LID (Low-impact development)

■ Low Impact Development

– Systems that mimic

the surrounding

environment

– Using predominantly

soil and rainwater, LID

manages storm water

Page 34: CENTER FOR INNOVATION · DESIGN CHARETTE: Steam Punk Wins! S cience T echnology E ngineering A rt M athematics Key Concepts : Create collaboration spaces that combine creative arts,

Water Quality■ What is it? water treatment in order to reduce the amount of

contaminants (ie heavy metals, nutrients, chemicals) released

by the building/its use.

■ Summer salmonoid habitat in Mill Creek downstream of the site

of the innovation lab will require enhanced water quality

treatment.

– 3 options:

■ Bioretention

■ Two facility treament train

■ Proprietary treatment system

■ We chose bioretention as our method of improving water quality

from the new development. It was the least invasive to the

current school ground layout/structure and matched the

landscape visions of the landscape architects.

Yellow: project area

Gray: roof

White: non roof hard surface

Green: bioretention area

Page 36: CENTER FOR INNOVATION · DESIGN CHARETTE: Steam Punk Wins! S cience T echnology E ngineering A rt M athematics Key Concepts : Create collaboration spaces that combine creative arts,

Bio-Retention■ To determine bio retention, calculations of the buildings footprint must be done

■ Permeable pavement in outside public spaces

Load Paths, Types of Loads

■ Gravity Load Path: Slabbeamsgirderscolumnsfoundation

■ Lateral Load Path: Braced framesfoundation

■ Types of Loads (measured in psf, pounds per square foot)

– Live Load: Anything that is variable or changing. (ie snow, rain, people,

supplies)

– Examples of live loads: residential spaces, corridors, common use

decks, lobbies, offices.

– Live loads for different kinds of structures are outlined in the ASCE 7-

10: Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures

■ There is a minimum range of 40-100psf live load requirement for schools

depending on how the space will be used.

– Dead Load: Any materials that remain stationary. (ie walls, floors,

columns, ceilings, framings

Page 40: CENTER FOR INNOVATION · DESIGN CHARETTE: Steam Punk Wins! S cience T echnology E ngineering A rt M athematics Key Concepts : Create collaboration spaces that combine creative arts,

Building Materials, Seismic Design

■ Building Materials: Two of the most commonly used building

materials in modern structures are concrete and steel. Concrete

is good in compression and steel is good in tension.

Acombination of these two materials allows for a seismically

strong building.

■ Older buildings are made out of brittle materials such as

brick/stone. It is difficult to update buildings like this without

demolishing the entire structure because new construction

needs to comply with modern seismic design standards and

thresholds.

■ Different geographical locations have different seismic ground

mation values, importance factor/risk categories and seismic

design categories

– These determine the type of structural system that would

best fit the structure

Page 41: CENTER FOR INNOVATION · DESIGN CHARETTE: Steam Punk Wins! S cience T echnology E ngineering A rt M athematics Key Concepts : Create collaboration spaces that combine creative arts,

Frames and Joints■ We placed steel brace frames throughout the building

– Designed so that they are visible

– Placed to prevent twisting or swaying

■ We decided to use seismic joints to:

– Protect against earthquakes

– Separate the school from the Lab

Page 42: CENTER FOR INNOVATION · DESIGN CHARETTE: Steam Punk Wins! S cience T echnology E ngineering A rt M athematics Key Concepts : Create collaboration spaces that combine creative arts,

Column Placement, Lateral System

Vertical white lines are columns which were placed frequently enough to support the building

sufficiently and in strategic locations (mostly within walls) to avoid being in the center of a classroom.

The pink x’s are brace frames that will support the lateral forces (ie wind) against the building.

Column info:

5x5x1/4” tube

columns, 4” flange

Page 43: CENTER FOR INNOVATION · DESIGN CHARETTE: Steam Punk Wins! S cience T echnology E ngineering A rt M athematics Key Concepts : Create collaboration spaces that combine creative arts,

Gantry Crane■ We calculated the sizes of the steel beams and

columns needed for the gantry crane to support

the weight of the average car (3,000 pounds)

A standard gantry crane design

• 4” by 4”

columns

• 8” by 4” Flange
