ACP was conceived in New York. Dr. Heinrich Stern of New York City is credited with conceiving the idea and bringing about the founding of the American College of Physicians.

He had attended a meeting of the Royal College of Physicians in London in 1913 and envisioned a similar institution in North America.

The first official meeting of the ACP took place at the Hotel Astor in Times Square in NYC on June 25, 1915.

In addition to Dr. Stern, 13 doctors were named Fellows at that first meeting, in recognition of their special meritorious services to the science and practice of medicine.

The Chapter stands on 3 pillars: Advocacy, Education, and Quality. Advocacy: We advocate for responsible public policy positions relating to

health care for the benefit of the public, patients, our members and the medical profession. Our focus includes regulatory agencies, NYS Legislature, Executive Office, insurance companies and other stakeholders.

Education: We conduct more than 50 local, regional and statewide educational programs each year that foster excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine.

Quality: We serve members by providing education and resources to promote quality improvement activities that enhance the delivery of patient care and the effectiveness and efficiency of practice.

Leading the American response to pellegra was Dr. James Woods Babcock (1856-1922), a physician and superintendent of the SC State Hospital for the Insane from 1891-1914. The story is told in Dr. Bryan’s book, Asylum Doctor: James Woods Babcock and the Red Plague of Pellegra.
