CATALYST AWARDS DINNER!Welcome to this year’s
the United States, I am deeply honored to follow Ilene H. Lang as the steward of Catalyst’s mission. I am also very excited to welcome you to my first Awards Dinner as Catalyst’s President and CEO.
We’re here tonight to celebrate two initiatives that are helping to transform not just the workplace, but the world. Women’s advancement benefits entire societies. When women succeed at work, they gain economic power and personal independence, and the impact on their families and communities through increased earnings and income can be profound.
Kimberly-Clark’s Unleash Your Power: Strengthening the Business With Women Leaders is a unique, enterprise-wide global initiative designed to address the company’s need to look, think, and behave like the people who use and buy its products.
Lockheed Martin’s groundbreaking initiative, Women Accelerating Tomorrow, comprises a variety of programs, processes, and tools to support women’s advancement as part of a broad strategic effort to attract, develop, and retain diverse talent in a highly technical and engineering-focused industry.
Both initiatives demonstrate how critical it is to invest in women—not just because it’s good for business, but because doing so will help guarantee a better future for all of us.
To the bold visionaries who pioneered these programs, and to those who work every day to ensure their continued success, I offer thanks and congratulations.
I’d also like to thank Ilene, Peter Voser, Chair of Catalyst’s Board of Directors, and the women and men in this room for your hard work and inspiring leadership. Together we can ensure women have the opportunity to advance—and help create a more just and sustainable world for everyone.
As Catalyst’s fourth president in 52 years, and the first from outside of

For over half a century, Catalyst has shown organizations how to capitalize on an increasingly diverse global workforce by advancing talented women. And every year since 1987, we have honored groundbreaking initiatives designed to do just that with the prestigious Catalyst Award.
Tonight we celebrate our 2014 Catalyst Award-winning initiatives in the company of nearly 1,600 guests, including CEOs and other top executives from leading organizations. This year’s inspiring initiatives were developed by companies wishing to make change—not wait passively for it to happen.
The programs we’re celebrating tonight demonstrate that everyone wins when women are encouraged to aim for the top—and equipped with the tools necessary to get there. We’re proud to honor the following initiatives:

Kimberly-Clark’s Unleash Your Power: Strengthening the Business With Women Leaders is a global, enterprise-wide initiative to address Kimberly-Clark’s need to look, think, and behave like the people who use and buy its products. The initiative, which highlights the important role women play in the workplace and marketplace, was launched in 2009 as Kimberly-Clark began implementing a new people strategy to transform the culture and engage talent who will lead the company to success. With the understanding that diversity and inclusion lead to stronger and better results, the initiative seeks to drive diverse talent into influential roles across the company.
Specific goals of the initiative include increasing women’s representation at all levels by hiring and promoting more women into critical roles globally, strengthening the pipeline of women, and nurturing regional and business action plans to accelerate the recruitment, development, and retention of women. Managing talent around the world and across business lines is core. For example, the company designed its high-potential talent pool to reach across businesses and geographies so it could more easily leverage the talent and experience of both women and men. Talent development tools such as the Accelerated Development Program support the movement of employees across the organization and increase access to “hot jobs.” In addition, high-potential employees may take on a three- to six-month “swap” assignment in another country. Additional efforts include peer-to-peer and reverse mentoring opportunities; a fully integrated FlexWork program with a variety of options such as telecommuting, flexible hours, compressed workweek; and communication tools to support a highly engaged culture. Finally, the initiative includes external programs to empower women and girls through resources, community outreach, and other corporate social responsibilities activities.
UNLEASH YOUR POWER: STRENGTHENING THE BUSINESS WITH WOMEN LEADERS
Kimberly-Clark Corporation
Unleash Your Power: Strengthening the Business With Women Leaders was successfully implemented and integrated across Kimberly-Clark’s global locations (Asia, Latin America, North America, and Western Europe) and its operating businesses. In order to achieve this, Kimberly-Clark developed an overarching framework at the global level and provided local leaders with tools to customize the initiative to meet regional and cultural needs. For example, operations in China and Malaysia include a strong focus on retention because attrition is a major concern there; in the United States, where Employees Resource Groups (ERGs) are most active, ERGs serve as an efficient talent management resource, helping with professional development, recruiting, and retention.
Thanks to these efforts, Kimberly-Clark has seen solid results for attracting, developing, and retaining women. Between 2009 and 2013, women’s representation among Director+ roles has increased globally from 19.0% to 26.0%; internal promotions of women to Director+ jobs has increased significantly, from 19.0% to 44.0%. Additionally, women’s representation on the Board of Directors has increased from 16.7% to 25.0%.

Lockheed Martin’s U.S.-based initiative Women Accelerating Tomorrow comprises a variety of programs, processes, and tools to support women’s advancement as part of a broad strategic effort to attract, develop, and retain diverse talent in a highly technical and engineering-focused industry. In the early 2000s, Lockheed Martin recognized that a diverse and inclusive culture could be a competitive advantage and, in fact, was critical to the company’s future success. Lockheed Martin understood that in order to continue providing innovative solutions to meet customer needs, it had to attract, engage, and leverage a wider range of talent. This set the company on a deliberate journey to create a sustainable workforce for the future by making diversity and inclusion an integral part of the business strategy.
The initiative includes both internal and external components, and it is guided by five strategies: • Building a diverse and sustainable STEM pipeline through a variety of educational and recruiting efforts. • Engaging leaders, with an emphasis on men, through inclusion workshops and training, such as the Effective Leadership of Inclusive Teams (ELOIT) labs and summits. • Establishing strong talent management systems and processes and promoting employee engagement through networking and development events, such as the Women’s Leadership Forum, regional forums, and Leadership Development Programs. • Promoting supplier diversity through programs that enable small, disadvantaged, women- and veteran-owned businesses to become Lockheed Martin’s suppliers. • Establishing feedback mechanisms to track and inform diversity strategies, impact, and transparency, with tools such as the LM Voice employee survey.
WOMEN ACCELERATING TOMORROW Lockheed Martin Corporation
Diversity and inclusion are woven into the fabric of expected leadership behaviors and actions, and performance management systems look at the “what” (i.e., results) as well as the “how” (i.e., behaviors). All leaders and employees are held accountable for both their results and behaviors and are expected to contribute to creating a more inclusive work environment. In addition, managers with more than five direct reports receive feedback from employees through the LM Voice employee survey, which is then used to build action plans for improvement.
A key to the initiative’s success is how the diversity strategy is integrated into Lockheed Martin’s three core values—Do What’s Right, Respect Others, and Perform With Excellence—and ethical principles. Diversity goals are also aligned with broader corporate sustainability efforts. A strong focus on ethics, transparency, and consistency of the messaging across the organization is instrumental in reaching employees in various locations, including those working at remote customer sites.
Lockheed Martin’s efforts have accelerated progress for women at all levels and across businesses. Despite a decrease in Lockheed Martin’s overall workforce between 2004 and 2013, women’s representation in the exempt population increased during that period from 19.8% to 23.6%. Among senior executives, women’s representation grew from 16.7% to 21.7%, and for director-level employees it increased from 16.0% to 19.5%. Additionally, women’s representation on Lockheed Martin’s Board of Directors has surged from 13.0% to 33.0%.

The Catalyst Award attracts organizations from around the world. Every
year, Catalyst identifies and receives applications from companies of all
sizes, regions, and industries, whose groundbreaking initiatives to advance
women and diverse groups make them eligible for the Award.
Focusing on diversity and inclusion (D&I) is a strategic imperative for global
organizations. Catalyst research has shown that corporations that invest in
women gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
By applying for the Catalyst Award, your company or firm will:
• Benefit from an external perspective on your organization’s culture
and D&I efforts.
• Showcase your internal and external strategies, talent, and progress.
• Learn how to continuously improve your efforts.
• Show your commitment to being an employer of choice.
