Earlier this week I traveled to Fairfield, Iowa to visit the Creative Edge studio and 120,000 square foot plant where our marble floor medallions were designed and are currently in production. Robert Sawyer, our Creative Edge contact, traveled to Dickinson earlier in the year and has since invited me to Iowa to see our project being produced first-hand. I met numerous employees, including Cathy Alto with whom I worked to design our custom medallions. We worked together via email in the designing process and I enjoyed meeting her and the other employees who are producing our custom designed marble floor designs. The facility is quite impressive, especially the 12 machines that use a mixture of water and Australian garnet to cut the marble at 50,000 psi. Our project includes Spanish marble and custom cut bronze for lettering and boarders. Interestingly, the foot traffic on these medallions will keep the bronze polished! The most complicated medallion is that of CHARITY which features a pelican. In fact, in the transfer to “finish” the design, they lost a dime size piece which they had to recut. To the left you will see both the initial design rendering of FAITH, along with a photo of the completed design—stunning! FAITH is the only marble medallion we have yet to memorialize. If you are interested in this beautiful memorial option, please contact Nancy at the Parish Office. Also during my visit to Iowa, I spent time in Cedar Rapids, home of the largest group of Czechs outside of Prague. I stopped to see two different St. Wenceslaus churches, one in Cedar Rapids and one in Iowa City. My time in Iowa was memorable! ~Msgr. Patrick A. WHAT IS THE HUMAN LIFE AMENDMENT? The Human Life Amendment is a proposed amendment to North Dakota’s state constitution. Passed by a bi-partisan majority of the Legislature, the amendment provides that, “The inalienable right to life of every human being at any stage of development must be recognized and protected.” The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot in November as Measure 1 and if approved by a majority of voters will become part of the state constitution.

PRAYER BEFORE AN ELECTION (November 04, 2014) Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our city, state, and country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, Men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom. We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

ND Choose Life’s FACTS ON NORTH DAKOTA’S PROPOSED HUMAN LIFE AMENDMENT

BACKGROUND—ND voters will have the opportunity to enact the proposed Human Life Amendment this November. The proposed amendment was passed by a bi-partisan majority of both the House and the Senate of the state legislature and will appear on the November ballot as Measure 1.

PURPOSE—Reflecting our community values and supporting life and the belief that abortion is morally wrong, North Dakota’s Legislature has passed a variety of strong, common-sense pro-life laws. These include ensuring that women are given full disclosure of information prior to an abortion, making sure parents are notified if their daughter is seeking an abortion, and prohibiting children who are partially born from being killed by an abortionist before their birth can be completed. The wealthy abortion industry regularly challenges North Dakota’s pro-life laws and attempt to persuade judges to invent a state constitutional right to abortion as a way of overturning these laws.

IMPACT ON OTHER LAWS—By itself, the proposed Human Life Amendment enacts no new statue and changes no existing law. Rather, it provides constitutional protections to pro-life laws that are enacted by the Legislature by making clear that the inalienable right to life of every human being must be recognized and protected.

DID YOU KNOW… Measure 1 does not mandate any government body to do anything. Measure 1 does not ban anything, but it does protect laws that affect abortion and will prevent abortion groups from undermining our state constitution. Experts in end of life care have soundly rejected claims Measure 1 will impact end of life care. AARP does not oppose Measure 1. Claims that Measure 1 will ban IVF or treatment of ectopic pregnancies are false. Arkansas and Missouri have very similar laws to Measure 1 and IVF is practiced in those states. Over 96% of the money for the opposition to Measure 1 comes from out-of-state abortion lobby. Over 99% of ND Choose Life’s contributions have come from North Dakotans.

St. Wenceslaus Parish will remember and honor our deceased (09/24/13—09/11/14) at

the 4 pm Mass on All Souls Day, November 02.

DID YOU KNOW? The Catechism defines purgatory as a "purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven," which is experienced by those "who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified" (CCC 1030). It notes that "this final purification of the elect...is entirely different from the punishment of the damned" (CCC 1031). The purification is necessary because nothing unclean will enter the presence of God in heaven (Rev. 21:27) and, while we may die with our mortal sins forgiven, there can still be many impurities in us.
