The heart of Growing in Grace is the music. The songs appearing in each unit have been carefully written to ensure they are developmentally appropriate for the child, both theologically and musically. With understandable texts, singable melodies, and interesting accompaniments, these songs will help each child develop his or her natural singing skills, increase in musical knowledge, and grow spiritually.

The theme, Be Strong in the Lord, is founded on Ephesians 6:10. Songs and musical activities reinforce the scriptural truths of having courage, being patient, enduring hardships without giving up, loving God and others, and experiencing God’s grace.

This curriculum package includes two CDs with demonstration and accompaniment recordings, abundant teaching materials, and colorful visuals. Song Teaching Steps offer easy-to-follow instructions and activities for groups of all sizes. Additional resources are available online at www.growing-in-grace.com.

New Curriculum Feature: PrintReady• PrintReady folders contain multi-page visuals that

have been combined into one full-sized image. The images are ready to print on large-format printers or to import into multi-media presentation software.

Oo,

*NARRATOR: So one day, Jesus gave a sermon on a mountain. He told stories that people could relate to, but they really had deeper meanings. We call these stories parables. He finished this whole sermon by telling this parable about the wise and foolish builders. Jesus said, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who builds his house on sand . . . it fell with a great crash.”

SONG TEACHING STEPS

“The Wise and Foolish Builders”

Be Strong in the Lord Fall—Older © 2016 Celebrating Grace, Inc. All rights reserved.“The Wise and Foolish Builders” Song Teaching Steps, page 1

1. Listen and move. • Move to Demo #, using the following movements.

° Stanza 1—Snap high to the right and low to the left on the offbeat (beats 2 and 4).

° Stanza 2—Turn your body slightly to the right, and step right, touch left, step right, touch left. Make a scooping or digging motion with hands as you step. Repeat the other direction.

° OO Interlude—Sway back and forth, moving hands, palms down, side to side at waist level.

° Stanza 3—Pat legs twice, touch left shoulder with right then right shoulder with left hand. Repeat.

° Last measure—Raise and freeze jazz hands.

• Have the children do the Building on a Solid Foundation Sound Story from the activity.

• Let children discuss what they can do to build a solid foundation for their lives.

2. Teach Stanza 1.• Display Consonants Visual. Have children speak the words several times in

the following manner:

° Speak the unvoiced column of words then the voiced column of words slowly and precisely.

° Repeat, speaking the words more quickly.

° Speak an unvoiced consonant word then its coordinating voiced consonant word, an unvoiced consonant word then its coordinating voiced consonant word, and so forth, very quickly all the way down the chart.

• Distribute Student Pages.

• Echo speak measures 5-8 in rhythm by phrase, over-pronouncing consonants and forming open vowels while snapping on the offbeat. Emphasize good AH vowels on wise, man, house, rock, and block while pronouncing crisp, clear consonants.

• Echo speak measures 9-12 and 13-16 in like manner.

• Echo sing each phrase, using crisp, clear pronunciation of consonants and open vowels.

• Explain that even though this song is fun to sing it contains an important truth

that Jesus taught and needs to be understood.

• Call attention to key words on the board. Ask children to place their Student Pages on the floor beneath their chairs and try to sing Stanza 1 by using the key words only.

• Play Demo # through measure 16, and have children sing while snapping on the offbeat.

• Echo sing to correct problems with melody, rhythm, or text.

• Play Demo # through measure 16 as all sing.

• Ask someone to explain why building on the rock is important. (The rock is referring to the truths that Jesus taught. The house being built refers to our lives. If we build our lives on the Word of God and the truths that Jesus taught, we will be able to make it through the worst times and the best times.)

• Have volunteers read Psalm 18:2, Psalm 95:1, Ephesians 2:19-20. Ask someone to explain who is being referred to as the Rock in these verses. (God/Jesus)

• Play Demo # through measure 16 as all sing.

3. Teach Stanza 2.• Play Demo #. Have children sing Stanza 1 by looking at key words on the

board as they snap on the offbeat. Lead them to do the movements from Step 1 on Stanza 2 and 3.

• Distribute Student Pages.

• Ask children to look at Stanza 2 and tell how it is different from Stanza 1. (About the foolish builder, some rhythms are different because of text, answer to the question is Yes! instead of No!, foolish man is not smart.)

• Echo speak, then sing measures 17-20 and 26-28.

• Play Demo # through measure 28. Have the children sing Stanzas 1 and 2, looking at their Student Pages.

• Ask children to place their Student Pages on the floor beneath their chairs and try to sing Stanzas 1 and 2 by using the key words only.

• Play Demo # again, and have children sing Stanzas 1 and 2 then listen to Stanza 3 as they perform movements for all three stanzas.

William Williams (1717-1791) William Williams has been called “the sweet singer of Wales.” For forty-three years he traveled thousands of miles on horseback, preaching and singing the gospel. Williams was a powerful preacher who wrote over 800 hymns. “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah” has been translated into over 70 languages. John Hughes (1873-1932) John Hughes was born in Wales. By age 12, he worked as a “door boy” in the coal mines, spending long hours opening and closing doors for miners. Hughes eventually worked his way up to clerk for a mine in Rhondda Valley. He was a member of Salem Baptist Chapel, where he was a deacon and song leader. Hughes composed the hymn tune CWM RHONDDA, (pronounced koom rrhawn-tha) for a singing festival. CWM RHONDDA means Rhondda Valley, which was a mining valley in Wales.
