    MitosisMitosis(mi toH sus)

is the second main stage of the cellcycle during which the cellsreplicated DNA divides and twogenetically identical diploiddaughter cells are produced

ProphaseProphase First stage of mitosis during

    which the cells chromatin

    condenses into chromosomes

    The chromosomes appear as Xs

each side of the X is called sister

    chromatids. Which are structures

    that contain identical copies of

    DNA

The structure at the center of the

    chromosome where the sister

    chromatids are attached is called

    centromere.

    Centromere ensures that the

copied DNA becomes part of the

daughter cells at the end of thecell cycle.

    Spindle apparatus contains

    spindle fibers, centrioles and aster

fibers. It is important for moving

    and organizing chromosomes

before cell division. Centriolesare not part of the

    MetaphaseMetaphase

    Second stage of mitosis in

    which motor proteins pull

sister chromatids to thecells equator along the

    spindle apparatus.

    Metaphase is one of the

    shortest stages in mitosis

    when completed

    successfully it ensures

    that the new cells have

    accurate copies of the

    chromosomes.

AnaphaseAnaphase The third stage of mitosis

    in which sister

    chromatids are pulled

    apart and microtubules,

    along with motor

    proteins, move the

    chromosomes to opposite

    poles of the cell.

    Spindle apparatus

    begins to shorten which

    pulls at the centromere of

    each sister chromatids,

    causing the sisters to

    separate into two

    identical chromosomes.

TelophaseTelophase The last stage of mitosis

    in which nucleoli

    reappear. Two newnuclear membranes begin

to form, but the cell has

    not yet completely

    divided.

    Chromosomes arrive at

the poles of the cell and

    begin to relax or

    decondense.

    the fourth stage of

    mitosis is now complete

    and there nuclear

    material is divided, the

    process of cell division is

    not yet complete.

CytokensisCytokensis Third main stage of the

    cell cycle, during which a

    cells cytoplasm divides,

    creating a new cell.

    results in two cells with

    identical nuclei.

    accomplished by using

    microfilaments toconstrict, or pinch, the

    cytoplasm.
