Word 2007 for academic users

Welcome to the course

Introduction

This course is aimed at academics of all levels who wish to brush up their Word 2007 techniques and skills. It is a technical course and not intended to teach you how to write, only how to improve the layout of your work.

IntroductionDuring the course you will be shown various methods to tidy the format of your academic work and to make it more manageable and legible.Because each user is working in different disciplines, submission requirements will differ.Nevertheless, learning the methods available gives students flexibility to work in the unique manner they require.

What will you be learning? The essential elements that you will be learning will be:• Opening and saving Word documents• Formatting text• Applying a style to your document• Tables of contents, figures and tables• Other useful methods

Why?Formatting a piece of work does not, in itself, get you extra marks. What it does do is:• Demonstrate a structured & controlled approach• Make work more readable• Make navigation more easy• Take control of the more tedious or involved

tasks (such as tables of contents)• Gives you more time to worry about the content,

not the format

ContentThis course consists of several types of content, such as text, videos, presentations and quizzes. Whilst it is not essential to take part in all parts of the course, it is advised. Each element is small, is designed to be short & builds on the knowledge of the previous module, so you are advised to take a few minutes to review each part.

RequirementsThe only technical requirements for this course are internet access via PC, Microsoft Office &, of course, a piece of work to apply your methods to.The course is hosted on the university’s Moodle package, & if you are reading this it means that you have been given a user id & password.

Video contentNote that video material on this course has no audio narration. Users are likely to be using this course in the library, where audio is discouraged. It also reduces file sizes (& bandwidth use) substantially.Because of this, users may wish to pause the video periodically & rewind.
