Some time ago, PCC staff read What Every Church Member Should Know About Poverty by Bill Ehlig and Ruby Payne. Inspired, we sent Nicole Jennings, Director of Family Programs, and Susan Frank, Family Resource Coordinator, to a Bridges Out of Poverty seminar. Based on another work by Ms. Payne, A Framework for Understanding Poverty, the Bridges seminar capti- vated our imagination about what might be possible at PCC if we integrated this framework into our mission. Our objective is to create an understanding of the dynamics that cause and maintain poverty from the individual to systems level. Nicole and Susan attended training in Louisville, KY and became certified to teach Bridges workshops, as well as companion Get- ting Ahead training for PCC clients. To date, we have held two six-hour Bridges workshops for PCC staff, board members, volunteers and community partners. Three additional sessions are planned for October/November 2018. In June, Nicole and Susan began the Getting Ahead Program at PCC to help individuals in poverty improve their lives by building resources and equipping themselves with the needed tools for sustainable success. Funded by a generous grant from Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, we enrolled 17 parents and graduates of Pathways for Youth. On Saturday, August 11, sixteen people with 100% attendance at the ten 3.5 hour classes graduated. The program was well-received, generating much conversation and research. We will track each graduate over the course of the next several years, hoping to chart their success as they seek to attain their goals. Two graduates will train to facilitate future classes. Getting Ahead has shown an 80% success rate for its students within the 400 communities running this program in the U.S. and other countries. We ask your prayers for the success of PCC Getting Ahead participants. The Blessing BoxCarilion Clinic contributes many beneficial services to PCC clients. These include annual flu shot clinics, and screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, skin can-cer and cholesterol. A special blessing came about last fall when Carilion employee Laura Blackwell reached out to the Presbyterian Community Center to share her idea of creating a “Blessing Box.” Her thought was to stock personal necessities in a place readily acces-sible to clients. Laura sketched the plan and along with her husband, David, built and painted the box which now resides in the PCC lobby. Since November, PCC clients and neighbors have been able to obtain soap, shampoo, deodorant, laundry detergent, socks, gloves and many other items to help with their needs. Caril-ion regularly collects and delivers goods for the box. Thank you Laura, and everyone at Carilion Clinic, for your thoughtfulness and generosity in providing these gifts to our clients.Note: In addition to Carilion Clinic, we send our sincere thanks to Colonial Presbyterian Church, Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, Kissito PACE, MedKey, Inc., Mar-cia and Michael Ridenhour, and Physicians to Women for providing items for the Blessing Box.

In Your Backyard Ministry Visits PCC

Colonial Presbyterian Church and Colonial Avenue Baptist Church made an energetic and productive team at the PCC during their 2018 inter-gen-erational summer event. Pa-rishioners from both churches spent an afternoon processing food for the pantry, stocking the shelves and even helping us further by recycling the ever-accumulating cardboard!

What a great school year in Pathways for Youth! Learning Bi-ble stories about Lent was a highlight for the elementary stu-dents. During the week before Easter, their projects included palm branch rubbings, baking Resurrection Bread, creating Nail Necklaces, and making bags adorned with symbols of Holy Week. Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church hosted the students for an exciting Easter Egg Hunt on the last day of school before spring break.Middle school students built their public speaking and re-search skills this year. In honor of Black History Month, stu-dents chose an African-American they admired, and then re-searched the life and accomplishments of the person. Each student then presented their work to Pathways’ staff and students. Everyone was impressed by the colorful artwork in many of the presentations, along with many interesting facts found by each student.“Harry Potter Day” was a special gift from the high school students to the elementary children last spring. After read-ing “Harry Potter” books over the summer, the high school-ers wanted to share the magical experience. Students spent several weeks preparing Diagon Alley, the Hogwarts Great Hall, and Ollivander’s Wand Shop. Wands, made of painted chopsticks and hot glue, were created for each child. On the big day, the first stop was Ollivander’s where the wand chose the wizard. After a sorting ceremony in Great Hall, students moved to their respective “houses” where they made their own ties. The afternoon ended with a trip to the Sweet Shop where fun treats, including licorice wands, Every Flavored Beans and jelly slugs were shared with all.As our newsletter goes to press, Pathways staff is busily pre-paring for the new school year. We can’t wait to see the new adventures awaiting our students.

A Magical Year for Pathways

Snapshot Memories

Students Explore New York CityEvery other year, a very special experi-ence awaits Pathways junior and senior students: the high school summer trip! Blessed by the gifts of very special do-nors, and after meeting grade, atten-dance and volunteer requirements, this year, senior Matthew Joseph and junior Crysten Shiflett visited one of the most exciting places in the United States: New York City. Along with their PCC chaperones, a special treat for them was

riding the Amtrak train from downtown Roanoke right into the heart of the city. While in New York, our students saw Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Museum, at-tended a concert and saw the Broad-way play, “Wicked.” After the play, they met several members of the cast backstage. Matthew and Crys-ten had a great time and both agree that NYC is a great place to visit, but Roanoke is the best place to live.

Count Your Skittles

At the PCC’s first Bridges Out of Pover-ty training seminar, Pastor Robert Stutes of Mt. Pleasant UMC, coined this expression, “Count Your Skittles,” while participating in an exercise to assess resources. Skittles were used as a colorful visual, distinguishing

various personal as-sets: financial, emotional, mental, spiritual, phys-ical, etc. Each participant in the seminar ranked their personal resources then discussed how these rankings compare with the resources of PCC clients. Karen McNally’s note, on the first page of this news-letter, shares more of this exciting, empowering en-deavor to better serve PCC clients and others in our community. Although not particularly a fan of Skittles, this ex-ercise has forever changed my point of reference concerning compassion, empathy and even in the record keeping of volunteer management. Monthly as I count my skittles, the most colorful resources at the PCC…PCC volunteers, I will smile broadly as I do now presenting the list of top volunteers and affiliates for 2017.
