    Centauri Republic Fading GloryBy 2230, The Centauri Republic was in turmoil Emp eror Deraini had just died,perhaps through poison and the Great Game of poli tics and intrigue was at itsheight as the Noble Houses attempted to establish a pecking order. The Narnwere growing in power, watching their ancient oppressors with barely concealedfury for signs of weakness. The Gorash Star System was once again, to be aflashpoint between the two races.

    The Centauri fleet of this period used far less of the then unreliable battle lasers and retained much more confidence inthe sheer weight of conventional firepower that they could bring to bear on an enemy. Captains of larger ships such asthe Primus or even the gigantic Octurion were able to treat themselves as mobile fortresses. With heavy weaponry on allsides, and defensive turrets and fighters ready, these metal giants could sail carelessly into the centre of an engagementdrawing fire away from the more fragile hunting flight packs circling the outer edges of a conflict.

    Fighters like the Razik and the newer Sentri were rarely used to attack enemy vessels due to their lack of punch, butrather dealt with enemy attack craft. Great dogfighters, supremely agile in the hands of the right pilot, they were fragileand could not withstand much damage. Clouds of Sentris could theoretically hinder larger vessels, but most Centauripilots were more interested in duelling with enemy pilots than making suicidal charges at capital ships.

    When the Dilgar began their invasion of the League, the Centauri Republic was already embroiled in a growing conflictwith the Narn. Unbeknownst to them this was part of a plot by the Dilgar, who with the co-operation of elements of theKhaRi looked to divert any attention from their invasion. This was more a final safeguard than anything else as the Dilgarwere well aware that that the Centauri were very unlikely to provide any assistance to either their former slave races orthose that had successfully resisted them in the past.

    Centauri Republic Fleet Tactics Bonus: +2, Command Distance: 6

    Beam weapons: Roll 1D6 per AD, if this is equal or higher than the target vessels DR than it inflictsa hit. If the roll of the dice is a 5 or 6 it inflicts both 1 hit and a critical hit but do not re-roll the dice.This type of weapon is not affected by PD but is affected by Shields. Beams can not be linked withnon beam weapons.

    Altarian Class Destroyer, Capital Class, Medium Siz e, 45ptsA deadly craft with a well-earned reputation for lethality, the Altarian was an older design dedicated to the matter cannonsthat grace its hull. While Centauri military sciences officially stopped working on matter-related weaponry decades ago,the ones in service on the Altarian and many other designs still functioned quite efficiently.

    Balvarin Class Carrier, Capital Class, Carrier, Lar ge Size 75ptsOne of the largest ships in the Centauri Republic, a Balvarin carrier was an effective warship in its own right and capableof commanding an entire battle with its extensive control deck. In fact, some Admirals of the fleet preferred to take theircommand tours aboard a Balvarin instead of the Primus or Octurion most were assigned. When a Balvarin opened itsbay doors and released its fighter compliment, the entire tide of a battle could change in the Centauris favour.

    Centurion Class Attack Cruiser, Capital Class, Medi um Size, 50ptsA relatively small ship for its class, the Centurion earned its reputation for swift, deadly strikes in hostile territory in morethan three hundred years as a design. The Centurion was equipped with the same venerable matter cannon that theAltarian, a similar vessel, also carries. It boasted more firepower than the Altarian, but was not as long ranged and sooften had to settle for brief skirmishes rather than lengthy campaigns.

    Corvan Class Scout, Small Ship, Scout, 30ptsOne of the smallest fully active capital ships in the Centauri Republic, the Corvan was well armed and lightly armouredwith the ability to pour fire into an unwary enemy vessel. The Corvan was the stealthiest ship the Centauri had producedand while not as untraceable as a vessel the Minbari might field, it proved very well hidden from most sensors.

    Dargan Class Attack Cruiser, Capital Class, Medium Size, 80ptsThe Dargan was designed with swift assault runs in mind. Built on a classic Centauri hull, the Dargan was fast, agile andcarried enough firepower to make its lighting attack runs devastating. It was often in the first wave of ships to penetrateenemy space as a commerce raider, usually in concert with Demos class raiders.

    The Flames of Li, a Dargan class cruiser was one of several Royal Navy warships that carried outreconnaissance missions into Narn space after the battle of Gorash. Lord Amaris Durnadocommanded the ship on several long missions which much more success than his youngercounterparts.

    On his return to the Court, the reluctant recognition of his deeds by the Emperor gained him manynew friends and a new wife.

    Demos Class Raider (Vorchan Variant), Small Ship, 30ptsAn update of the Vorchan, the Demos featured a lighter, but more flexible, weapons fit and was used primarily as acommerce raider, though it proved fully capable of facing larger warships when organised into squadrons. The Demoswas a favourite among young nobles looking for quick opportunities for glory.

    Haven Class Patrol Boat, Small Ship(*) 10ptsA small ship charged with a huge responsibility, the Haven was a valuable ship to any system and fleets of them patrolledthe remaining major worlds of the Republic on a constant state of readiness. Haven crews were a mixed group; manywere wary and alert to any danger than might enter their territory, while others served their entire careers and neverengaged an enemy ship.

    Kutai Class Gunship 15ptsThe Kutai gunship design was based on alien technology that explained its odd shape but had long since beencompletely rebuilt using Centauri materials and equipment. A deadly vessel with more than enough guns to make adifference in an assault, it was more often used to lend support to larger ships than engage targets on its own.

    Maximus System Defender, Small Ship, 20ptsA one-ship system defence fleet, no other design had been attributed with the successful repulsion of attacking forcesfrom Republic space more often than the Maximus. A well designed defensive vessel with just enough firepower to keepits enemies at bay until help can arrive from the rest of the fleet, this ship was built to take a pounding and proved itsworth on hundreds of occasions.

    Maximus Class Frigate, Small Ship, Escort, 30ptsThe original version was a durable and well-armed brawler, easily capable of engaging superior number of raiders andwhich proved its worth across the expanse of the Republic and beyond. This later incarnation of the Maximus wasdesigned to act as a fleet defender, shielding the capital ships of the republic from enemy fire.

    Magnus Class Destroyer Capital Class, Medium Size, 45ptsDesigned by House Jaddo at the height of their power to demonstrate prestige within the Centarum, the revised weaponlayout allowed small changes to be made to engine efficiency. The effectiveness of the Magnus destroyer over theoriginal Altarian was a subject of many debates among Centauri nobles, especially those within House Jaddo.

    Marcanos Civilian Base The Marcanos bases was found throughout known space, usually no longer inthe hands of the Centauri. Durable and well designed, they provided substantialliving space coupled with excellent medical and maintenance facilities.

    Octurion Class Battleship, Capital Class, Large Siz e, 180ptsThe Octurion was a massive vessel, the largest in the Centauri fleet, and served many roles. It was a mobile firebase, aplanetary bombardment ship, a command centre for an entire battle group, and anything else its firepower and auxiliarysystems would support. An Octurion present in an area automatically makes it the fleets command ship and it was rareto see two Octurions in the same sector of space. The latest version of the venerable battleship saw it being equippedwith new long-range torpedoes to engage enemy cruisers at range.

    Primus Class Battlecruiser, Capital Ship, Large Siz e, 100ptsSecond only to the Octurion class battleship, the Primus remained a testament to the might and power the Centauri oncewielded in the galaxy. One of the strongest front line vessels found among the younger races, Primus class battlecruisersmounted powerful beam weapons and devastating batteries of Ion cannons, permitting them to engage almost anyenemy with a good chance of victory.

    The flagship of the House Mollari fleet, the Pride of Immolan, had served for many years in theCentauri Royal Navy and still retained the mass driver rails. Its vast hanger bays had been rebuiltand converted into a sophisticated command and control centre which allowed the House Patriarch tocommunicate fully with his holdings whilst commanding the fleet. As befitted the chosen conveyanceof the head of House Mollari, its fittings were more than sumptuous and its crew extremely welltrained. It had a number of battle honours from both its Navy days and more recently from its serviceto the Noble House. Following the victory at Gorash, it spent much of its time in that system co-ordinatiing a series of raids on the Narn border worlds and then helping organise the response totheir retaliatory strikes.

    Razik Light Fighter Flight (standard Interceptors)The forerunner of the Sentri, the Razik was rarely seen in frontline fleets though some Admirals still favoured it. Itpossessed a greater agility to the Sentri but remained inferior in nearly every other way, making it unsuitable whenmatched against most frontline fighters of other races. However, when crewed by veteran pilots the Razik can mount afearsome defence of Centauri warships.

    Sentri Medium Fighter Flight (standard fighters)The mainstay of the Centauri fighter fleets, the Sentri sported the crescent wing the Republics craft were renowned for,and carried rapid-firing particle guns. Whilst they lacked the raw firepower of Narn fighters, they often gained the upperhand in combat engagements due to superior manoeuvrability, accuracy and speed.

    Sulust Class Escort Destroyer, Capital Ship, Medium Size, 55ptsIn combat against the Centauri, a number of races learned to screen their more valuable command ships with smallerescorts. This shielded the fleet vessels from the powerful guns and battle lasers of the Republic fleet. Rather than wastetime and energy ripping these smaller craft apart with battleship and battlecruiser class weapons, escort destroyers werecalled in to shatter these defensive lines and punch a hole through which the Centauris bigger guns could deal with theirpriority targets.

    The Balvarin class fleet carrier was the epitome of Centauri strength and weakness. A huge vessel,it was luxuriously appointed and provided its officers with every luxury. The ability to co-ordinatebattles with sophisticated communications equipment in comfort, meant that senior officers, who hadoften lost their lust for charging the enemy, could frequently be found using them as their flagvessels.

    Consequently its formidable ability to carry fighters to support and defend the rest of the fleet becameincreasingly secondary. This was in stark contrast to the integrated carrier, warship and fighteroperations that were such a hallmark of Dilgar and EarthForce fleets. With only major capital shipscarrying their own fighters, it was fortunate that the Royal Navy had not had to engage in anyconflicts with either race. Stories were also told of at least one Centauri admiral converting one of thetwo cavernous hangers into a grand ballroom.

    This glaring issue would not be fully addressed until well after the war and this was due significantlyto good relations with Earth and some horribly embarrassing joint manoeuvres.

    The Centauri were not alone in using the Balvarin, several ageing examples had been sold to theBalsoians and the Narn had captured one Balvarin intact when they liberated their homeworld.Whilst it had hanger bays full of fighters which would serve the Regime well, the carrier previouslyknown as the Exultation of Kiros was ripped apart by its badly maintained jump engine whilstattempting to leave the home system on manoeuvres. The Narn blamed Centauri spies and claimedit was sabotage, whilst the Centauri predictably countered by pointing to Narn ineptitude. In truth,whilst the Narn had trouble with some of its systems, the engine had been in a terrible state eversince they had seized it.

    Virlisi Logistics Ship, Capital Ship, Large Ship,The process of becoming a "Lion of the Galaxy" forced the Centauri to make some early realisations - one of these wasthat logistics, while unglamorous and boring, was an absolute necessity. The Virlisi Logistics ship was just that,unglamorous and boring in its un-Centauri like bulk but vitally necessary to ensure the Republics war machine remainedeffective.

    Vorchan Class Warship, Small Ship, 25ptsLooking much like the Centauri bird of prey it was named after, with its beak-like forward cabin, the Vorchan mounted adeadly plasma accelerator as its main gun with powerful ion cannon batteries for stopping power and effective shortranged attacks. In larger battles, Vorchans usually amassed into large squadrons, utilising their speed and incredibleagility to flank enemy fleets and pound them into submission as the main Centauri fleet begins to engage.
