Introduction The Kresge Foundation has provided vital support to the New York City Health Department and other collaborating city agencies in the development of a citywide Active Design Program charged with disseminating and implementing the NYC Active Design Guidelines (the Guidelines). Available for download at www.nyc.gov/adg, the Guidelines provide architects, landscape architects, urban designers, engineers, planners, and real estate professionals with a manual of strategies for creating healthier buildings, streets, and urban spaces based on the latest academic research and best practices in the field. Support from the Kresge Foundation has been critical in conducting the outreach and training activities necessary to achieve this goal. Ultimately, the training of these built environment professionals is expected to result in expansive environmental changes that will integrate routine physical activity back into people’s daily lives as well as help reduce the city’s epidemic obesity and chronic disease rates.
This update summarizes the progress made on the project for Year 1 (June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011)This update is divided into the following sections:

Active Design 101Active Design 101 is a one hour presentation and discussion session that Suzanne Nienaber, the Training Coordinator, conducts with city staff, private sector designers, and members of local professional associations, among others. This session is designed to: provide built environment professionals with a foundation of understanding about why Active Design is important; introduce them to the contents of the Active Design Guidelines; and inspire them to download and use the Guidelines and incorporate consideration for physical activity and health into their work on an ongoing basis.
Who have we reached so far?As of May 31, 2011, approximately 1,400 individuals have participated in an Active Design 101 session – 988 through 39 face-to-face trainings in the NYC region, and 404 through one webinar conducted in January 2011 that attracted both local and national participation.
