A Message from the SESSC Executive Director and Board President

Dear Members and Friends,

We continue to be amazed by our staff at the SouthEast Seattle Senior Center!

In May, the staff completed a grant application to King County that would approximately double our

budget for the next few years. The application included 18 pages of narrative describing our current

challenges, the proposed solutions, and plans for expanded programming and facilities. Two spread-

sheets of budget summary were submitted, but were supported by 11 other spreadsheets for the

different categories in the budget.

All this was accomplished by the staff in just a few weeks while still performing their normal job re-

quirements and keeping the Senior Center activities and classes operating as usual. The application

was prepared in conjunction with the Brighton Apartments. Receiving the grant would mean an ex-

panded relationship with The Brighton Apartments and their residents. We will know more by early

fall and are anxious to share details with you at that time.

We would also like to officially welcome two independent contractors to our family. Many of you

have already had the opportunity to meet Carla Bunn who is working with us in the capacity of Pro-

ject Coordinator. We would also like to welcome Victor DeLeon who will be with us as an independ-

ent contractor in the role as Assistant Finance Coordinator. When you see Carla or Victor, please

welcome them to our family!

Have a wonderful summer,

On Monday, May 20, 2019, the SESSC implemented the Center

Ambassador program! Members of the program will be availa-

ble to welcome guests and new visitors, whether the guests are

attending a special event or visiting to learn about SESSC events

and activities. Their goal is to present a friendly and warm face

to someone who is new to our Center and/or to infrequent visi-

tors. Ambassadors want to make sure everyone feels welcome

when they come to our Center. We never want anyone to leave,

feeling as though no one cared about them. And keep in mind,

all staff, members and regular participants are ambassadors of the

SESSC. Any one of us could encounter a visitor to the Center at any time and

should be prepared to welcome them with a friendly and warm smile.

Ambassadors can be spotted wearing their name tags, as shown in the pic-

ture above. They are (from left to right in the picture on the top left) Lynda

Greene (Executive Director), Sidney Carter, Fai Coffin, Diana Tobin and

Deana Getz. Beulah Early and Myra Theriot are Ambassadors, but were not

available for the photo.

If you have a question about the Center, and you see an Ambassador, feel free

to ask them. If they don’t know the answer, they’ll find out for you! If you are interested in being a

Center Ambassador, please see Lynda Greene. All are welcomed.

giveBIG 2019! giveBIG 2019!

On Wednesday, May 8, the SESSC partici-

pated in giveBIG 2019, a 501 Commons

sponsored city-wide event to donate to non-

profit organizations. Because of the gener-

osity of our contributors, the Center raised

over $5,000! As you know from previous

communications, all proceeds go toward

programming, building operations and mak-

ing sure we have what we need to support

our seniors! In addition to raising the funds,

it was a day of great fun, as is indicative of

the photos. Many seniors, including Deanne

Hart (center) and Sidney Carter (right) took

to the streets to remind the community that

our seniors need their help. Remember, the

Center relies on the generous contributions

from the community. And, it’s never too late

to give BIG!

Center Ambassadors!

SESSC volunteers invest their time, hard work, and loving care and are committed to forming a strong communi-

ty and welcoming culture at our Center. They keep us strong. Here we highlight just a few volunteers who keep

our Center going:

THANKS VOLUNTEERS - WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!

Volunteer Corner

Nancy Steers - Nancy is the new Front Desk Receptionist on

Monday afternoons! Nancy comes from a broad range of

experience and has already jumped right in and is swimming

fine! Thanks Nancy for holding down this important position

for our center.

Margaret Thompson - Margaret is our neighbor across the

street and she has joined the team at the Cheap Chickadee.

She is quite and asset and helps spread the word about the

store too.

Marjorie Croston - Marjorie is bringing back a beloved activity

and is sharing her leadership skills and love of the practice to

bring back Tai Chi! We are so pleased to have this class again.

It is helpful with balance and more.

Walter Tuai - Walter is our photographer for events and activi-

ties. His ability to capture excellent photos is a super-skill and

a gift. He is also very kind and funny.

Kyle Moss - Kyle helps with dishwashing - an important job no one wants so we are truly grateful. Kyle lives in the neighbor-

hood and comes over on Fridays. So if you see him, be sure to tell him thanks!

By the time you read this newsletter, there may be another new volunteer in the house.

Be sure to extend a warm welcome and thank you, including those not listed above. Let’s keep it going strong!

We need your HELP, ESPECIALLY with the Community Dining Lunch Program

Community Dining Lunch Program: Because participation

in our lunch program has grown dramatically, Sharon Smith,

our Master Chef, needs help in the kitchen with a variety of

tasks, like food preparation and dish washing. One of the

perks of being a volunteer in the Community Dining Lunch

program is that you don’t have to pay for lunch!

Special Events: One of the ways the SESSC is able to provide

the activities you enjoy is by raising money through our various

special events such as the Lifetime Members appreciation

event, Annual Wine and Food Gala and Rainbow Bingo. Be a

part of the group that truly makes it happen at the SouthEast

Seattle Senior Center.

Wednesday Bingo: We need volunteers for Bingo! Help ver-

ify a winning bingo, sell specials, or call numbers.

Cheap Chickadee Thrift Shop: Be a part of the team that plays

a major role in providing revenue for the Center. Remember,

the store is open Monday - Thursday 10:00am-2:00pm.

Birthday Lunch: We need two volunteers to devote two

hours of their time setting up for the birthday lunch on the

third Wednesday from 3:00pm - 4:00pm and cleaning up after

Reception: We have openings for the Monday PM reception-

ist shift and a substitute receptionist. As a receptionist, you

are the face of the Center. If you have a friendly demeanor

There are other volunteer opportunities available. Stop by Kate Harkin’s office or call her at

206-722-0317 to find the volunteer opportunity that is right for you.

New idea to try: volunteer with a friend to make it even more fun!
