Being headquartered in San Antonio, Texas comes with many advantages, however not having a surplus of qualified talent is a disadvantage. Our leadership position requires that we “get it right” when it comes to our talent strategy. Building a local talent pipeline and retaining talent is essential for scale. This session will highlight Rackspace’s involvement in supporting local initiatives to attract, develop and retain top tech talent.

Lessons Learnt Surfing the Digital Transformation Wave

Gartner Research predicts that by 2020, 75% of business will be a digital business or preparing to become one. Digital Transformation is the number one priority for many CEOs and it is crucial that HR positions itself to be a key driver in this business revolution. Matt Alder has spent the last 20 years being digitally disruptive, working in three different industries that have been turned on their head by digital transformation. In this presentation, Matt will share five relevant lessons for HR practitioners that he has learned (often the hard way) from his experiences.

Ever since he first worked with the web back in 1997, Matt has been fascinated by the emerging technologies that change the way companies go about recruiting people. Today – some 19 years later – he is recognised as a highly influential recruitment futurist and industry-leading digital, social and mobile strategist. Matt’s ethos is simple – in order to shape your future as an employer, you must better connect with the talent you need.

Data for Good, Data for Evil & the Aggregation of Everything

We live in a data driven world. Digital footprint has never been more important as we enter a period of the aggregation of everything, where people stop looking for content like jobs or employer branding posts and jobs and content look for people. We need to consider how this will challenge our talent strategy. Bill Boorman will share observations, thinking, technology and a new “moral” HR approach to the world in which we live. Expect plenty of surprises.

Bill is a recovering recruiter, having spent close to 35 years in and around recruiting. He is a serial writer and commentator, and works with talent technology start-ups to build great technology, implement new technology and change the way they hire. He always wears a hat and never wears a suit, and is known for not holding back with a view for fear that it might be controversial.

How Mobile is Changing Everything!

Mobile phones are one of the great success stories of the world and nowhere is this more evident than in Africa. More people in Africa have a mobile phone than access to electricity. This talk explores how Africa’s 1.1bn people are using mobile technology which is leapfrogging older tech and enabling a new way of doing things. Companies that don’t adopt a mobile strategy are going to be on the outside looking in, as innovation (from mobile money to ride-sharing) becomes the new norm for doing business. Africa is not just mobile-first, it is a mobile-only continent.

Toby writes and speaks about how innovation is better in Africa. His TED talk on how Africa is solving real problems has had over 1,4 million views and he’s been featured in the New York Times. Toby is the editor-in- chief and publisher of Stuff Magazine, a contributor to Forbes, writes a weekly column for the Financial Mail and co-hosts a weekly TV show on CNBC Africa. He believes Africa is a mobile-driven continent and is writing a book on innovation in Africa. He has interviewed a range of tech industry luminaries, including Apple co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.

The Workplace Revolution: Changes Today Creating a Different Tomorrow

Technology is rapidly altering the workplace as we know it and the big shift is on. In this keynote session, Google SA Country Director, Luke McKend, will be addressing the impact that technology has had and will continue to have on the world of work, and in particular, how consumer technology advances will continue to revolutionise the workplace as we know it.

A graduate of Stellenbosch University, Luke has been involved in the Internet industry since 1998. He then moved to London where he worked for Monster.com during the dotcom boom. He joined Google in 2007 where he was originally responsible for growing Google’s UK business in the Classifieds sector. He returned to South Africa as Country Manager in 2011. Through his roles at Google he has worked with many of the UK and SA’s largest businesses helping them develop strategies for getting the most out of the web. When not at work, he spends time with his family in Johannesburg and is an active cyclist.

The Future of Talent Acquisition

Matt alderChief Strategist, Metashift (UK)We live in changing times. The rise of social media, the growth of mobile and the unprecedented speed of development of new recruitment technology has meant many employers have had to radically rethink their approach to talent acquisition in recent years. Trends such as automation, predictive data analytics, artificial intelligence and virtual reality are set to provide further opportunities as well as bringing further complications. This presentation will make sense of the changing landscape and provide practical takeaways that will help you adapt and evolve your talent acquisition strategy.

A Match Made in Heaven: Keeping Your Vendor Marriage Happy

Sarah MooreGroup HR Systems Manager, JBS Australia (AUS)By building and maintaining strong relationships with the local representatives of global and local vendors, we have achieved good results for our HR Transformation program. Communicating regularly and honestly with our vendors has helped them understand our business objectives and to deliver products and services that our business needs. The strategies used can be applied to many vendor relationships and is built on mutual respect and understanding.

Screen Wars: The Battle for Integration

Bill BoorManManaging Director Innovation & Technology, RecruitingDaily & #tru (UK)The days of one tech provider offering the solution have long gone. The HR tech stack has become disjointed, with a real need for one data flow, simple integration and a single screen for each user to log in to, and the needs of users are often very different to the needs of the buyers. You got the great disconnect? In this presentation, Boorman shares some war stories of building something unified that keeps everyone happy and shares a crazy vision based on the popular game Minecraft. Hold on to your hats and expect a few surprises.

Saving a Floundering System Implementation: From Nowheresville to Nandocaville…olivia hoSieHead of Talent, Organisational Development & Change Management, Nando’sBuilt on the premise that one never needed to attend training in order to build a profile and interact on technology platforms like Facebook, technology these days needs to be intuitive and almost invisible in order for it to be successful. Our journey at Nando’s describes a classic example of fit-for-purpose, much-needed technology missing the mark on adoption and how we turned that around in a fun, engaging and enticing way - which put the power in the hands of the users.

Employee Advocacy: with the Help of Technology, your Employees can become your Brands Biggest Advocates

Caroline BernSHead of Talent Acquisition: Sub-Saharan Africa, Ericsson South AfricaMore and more companies are understanding that their employees social media use is actually not evil, but that with the help of technology, employees can actually be transformed into their brands biggest advocates, driving brand awareness and supporting recruitment while having a positive impact on employee engagement. Ericsson launched a pilot in 2015 that turned out to be so successful, that in 2016 they decided to roll it out globally. Caroline will share their journey, lessons learned and the benefits of such a programme.

The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) aims to alleviate poverty and provide income relief by offering short- to medium-term work opportunities. The City of Cape Town needs to ensure that we pay our EPWP workers on time and comply with governance and legislative requirements. The EPWP SAP project was initiated to manage in excess of 20 000 direct EPWP workers per annum sustainably on SAP HCM. This was enabled through the City’s ERP vision and mission to bring Strategy, Processes, Operations and Technology together to improve the City. The project has an organisation wide impact and its success is dependent on commitment and involvement from all areas of the organisation. A transversal team representing all the areas across business and IS&T worked together to deliver a SAP HCM solution from Organisational Management through to Personnel Administration and Payroll in eight months. We will dive into the key contributors to our successful implementation.

razeen BaguSICT Manager, ArcelorMittal South AfricaBeing a legacy and heavy-industry type organisation, the agile roll out of a complete and new HR system meant that we encountered many implementation challenges. From automating manual HR procedures to developing high level and insightful reports, this session will focus on our implementation and roll-out success and our hind-sight lessons learned.

Winning the Online Adoption Battle

Sandy taSMan Managing Director, Kalleo Performance Partners, Kalleo People GroupIt is not a case of: “If you build it, they will come”. World-class technology and eLearning can fail dismally, and does frequently. Ensuring online adoption is far more about smart people engagement and targeted marketing than it is about quality technology and content. To succeed, online adoption needs to nail it in all three areas - engage & entice, support & encourage, reinforce & retain. We’ll look at numerous case studies to show this done poorly and done well.

Beyond Traditional HR: Maximising Engagementronnie toerienHCM Sales Development & Strategy Leader – Africa, Oracle CorporationToday’s fast-paced changes in business and the pressure for increased productivity, innovation, and profits have taken a toll on both employees as well as employers. Employees feel more and more disengaged and believe that the only way to advance may be to leave the company, but are worried about prospects and likely disruption in their lives. Employers are worried that productivity is not increasing fast enough, that they are losing the war for talent, and are looking for new ways to retain top performers. How do we take advantage of the Social revolution to engage employees?

Workforce of the Future

Bavini naidooManaging Executive, AccentureAs the world evolves, organisations need to purposefully reconsider and transform the what, how, who, and why of work. Have you considered the following: What work is performed? How work is organised? Who performs the work? How work is led and managed? Why people work and how they are supported? In this topic we will look into the concept of the Liquid Workforce and how technology and digital HR can be harnessed to address imminent challenges facing the HR Director, such as Human-Machine collaboration, continuous learning and edge-centric decision making.
