Mr M Butterworth

Since graduating from Edinburgh University, Mark Butterworth trained extensively in plastic surgery, spending time at Canniesburn Hospital in Glasgow, two years in Adelaide (Australia) and six years in London, including six months at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children. He returned to Edinburgh in 2001 to take up his post as Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust as well as at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. He is a full member of BAPRAS.

In the private sector, he specialises in cosmetic facial rejuvenation surgery and cosmetic breast surgery in addition to body re-contouring surgery and liposuction, including post extensive weight loss surgery. He also has extensive experience in non-surgical treatments for facial lines and provides a mole and skin cancer service, including the treatment of malignant melanoma. He has lectured extensively in cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery both in the UK and overseas.

In his role as an NHS consultant, Mr Butterworth specialises in the treatment of breast cancer patients undergoing reconstruction and in the surgical treatment of malignant melanoma. His outside interests include art and sailing.

After graduating from Oxford, Dominique’s SHO training took her to Bath and Bristol, where she gained her first taste of plastic surgery at Frenchay Hospital. She returned to Oxford for a period of research into molecular genetics, (achieving a Hunterian Professorhip, a DPhil and a fondness for golf). Her registrar training on the Pan-Thames rotation took her to Chelsea and Westminster, St George’s and East Grinstead. There was a slight hiatus when she sustained bilateral Colles’ fractures/TFCC avulsions during a five-a-side football game against the St George’s orthopaedic department. However, her subsequent operations at the Windsor Hand Clinic piqued an interest in hand surgery, and she stayed on there as Hand Fellow to consolidate her training.

At this point Cupid struck, and after meeting and marrying a Scot, she became the first (and only?) trainee to request an inter-deanery transfer out of London. Canniesburn took her in to complete her final years of training, but she subsequently transferred east to become a hand consultant in Edinburgh. There she considers herself extremely lucky to be able to indulge her interests in Dupuytren’s disease and applied anatomy, whilst enjoying the company of supportive colleagues and excellent trainees.

Mrs D Davidson

Mr Amer Durrani is a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, working at Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge since 2007, and has been the surgical lead for skin cancer for the last nine years. Mr Durrani introduced the technique of sentinel lymphnode biopsy for malignant melanoma in Cambridgeshire, having trained in this procedure in London and Scotland.

He has recently started offering the novel technique of electrochemotherapy to patients with troublesome skin metastases resistant to other treatments, to complement the metastatic melanoma service that is provided. He is also a core member of the head and neck cancer multidisciplinary team, undertaking major free flap reconstructions for the service and is in the process of setting up an SLNB service for intra-oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Mr Durrani is involved in a number of clinical trials in regard to the management of various skin malignancies including melanoma and Merkel cell carcinoma.

Paul Harris BSc MD FRCS(plast)Paul Harris is a well-known and established plastic surgeon based in Central London. His main area of interest is aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery.

After training, Paul worked for 15 years at The Royal Marsden Hospital specializing in cancer reconstruction. He developed the microvascular breast reconstruction service there and undertook over 1100 DIEPs. He also lead a research team into gene therapy manipulation of free flaps and became Medical Director of the hospital’s private care division. Since leaving the Royal Marsden and the National Health Service, Paul has directed his efforts more towards aesthetic breast surgery, particularly gaining a reputation in secondary surgery to correct cosmetic breast problems following surgery elsewhere.

Paul has published widely on both aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery. He is also regularly invited to lecture Nationally and Internationally. He is the UK National Secretary for ISAPS and the current President of The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).

By a miracle of good fortune Ken obtained a medical degree in 1990 and proceeded to postgraduate training in surgery and plastic surgery predominantly in Scotland but with ‘overseas’ stints in Sydney, Toronto and London. (He understands that there is no sea between London and Edinburgh but he would like to create one!). He was appointed as a consultant in Edinburgh in 2002 and progressed anatomically northwards to focus on facial reconstruction and in particular ear reconstruction. He was privileged to spend time with the great and the of ear reconstruction including Brent, Nagata, Firmin, Jiang, Wikstrom and of course Gault. In 2006 he established a nationally designated ear reconstruction service for Scotland.

Ken is now held in check by a multidisciplinary ear reconstruction team who offer predominantly cartilage based and occasionally porous polyethylene based reconstructions as wel as middle ear implants to restore hearing.

He collaborated with UK colleagues to write the BAPRAS/ENTUK UK Care Standards for Microtia and Atresia. He was a founder member and treasurer of the International Society for Auricular Reconstruction (ISAR.cc) and has hosted and helped run several of the international ear meetings. He has also taught and performed live surgery and many international workshops on ear reconstruction including Oman, India and Vietnam.

In addition to his NHS practice he is active in aesthetic surgery focusing predominantly on facial aesthetics. He Royal College of Surgeons were recently kind enough to certificate him in aesthetic surgery under their new scheme.

Ken is also an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh and has written or co-written a number of academic papers academic papers focusing on plastic surgery outcome. He would thoroughly recommend his papers to anybody caught short in a small room.
