Celebrating the acceleratorsPrairies Awards Gala 2016
Disruption is a powerful force. It impacts every industry and organization in some way. Those who recoil from disruption risk being left behind, but those who embrace it are poised to thrive.
While many people see disruption as trouble, entrepreneurs seize it as an opportunity. After all, seismic shifts not only shake the earth, they build mountains. Entrepreneurs are builders — they’re innovators and accelerators who drive growth and inspire, empower and shape the world with their ambition.
I’m glad you’re joining us this evening to help us celebrate these extraordinary people. I know you’ll be as inspired by the stories you’ll hear this evening as I am. Because when we shine the spotlight on high achievers, it drives the next generation to build an even better world.

EY is honouring the Wheaton Family with the Family Business Award of Excellence. When Don Wheaton Sr. started in the car business in 1955 in Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan, he had big dreams. Now, 61 years later, both the second and third generations of the Wheaton family are running their many business interests across Canada.
From their reputation as a leader in customer service and quality to their longstanding community support with the United Way and The Wheaton Family YMCA , the Wheaton Family embodies the entrepreneurial and philanthropic values that make our communities great places to live.
The Wheaton brand grew as a result of hard work, dedication and incredible patience. When Don Sr. bought his first dealership in Edmonton in 1961, General Motors had a rule that one person could only own one. But the owner of a Calgary dealership wanted to sell, and Don had built a good relationship with GM leadership. The company made an exception and allowed Don to buy a second dealership.
Over the years, Don’s children and grandchildren have become part of the family business and helped it grow and maintain its strong foothold in Canada.
As one of the largest dealer groups in Canada, with dealerships today from Nanaimo to Regina, the Wheaton family business interests have diversified across Canada into real estate, insurance, aviation and banking. The First Canadian Insurance Group is the largest underwriter of automotive creditor and warranty insurance in Canada. The family is co-owner of Morningstar Air Express, the carrier for Federal Express in Canada, operating daily flights between all major cities from Victoria to Halifax. In 2005, the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions issued Canada’s first privately held Schedule 1 Bank Charter to the Wheaton Family. Today, General Bank of Canada remains Canada’s only privately held bank.
