Maryland Science Content Standard(Cell Division)

• Based on research and examples from video technology explain that the repeated division of cells enables organisms to grow and make repairs.

What You Know

• Plant cells make foodPhotosynthesis

• Plant and animal cells create energy from the food (glucose) they make (photosynthesis for plants) or eat (animals consume)

Cellular Respiration• Plant and animal cells replicate (divide) in order

to grow, develop and repair with the energy produced during cellular respiration

How Do Cells Replicate?

• Review– Read Cells and Heredity:

• Chapter 2: Section 3 – Subheading “Structure and Replication of DNA”

When You Are Complete

• Using the manipulative kit, read ALL of Part 1– (introduction, procedures and replication of

DNA)

• Define in your notebook:– Phosphate bond– Nucleotide– Nitrogen base– Deoxyribose sugar

Summarize

• In your notebook, summarize the directions. Underline the important parts. What did the directions tell you to do?

• If a student did not read the directions carefully, what do you think the student may do in place of the correct direction? Explain why.

Construct

• Now, following directions, begin building your DNA ladder.

• Have your DNA ladder checked before moving on.

• After your DNA ladder is corrected, continue following directions (very important) to replicate the DNA strand.

Final Thought

• In completing this activity, what concept was demonstrated?

• What is the outcome of cell division?

• Why is cell division an important cell function?
