DITH REFRACTORIES

DITH Refractories (formerly known as Duferco Refractories) was formed in 1999 and is the specialised brand applied by the DITH Group for its production and distribution of refractory products.

The roots of the success of DITH Refractories lies in its two decades of experience in key sectors such as steel, non-ferrous metals, and cement and lime. Over 350 customers worldwide rely on the DITH Refractories brand and product range.

The quality of DITH Refractories products is constantly monitored by a team of specialised ‘in-house’, Duferco engineers coordinated by the DITH Beijing office and the Duferco Head Office in Lugano (Switzerland) to ensure that the product portfolio is constantly monitored and evolved to meet the most exacting demands of the industry. Over the years DITH / Duferco has built strong commercial relationships by supporting the leading Chinese producers with both capital investment and the exchange of technical and operational expertise.

As a result of these strong partnerships, DITH Refractories has the exclusive right to source and distribute refractory products from a selected number of its preferred high quality Chinese producers.

Both DITH Refractories and all its producers are ISO accredited (9001:2008). DITH Refractories supports its customers by providing:

Cement and lime plants belong to those thermal industrial plants operating a counter-current process at temperatures higher than 1200°C. Thus, the refractory lining:

› Must be resistant to the process conditions which include: chemical attack & erosion, thermal shock, abrasion and mechanical stresses.

› Must be a good insulator: this is to protect the operating equipment and also to reduce heat & energy losses.

The Importance of the Refractory Lining in the Cement & Lime kiln

The current rotary kiln environment is becoming more chemically aggressive with the increasing use of secondary or waste fuels. The refractory bricks:

› Must have good volume stability at the operating temperature and exhibit low permanent linear change and low expansion or shrinkage.

› Must be cost effective.

The objective of the Engineers at Duferco is to propose a lining using our products, which is able to meet all of the design constraints shown above.

The SPINMAG family of magnesia spinel products is based on carefully selected premium grade raw materials, including fused magnesia/magnesia-spinel, chosen for their ability to produce a range of products able to meet the demands of the modern Cement & Lime Producer.

SPINMAG88 is the premium grade within the range utilising the most purest and most technically “tuned” of raw materials which includes very high purity fused grades. This product is normally used in the most arduous areas of the kiln tube, in particular the upper and lower transition zones and also often in the burning zone, if the operating conditions are more demanding.

SPINMAG85 is also a premium grade product. A modified raw material mix yields a more cost effective formulation which is still able to meet the most demanding conditions. This product has been used in all the of the basic kiln zones and is strongly recommended as a second choice when the SPINMAG88 grade has been used but an upfront cost reduction is required.

SPINMAG83 is a magnesia spinel grade for application in the burning zones of kilns with stable coatings and it has also found application in the safety zone.

SPINMAG87H is a special magnesia hercynite spinel grade for application in the burning zone. It is extremely coating friendly.

SPINMAG82S is an ultra-flexible product with an increased spinel content designed for more mechanically stressed areas.

COOL SHELL TECHNOLOGY

This innovative patent protected “Cool Shell” technology is based on a brick which is manufactured with two distinct zones or layers. The back face of the brick is engineered to enhance its insulation properties thanks to raw materials with lower bulk density and increased porosity whilst still maintaining its refractory properties to retain its integrity and security.The hot face of the brick is unchanged and reflects the same high standard of quality and performance as a standard product.The two parts of the CS brick are held together by a strong ceramic bond, equivalent in strength to all the bonding throughout the brick and has been proven to remain intact, after very long production campaigns.

ALUMINO SILICATE PRODUCTS

Duferco Refractories has the ability to supply a complete series of Alumino Silicate products with a range of alumina contents from 30% to 85%, with either a fired or chemical bond and with a multitude of special additions in order to meet the special conditions of the environment they are to be used in. Coupled with this is the ability to make special as well as the standard ISO series of brick shapes means that these Duferco products can find application in many areas both within and outside the kiln tube.

To complement the main lining refractories supplied by Duferco Refractories we can also supply compatible accessory mortars both to assist in the installation and also for areas of the kiln which may require a mortared lining.

Mortars

Duferco Refractories is committed to providing comprehensive technical services to its customers. This is realised by an experienced team of engineers who are readily available to support their customers. Technical services include:

› Analysis of the operation and practices of the plant, evaluating the current refractory performance to develop and improve the lining design to give the most economic lining concept.

› Study of both clinker and brick samples for accurate kiln zoning.› Product development in order to supply tailor-made solutions to different customers.

As a result of the long term experience of Duferco Shipping SA and an extensive professional team, DITH Refractories is able to guarantee short lead time and punctuality for all deliveries. The creation of dedicated material stocks in the main market areas also guarantees on-call deliveries to our customers.

Bricks are supplied with a colour code indicating the size range (as above). The shape of the coloured mark is also used to represent the brick quality, in the illustration a four points star shape is used for SPINMAG88 quality only. Each quality has a specific shape code. A groove on the hot face in used to allow for an easy visual inspection of the installed brick lining. The marking system follows the guidelines of ISO9205. The bricks can also be supplied with an expansion cardboard glued onto one face.

Packaging options

As another option for adverse climatic conditions and/or for extended periods of storage, the packaging type can be improved by the additional use of hermetically sealed aluminium/locked foil which is finally shrink wrapped (9). This improved packaging system has been found to give extended storage lives providing that it remains intact and the warehouse is dry and properly ventilated.

INSTALLATION GUIDELINES PNEUMATIC RIG METHOD

Installation Guidelines Pneumatic Rig MethodBEFORE THE INSTALLATION:

› When using a 2 taper system, try and work with a ratio as close as possible to 1:1. Order brick shapes accordingly, with an over- allowance to accommodate for changes from the theoretical build ratio.

› Make sure the kiln shell is clean – remove any scale or old lining debris.

› Mark perpendicular lines, at least every 5 metres, as a guide to make sure the new lining is installed properly.

› Mark the positions of the new lining qualities.› Choose/ make decisions on whether you want

a bonded or in-line build, expansion allowance and mortared sections.

DURING THE INSTALLATION:› Make sure the lining is being built

perpendicular - refer to the guidelines marked on the shell.

› When using a 2 taper system build to the practical not the theoretical ratio.

› Make sure all the bricks are in contact with and held firmly against the kiln shell.

› Use a suitable mortar for alignment correction or “tipping” of the lining.

› Remove any broken or damaged bricks.

CLOSING OF THE RINGS - A CRITICAL AREA:› Use the correct jacking pressure, normally a

maximum of 50% of the material CCS value (25 to 35 MPa).

› Use a minimum number of key bricks of a matching or superior quality.

› Disperse any key bricks over the closure arch - do not install them all together.

› Use a minimum number of key plates - normally 3 per ring is the maximum allowed.

› Use only 1 shim plate per brick joint (2 or 3 mm thickness).

› Do not install a shim key plate next to a small key brick.

› If possible it is preferred that a shim driver is used rather than a large hammer as this is less likely to damage the lining.

› Again disperse any shim plates required over the arch. You don’t have to use a shim plate if the lining is sufficiently tight with bricks alone!

› Again any broken or damaged bricks should be removed.
