Creative Green, a framework for sustainability action, represents an international community
of pioneering cultural organisations driving change. With over 250 certificates awarded since
its launch in 2009, Creative Green remains the only environmental certification designed
specifically for the creative and cultural sector.
Creative Green offers venues, museums, galleries, festivals and offices a transparent,
methodical and inspiring framework for achieving environmental best practice, and as a forum
for recognition and celebration. It supports organisations’ environmental impact reductions
through its three strands: Commitment, Understanding and Improvement. Points are
accrued within each strand and a one to five star certification is awarded based on the total
number gained.
The methodology of Creative Green follows best practice and international standards for
measurement, reporting and reduction of environmental impacts and has been designed in
partnership with arts, cultural and entertainment organisations. The continuing emphasis on
carbon emissions reductions align the Creative Green community to the ambitions of the
Paris Agreement, reached at COP21 in 2015, to keep global temperatures well below 2
degrees of warming.

Part of the London Theatre Consortium, Battersea Arts Centre has made a commitment to lead
by example in sustainable business and production. Their sustainability vision is driven by the whole
team, and deeply aligned with their collective commitment to community and to nurture the
creativity of everyone. This sustainability vision is presented on the centre’s website, which includes
an environmental policy and Creative Green report from Julie’s Bicycle. Battersea Arts Centre’s
environmental policy was at the core of their Capital Project’s tender information and has remained
a key guiding component of design decisions. An Artist Sounding Board routinely covers
environmental impacts affecting the centre, and sustainability also features in blog content and
social media.

Bush Theatre has embedded sustainability at the heart of its new capital development project, which
will increase theatre capacity by up to 20% once it reopens in Spring 2017. This includes installing
new double glazing throughout the building, re-insulating the roof for increased energy efficiency, and
creating a new green sedum roof over the auditorium to create a micro-habitat to encourage local
biodiversity. Their key procurement decision to source 100% of their energy from the renewable
supplier Good Energy has led to a smaller carbon footprint, complemented by the installation of a
new series of solar voltaic panels onto its roofs.

THEATRE “Wherever possible, we try to commit to the highest standards of sustainable
operation in our activities and to minimise the impact of our activities on the
environment.”
Madani Younis,Artistic DirectorBUSH THEATRE
Sustainability plays an integral part in both staff roles and building infrastructure, which has
included energy-saving initiatives such as a condensing boiler with hot water heaters on timers and
improvements to the building fabric in the form of new sensors. Camden Arts Centre continues to
demonstrate its commitment to sustainable operations by making the switch to an energy supplier
who sources 95% of their energy from renewables, while also keeping track of their impact in terms
of water use, waste diversion, energy efficiency, and business travel. Their major capital development
project operated on a core of environmental sustainability and laid the blueprint for these
innovative steps forward in green operations and design.

Festival Republic, part of Live Nation, is the leading UK festival promoter running a significant number of
the UK’s major iconic festivals. Demonstrating their deep commitment to sustainability, now seven of
these festivals (BBC Hyde Park, Download, Latitude, Leeds, Reading and V Festival (Chelmsford and
Staffordshire) are doing Creative Green – making them the largest creative group working to to
embed these sustainability principles into the core of their business. They recognise the important
role they have in demonstrating exemplary practice and to connect with their large audience.
As a member of Powerful Thinking, Festival Republic collaborates with other festivals,
organisations, and companies to ensure innovation, knowledge and learning are replicated and
scaled.

With a focus on original work, Gate productions bring global concerns to life through theatre. As a
member of the London Theatre Consortium, the Gate has adopted a ‘Green Gate’ environmental
policy and action plan which is clear in its scope and specific to the theatre’s small scale, and sits in
a significant place in the theatre’s Business Plan. Staff actively share sustainable ideas, challenges, and
information, including running monthly green challenges. The Green Gate policy is communicated
within contracts for Creative Teams, as well as featured in welcome packs for all actors and
creatives.

GATE THEATRE
“We are so proud that our ‘Green Gate’ activities take centre stage, and directly affect how we think about our work, our planning, and our relationships with each other and
our community.”
Ellen McDougall, Artistic Director
A leading producing theatre in the UK, Lyric Hammersmith has committed to reducing its carbon
footprint each year through a comprehensive environmental policy. Despite doubling floor area through
a major recent capital development project that saw the expansion of existing perforance facilities, Lyric
managed to reduce energy use by 73% compared to the previous year. A dedicated green team and
Lyric’s 21 Days of Action campaign around COP21 engaged staff in the sustainability conversation
and how they could reduce their ecological footprint. #LyricLent is the theatre’s current internal
engagement campaign which sees staff undertaking a series of collective and individual actions to
reduce their environmental impact.

THEATRE
LYRIC HAMMERSMITH
“For the Lyric the certification process provides us with a clear and consistent
framework to assess our performance and progress over time.”
Sian Alexander,Executive Director
With a detailed environmental policy and a staff green team, the General Manager, Technical Manager,
and Environmental Champion all engage theatre staff in implementing green initiatives. The theatre
as a whole has moved to multi-stream recycling, locally sourced food and drink, new energy efficient
boilers, and a 100% renewable energy tariff. Norwich Theatre Royal actively leads its community of
stakeholders in reducing environmental impacts and maintaining momentum through operations
and the production process. Staff actively participate by leading strong communication campaigns
through the Creative Green booklet, noticeboards, sharing of environmental performance
indicators, WWF Earth Hour, Open Day and ongoing engagement with suppliers.

THEATRE “Creative Green gives us a good base to work from and focus our attention on the areas that really need improvement instead of working at what we are already good at.”
Helen Tully,Front of House ManagerNORWICH THEATRE ROYAL
A recent large capital development project refurbished performance spaces with new LED lighting,
implemented a new building management system and photovoltaics, and created a new green space
in the form of a staff garden area. Sadler’s Wells worked with Julie’s Bicycle to evaluate the energy
and carbon savings achieved from the capital project. Sadler’s Wells has developed a green code of
practice for procurement resulting in procuring environmental products and services with strong
environmental credentials such as being on a green electricity tariff, using a green taxi company
and the house wine being voted “Sustainable Wine of the Year”.

Recognised for cutting edge theatrics and performance, as well as being a think-tank of
ideas, Shambala is an award winning green event. Julie’s Bicycle is proud to have been part of
Shambala’s sustainability journey through lending expertise, professional development and
partnering on development of sector leadership. In the past five years Shambala has
reduced its energy footprint by four-fifths and is now 100% renewably powered. A wide range of
community partnerships include Energy Revolution, Frank Water (with £5,000 raised last year for
water projects in India), Eighth Plate, Temwa, Raw Foundation, GoCarShare, and Oxfam. Green
Teams onsite encouraged sustainable action on the part of festivalgoers, and innovative green
messaging promoted Shambala’s first meat- and fish-free year.

As a cultural hub on the Strand, Somerset House aims to embed sustainability across organisation.
Shortlisted in 2016 for an Efficient Building Award, a new combined cooling, heating and power plant
now produces around 63% of all electricity at Somerset House. The 2016 Utopia Festival incorporated
sustainability throughout a year of creative programming looking at imagination and possibilities.
They are currently working with Julie’s Bicycle to develop a comprehensive sustainability strategy to
minimize the environmental impacts of operations and exhibitions, as well as amplify the work of
their creative community actively engaging with the themes of climate change.

creative responses to climate change.”
Jonathan Reekie, Director of Somerset House
Theatre Royal Stratford East’s environmental policy comprehensively maps out impacts and areas
of commitment to reduce those commitments, complementing the theatre’s environmental action
plan. This plan addresses both the targets and potential barriers to effectively embed sustainability
across the performative and operative aspects of the organisation. Responsibility for implementing
sustainability in the workplace is with the general manager and the building facilities manager,
though the theatre green team has representatives from each department. Sustainability
training is provided for maintenance staff and in addiiton visiting artists receive a welcome
plan with information on sustainability.

Universal Music offices and Abbey Road Studios have committed to clean energy by moving to a
100% renewable energy supplier and installing new LED lights as part of a capital refurbishment
project. The Universal Music Green Team regularly engages staff with sustainability initiatives and
organized a dedicated environment day with talks and activities in the main reception of the office.
Through monitoring of business travel Universal has been able to measure significant reductions
in these area, while monitoring of waste, recycling and energy is helping inform opportunities for
further improvements.

As one of London’s iconic museums and cultural spaces, the V&A recognises the importance of
incorporating sustainability principles into the activities of the museums main site in South Kensington
as well as the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. Sustainability is part of the FuturePlan for
capital works across the estate. The Conservation and Collection Management carryout research
on environmental conditions, and LED spectrum analysis, which is shared with colleagues across
the sector to inform best practice. The Sustainability Team has representatives from all key
departments and meets regularly to discuss process and priorities for environmental action.
Sustainability is integrated into the procurement process. The V&A works with Bio-Bean, an
innovative company collecting coffee waste to turn into fuel.

Sustainability has become integral to every aspect of producing and operating the Theatre.
The Young Vic’s series of productions, ‘Classics for a new climate’, highlighted sustainability as a central
part of the production process itself, without compromising the artistic integrity of the piece. Julie’s
Bicycle acted as consultants during the production of both La Musica and After Miss Julie, providing
their Industry Green (IG) tool to analyze the carbon footprint of each production. ‘La Musica’, ran with
half the carbon budget of other productions of similar size. The legacy of this series has been to
create the blueprint for future productions. As a member of the London Theatre Consortium the
Young Vic has ensured the knowledge and experience gained from this series has been shared
with other producing theatre colleagues.
