Rich Thoughts from the Executive Director

Greetings family and friends,

Well, March was not quite what we thought it was going to be like but, then again, weren’t

we taught as children not to count our chickens before they hatch? Point is sometimes the

more we plan, the more we discover that we really are not in control of tomorrow’s sunrise.

Reminds me of a story about a group of experienced, rough and tough fishermen, out on their

regular hunt for fish when they came upon a storm and they were all fearful even though they

were seaworthy veterans. Yet one fisherman, if you can believe it, slept during the storm. The

other fishermen were yelling for him to get up and help them endure this storm. He smiled

and said to them, “Relax, storms will come and go but look to one another and rely on what I

have taught you.” And with those words, the storm had passed.

Folks, we are in a storm and we must remain calm and rely on one another and what we have

been taught to endure the storms of life. Many of our seniors have endured great storms like

the Great Depression, WWII, other wars, polio, and many other diseases. They stand before us

today as reminders that this too shall pass.

The COA will be on duty throughout this storm and the others to come. We will be your rock

that you can count on for support and be your beacon of hope if you ever get lost at sea.

Communicate with us through email, social media, like Facebook, or call us at 7521717 if

you need us for anything. We’re here for you.

Blessings,

Rich

Physical Therapy Healthy Aging Minute

WWPTD? If you ask a friend what a physical therapist does, then

you will likely hear something related to muscles, moving, or walk-

ing. These are all good answers & important to healthy aging.

Try this: Can you stand up from a chair without using your

hands? If not, then it is very possible that the muscles in your legs

have gotten too weak. Muscle weakness can improve with some

simple exercises.

Why is muscle weakness so important? Your muscles need to re-

main strong enough to help your body move, they help your pos-

ture & breathing, they also provide stability & protection for your

bones. Muscle weakness is a major risk factor for falls & we all

want to avoid those.

The PT will be visiting the five COA Senior Centers in April for

free healthy aging screens with a focus on muscle strength testing.

He will have some safe & simple exercise handouts that you can

learn.
