Social Services, JSSA, the Hebrew Home and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

Celia and David work out in the JCCGW fitness center several days each week. In the summer, they spend a lot of time at the outdoor pool.

Ellie, Celia and David’s granddaughter, is one year old. Celia has been bringing Ellie to the JCCGW every Friday since Ellie was three months old. They attend Shabbat Shalom playgroup in the parenting center,

head to the atrium for Shabbat Sing, and then have lunch. Exhausted from all that activity, Ellie takes a much-deserved snooze and when she wakes up, David is there to whisk her off to play at Recreation Station, the Center’s indoor play gym.

Working out at the JCCGW for so many years has paid off for Celia. She is now in great shape for all the bending, lifting and schlepping she does on Fridays spending time at the Center with Ellie. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

There are two things that I love most about being at the JCC. The first is that on any given day, I can greet a preschooler and a senior. There is no generation gap here as our programs attract everyone from the “greatest generation” to “boomers” to “Gen Xers” to “Millennials.” The second is the incredible variety of programs happening here every day – from fitness to preschool, from yoga to senior lunch, from water aerobics to dance, from camp to literature and film – the list goes on. Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment that serves so many with such variety motivates me and keeps me thinking about what we can do next to engage and meet the needs of our community.

And there is never a shortage of things we can do next at the Center. We are often approached with new program ideas or offers, requests to partner with another organization to host a program in the Center, and requests to co-sponsor another organization’s program held elsewhere. Assessing these opportunities takes considerable time and thought. The filter that my staff and I use is whether the opportunity advances our mission and aligns with our values. We consider whether the program builds community or connects us with Israel. Is it inclusive? Will it help advance a participant’s mind, body and/or spirit? And, of course, we have to consider financial implications.

Last September, I was intrigued when a colleague presented me with an opportunity for our Center to apply to participate in The Edmond J. Safra National Parkinson’s Wellness Initiative. This program started in 2007 as a ground-breaking community-based partnership with the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF), the JCC of Manhattan and the NYU Langone Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center, funded by The Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation. What attracted me to the possibility of participating is that the program involves a new community center based model of care for patients with Parkinson’s disease. Further, the concept connects directly to our values of serving the entire community, caring and compassion, diversity and inclusion, and a holistic approach to wellness. In addition, we would have the opportunity to partner with an NPF Center of Excellence to improve the wellness of individuals and families affected by Parkinson’s in the Greater Washington area.

What I learned through the application process is that Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative disease (after Alzheimer’s), affecting almost one million Americans. It is associated with a progressive loss of motor control as well as non-motor control symptoms such as

depression and anxiety. There is no cure and almost 60,000 new cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. While the incidence of Parkinson’s increases with age, an estimated four percent of people with Parkinson’s are diagnosed by age 50.

I am thrilled to announce that our Center and the JCC of Greater Boston were the first two JCCs selected for the expansion of this

initiative. We will receive a three-year grant and technical assistance and support from Georgetown University Medical Center to build a quality, comprehensive Parkinson’s Wellness program with exercise, support and educational components.

The goals of this program are:• To provide vitally needed wellness, support and

education opportunities for individuals living with Parkinson’s and their families and friends.

• To raise awareness about Parkinson’s and living well with Parkinson’s.

• To become part of a national network of compassionate partners in this initiative to provide hope and improve quality of life for individuals living with Parkinson’s.

• To collect data on program outcomes that will be shared at the national and international levels.

This is a special opportunity for our Center to partner with Georgetown University Medical Center to put wellness within the reach of individuals and families affected by Parkinson’s through a new approach that combines expert medical care with intentional wellness, through physical exercise, education and support in a warm community environment. The program’s low-cost services will be open to anyone with Parkinson’s. Please look for announcements later this spring as we roll out this next new wellness initiative.

This modified indoor triathlon is for individuals age 13-26 with special needs. Become a triathlete in just 60 minutes (swim for 10 minutes; bike for 30 minutes; run for 20 minutes).
