The Auburn Ski Club LegacyAuburn Ski Club was founded in 1928 by a group of unique individuals with a genuine passion for skiing and ski jumping. The club’s original “Ski Grounds” (photo on right) at Cisco Grove boasted the first engineered ski jump in the west and provided many Californians with their very first experi-ence on skis.Auburn Ski Club holds a special place in both California and U.S. skiing history, not just for the champions who came out of the club like two time US National Ski Jumping & Olympic team member Roy Mikkelsen (below), and 1992 Olym-pic Speed Skiing Bronze Medalist Jeff Hamilton, but for other milestones which helped establish this region as one of the premier ski destinations in the country. Auburn Ski Club hosted national championship events, helped create the original California/Nevada Ski Association and led efforts to open up Highway 40 to year-round travel so people could reach the Sierra

during the winter months. In 1989, to carry on the founders’ vision and leg-acy, Auburn Ski Club Training Center (ASCTC) on Donner Summit was built. This became a new home to continue the mission of fostering the lifelong enjoyment of winter sports for families and athletes from the greater Foothill region, across Northern California and beyond. Today, ASCTC is one of the few combined Al-pine, Nordic, Biathlon and Snowboard training centers in the country, creating a successful

blend of family recreational skiing, national caliber athletes and interna-tional level competition. While many still fondly refer to us as Auburn Ski Club, and we do have members, we are not private! Anyone may purchase a XC pass and ski on our trails, join one of our programs or register for a race held here. If you do opt for mem-bership through a season trail pass purchase or program, you do get even more benefits and we greatly appreciate your support of our long and storied legacy! We Thrive on Teamwork & VolunteerismThe best way to understand who we are and what we do here at ASCTC is to come on up and jump in! Because we’re a non-profit Training Center and not a “for profit” resort, our model is different than what you might be used to. We have a small staff each with our specialties, but we also do a little bit of everything to make it all work!

And then there’s you!

Our programs, and all of our events, rely on volunteer energy. When you register your child, you’ll be presented with a range of volunteer opportunities. If you’re a great skier, you can help on the snow. If you’re good in the kitchen, serving hot cocoa at break time might fit your style!

If your child takes part in races of any type, we’ll need your help on race day! These are major events with hundreds of participants involving registration, course set-up, intricate timing systems, food preparation and more. Our volunteer race crew, dubbed the “Best in the West” has been legendary for 90 years!

We sincerely hope you’ll join us this winter and become part of the ex-tended ASCTC family. There’s really no place like this in Tahoe!

We also want to use this space to express our gratitude to everyone who is already a part of ASCTC, and who has given so generously of their time during the past year. We are very appreciative and value you tremendously!

Thank You!!!

Bill Clark was born and raised in Auburn and grew up Alpine skiing as a junior with ASC Ski Team. Af-ter a ski racing career at Sierra College and obtaining a B.A. from Sacramento State, he became Alpine Pro-gram Director at Auburn Ski Club in the late 1970’s. He quickly took on greater responsibilities and by the mid-80’s was planning and overseeing the building and completion of the Training Center facility we know today.

Bill became the first Executive Director at Auburn Ski Club in the mid-90’s and began working tirelessly on the expansion of the club’s original XC trail system. In addition to managing ASCTC, Bill also directs the club’s Western Skisport Museum and is on the Board of Directors of the Squaw Valley Ski Museum Foundation, working to forge the development of the “1960 Olympics Museum.” This museum will be a world class cul-tural asset celebrating Olympic legacy and our Sierra ski heritage, located in Squaw Valley Park.

In 2013, Bill was honored with the Hans Georg award from the Far West Ski Association, an award given annually for distinguished accomplishment and long-term contribution to skiing.

Bill and his wife Laura, who also works at ASCTC, have three grown daughters who grew up as passionate skiers immersed in club activities.

When asked what he values most about his role here, Bill says that it comes down to being part part of an organization that provides such a wide range of opportunities for families and youth of all abilities. “We get to see very young kids discover the joys of skiing and riding and grow into accomplished athletes. They carry with them a lifelong passion for winter sports and the mountain environment, which they will inevitably pass on to the next generation.”
