    CEM Courses

The Vecellio Construction Engineering andManagement Program (VCEMP)

Course Number Course NameCEE 3014 Construction Management

Fundamental elements involved in managing construction projects. Management structure, construction contr acts, equipment andlabor productivity, scheduling, quality assurance, and cost control.

CEE 4014 Estimating, Production and Cost Engineering

Interpretation of plans and specifications, preparation of construction estimates, and cost control. Methods analysis, resourcerequirements, and resource costs in building systems, including system components, and in large-scale civil engineering works suchas highways, bridges, and hydraulic structures.

    CEE 4024 Construction Control Techniques

Techniques used to plan, schedule and control the construction process. Emphasizes manual and computer-based approaches.Focuses on an analytical approach towards the construction process whereby good technical methodologies and solutions areconverted to reality through construction practices.

CEE 4064 Designing for Hazard Control in Construction

Design of construction projects and systems to control inherent hazards to the health and safety of construction workers, inhabitantsof the built environment, and the general public. The course will provide students with in-depth knowledge of the regulatory and legaldrivers pertinent to construction, the chemical and physical health hazards, the major classes of safety hazards, analysis tools, andsafety management processes.

CEE 4074 Construction Means & Methods

Construction means, methods, and equipment used to transform a particular design concept into a completed usable structure or facility. Selection and optimization of individual units as well as the systems needed to produce the required work to the requiredquality on time and on budget.

CEE 5010 Schedule Impact Analysis Analysis of construction scheduling principles, scheduling specifications, contract administration, construction law, construction delayclaims, and of accepted methodologies for performing schedule impact analysis of delaying events. .

CEE 5014 Facility Delivery & Financing

Delivery and financing of constructed facilities with an emphasis uopn civil infrastructure systems. Design of project delivery systemsto encourage best value, innovation, and private sector participation. Public-private partnership strategies and factors that contributeto success or failure. Fundamentals of project feasibility, evaluation, and finance. Case studies of large-scale infrastructure projects.

CEE 5024 Contract Administ ra tion and Claims Resolutions

This course provides students with a knowledge of the different types of contracts used in civil engineering construction. Contracts areviewed as documents which assign responsibilities and allocate risks and emphasis is placed on contract administration as the firststep in reducing costs and easing the burden of dispute resolution. Techniques for quantifying and resolving claims are studied.

    CEE 5054 Construction Performance Improvement

Skills for productivity improvement in construction, with special attention to techniques used to record and analyze operations asrequired to develop and implement efficient and rewarding methods. Consideration of the human factor in generating andimplementing commitments to productivity improvements.

CEE 5064G Design for Hazard Control in Construction

Design of construction projects and systems to control inherent hazards to the health and safety of construction workers, inhabitantsof the built environment, and the general public. Regulatory and legal factors pertinent to construction, chemical and physical healthhazards, major classes of safety hazards, design processes and specificiations to control safety and health hazards, systemengineering risk analysis tools, and safety management processes.

    CEE 5080 Infrastructure Asset Management

Comprehensive systems approach to civil infrastructure system and strategic-level asset management with emphasis on municipal, highway, building, Dam, and bridge infrastructure. Course will cover various aspects of strategic-level infrastructure assetmanagement: systems thinking, needs assessment, information technology and GIS data management, risk and reliabilityengineering, multi-criteria decision-making process, infrastructure sustainability and resiliency, demand forecasting, and renewalengineering.

CEE 5084 Information Technology for Infrastructure and Environmental Systems

With the acceleration of the process of global revolution in science, engineering and technology, led by information technology, thehuman society is in a gradual transition from an industrial society into an information society. As a new productivity with the greatestpotential at the present age, information technology has undergone great development. The incessant innovation in technology hasalso urged people to make better use of it and apply advanced information technology to their own industry. In recent years,Information Technology (IT) and Cyber Infrastructure has been transforming engineering and business practices in many sectors, resulting in efficiency gains and improved services for the client. The infrastructure industry has been slow to utilize informationtechnology effectively and slower still to grasp the ways in which the multitude of design, calculation, specification, projectmanagement, asset management, sensor technology, database and data analysis software applications relate to each other. Thiscourse provides an overview of the range of Information Technology (IT) applications available to the civil and environmentalengineering professional throughout the life cycle of a project, from data collection and analysis through software, projectmanagement, environmental impact analysis, visualization, and infrastructure asset management.

Applicable regulatory requirements and sustainability organization recommendations will be reviewed.

CEE 5984 (Fall 2014) Civi l Engineer ing Network DynamicsThis course is designed to acquaint students with approaches to model the interconnections between (i) the people that live in, obtainresources from, and travel across infrastructure, and (ii) the infrastructure over which these activities take place. A practical approachto understand the myriad of connections that exist between people and infrastructure is to understand and analyze them as networks. In this course, we will examine civil engineering network dynamics from both a theoretical and a practical perspective. Theoreticalperspectives will be conveyed through discussions of published works on civil engineering network dynamics. We will discuss thepractice of applying network dynamics to civil engineering phenomena through assignments. The theoretical and practical elements of the course will be synthesized in the completion of a semester-length network dynamics modeling project.
