Theory

• The Wacky Cell Theory • So, the Cell Theory states:• All organisms are made of cells• All existing cells are produced by other living

cells• The cell is the most basic unit of life

Virchow

Hooke- the 1st to identify and name cellsLeewenhoek- made better lenses so was able to see cells in greater detailSchleiden-found that plants are made of cellsSchwann- concluded that all living things are made of cellsVirchow- proposed that all cells come from other cells

Cells

• Prokaryotic Cells

Page 5: Cells

Cells

• Prokaryotic cells do NOT have a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles. The DNA is suspended in the cytoplasm. All prokaryotes are

microscopic single cell organisms.

Page 6: Cells

Cells

• Eukaryotic Cells

Page 7: Cells

Cells

• Eukaryotic Cells have a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. The nucleus is the

largest organelle and encloses the genetic information. Eukaryotes may be multicellular or

single celled organisms.

Graphic Organizer

• You make it…..NOW. • Move over to the lab tables• find a spot and • make a graphic organizer according to your

notes• Use the “butcher” paper provided • Put your name, date, class period at the top.

Organelles

Cytoskeleton

• You and your partners will add this information on all the organelles in class and the best of the PP slides will be posted here.

Page 12: Cells

For Example Golgi Apparatus (Body)

• Consist of closely layered stacks of membrane enclosed spaces

• Packages proteins• Sorts and stores some of them for later• Transports others to other organelles in the

cell

Cells in Comparison

•How SMALL is a cell anyway?

Page 14: Cells

Why are cells so ….well…. small?
