2. The Academy on Monday - Philosophy

MISSION STATEMENT "Education for Everyone and for All Ages"The idea behind the "Montagsakademie” is to offer "education for everyone and for all ages" through a series of open access lectures by well-known scholars for the general public, thus providing an interesting insight into many fields of research, not only at the University of Graz. Each year there is a key theme, i.e. "Sustainability", "Future Development" or the "Memorial Year 2005", providing listeners with a wide range of academic approaches to each topic. The lectures take place in the Aula of the University of Graz on 13 Mondays during the academic year.

TARGET GROUP The University of Graz invites everyone who is interested in furthering their knowledge to attend the lectures of the Academy, no matter what previous education they have received. The lectures are open to everyone. Registration is not necessary; the attendance is also free of charge.

eMONTAG Since the beginning of the academic year in 2004/05, the “Montagsakademie” has been broadcast live to partner institutions in Austria. Starting with just 3 "pioneers", today 11 partner institutions are following the lectures and attendees are able to take an active part in the discussion afterwards. Two local radio stations are also broadcasting lectures in their programmes.

ACADEMIC BOARD/ORGANISATION The programme for the Academy is developed by a team of professors headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Irmtraud Fischer. The Center for Continuing Education, a department of the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Knowledge Transfer, is responsible for the project development and organisation.

3. How to strengthen the 3L concept?

Reflections on how to strengthen the 3L concept within the universities (the role of forums, associations, EUCEN etc):

Connection between developmental work and research, not only focus on UCE management and organisation

Institutional level: networking, 2. to work with those who want to work with you and 2. to work with those you have to work with

Regional level: strategic partnerships, developmental partnerships, involvement of stakeholders

National level: AUCEN, Conference of Rectors, Professional Bodies, other relevant Networks, Working groups of specific Networks, Alumni Associations, etc.

3. How to strengthen the 3L concept? – at European level

Policy - Lobbying & “Learning from each other” (staff development) & Innovation – FOR THE BENEFITS OF THE CITIZENS!

Example: EUCEN, European projects, e.g BEFLEX (www.eucen.org/beflex ), EQUIPE plus (www.equipeplus.org ); ADD LIFE (http://add-life.uni-graz.at )

Hanover 39/30 Nov-1 Dec: 33rd EUCEN Symposium The University as an International and Regional Actor – UCE and Professional Development

EUA (http://www.eua.be/ )

Organisations for specific topics, e.g. for Learning in Later Life

Professional Bodies, e.g. for Public Health, etc.

3. How to strengthen the 3L concept? – at European level

A real challenge: How to cope with the ever increasing complexity and speed?

e.g. EU – policy and initiatives – consultation processes: How to participate? How to “digest” at national and institutional level, how as a professional trying to overview what is going on and what is coming up?

And:

Is Europe only concerned with Europe?

3. How to strengthen the 3L concept? – Future?

- Balance “academic learning” – “trainings”

- Capable teachers/facilitators

- Development of innovative learning environments (not only new technology) – research-led developmental work!

- Flexible pathways

- Quality development

- Entrepreneurial

- Responsive to environment

- Institutionalised

- Creation of new learning opportunities (and bridging open access and academia) – also for older learners
